Canada is the world\u27s second largest country covering approximately 10 million km2 (McCartney & Horton, 1997). About 90% of Canada is uninhabited with 90 percent of Canadians living within 500 km of the American border. The forage resources used by livestock grazing and the production of forage crops covers over 36 million ha of Canada\u27s land base (3.6%) and is divided into 72% native range (26 million ha), 11% cultivated pastures (4 million ha) and 17% forage crops (6 million ha) There are 25 million ha in grain and oilseed crops (McCartney & Horton, 1997)

As budgets for technology transfer of scientific information and extension education continue to fall, new ways to disseminate agricultural knowledge are needed. Research findings, published in many scientific journals and reports, are seldom readily available to extension agents and farmers. Over time some of this material is lost. This program aimed to locate the best information on various forage and beef topics relative to Canada and the Northern USA and to summarise them in condensed form and in scientific review papers for a web-based site

Winter Grazing and Feeding Systems in Western Canada

Beef cow calf producers in Western Canada are looking for methods of extending the grazing season into the winter in order to lower winter feed costs. Dry beef cows were early or late weaned and grazed during the early months of winter on late seeded barley swaths (Hardlum vulgare L.) and compared to cows fed barley silage and free choice barley straw in a feeding yard. The swath grazed barley was late seeded in June and swathed in the silage stage in mid September. Cows successfully swath grazed for three winters from mid November until mid to late February with no major differences in animal performance The swath grazing system has less labour, less stored feeding and handling costs and less manure hauling costs than cows wintered on stored feeds in a feeding yard
