    Nanoscale periodicity in stripe-forming systems at high temperature: Au/W(110)

    We observe using low-energy electron microscopy the self-assembly of monolayer-thick stripes of Au on W(110) near the transition temperature between stripes and the non-patterned (homogeneous) phase. We demonstrate that the amplitude of this Au stripe phase decreases with increasing temperature and vanishes at the order-disorder transition (ODT). The wavelength varies much more slowly with temperature and coverage than theories of stress-domain patterns with sharp phase boundaries would predict, and maintains a finite value of about 100 nm at the ODT. We argue that such nanometer-scale stripes should often appear near the ODT.Comment: 5 page

    Swine Diets Utilizing Wheat

    Previous trials have suggested that, when diets were supplemented at the same level and either corn or wheat was used in the same amount as the grain, pig gains were similar. However, pigs fed corn diets were more efficient in terms of both feed use and cost per pound of grain. Wheat diets supplemented at lower levels or assess the value of wheat\u27s higher protein level relative to corn and fed with or without supplemental lysine did not support satisfactory pig performance in terms of gain, feed efficiency or feed cost. Results of these trials suggested that an intermediate level of protein supplementation for wheat should be investigated. The trial reported here was designed with that objective

    How to assure that each sow gets her fair share of feed and how to control the boss sows are management problems facing the producer who is limit feeding groups of sows in order to get maximum litter size and minimum gestation feed costs. Feeding stalls have proven very effective in achieving both of these objectives. There are several types of commercial stalls on the market as well as several good designs for homemade feeding stalls. The type used South Dakota State University has drawn considerable interest by producers and many have asked for material lists and costs. These stalls are probably no better than many others but have been effective in minimizing limit feeding problems

    The horizontal stabilizer of the 737 transport was redesigned. Five shipsets were fabricated using composite materials. Weight reduction greater than the 20% goal was achieved. Parts and assemblies were readily produced on production-type tooling. Quality assurance methods were demonstrated. Repair methods were developed and demonstrated. Strength and stiffness analytical methods were substantiated by comparison with test results. Cost data was accumulated in a semiproduction environment. FAA certification was obtained

    Single event effects and laser simulation studies

    The single event upset (SEU) linear energy transfer threshold (LETTH) of radiation hardened 64K Static Random Access Memories (SRAM's) was measured with a picosecond pulsed dye laser system. These results were compared with standard heavy ion accelerator (Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)) measurements of the same SRAM's. With heavy ions, the LETTH of the Honeywell HC6364 was 27 MeV-sq cm/mg at 125 C compared with a value of 24 MeV-sq cm/mg obtained with the laser. In the case of the second type of 64K SRAM, the IBM640lCRH no upsets were observed at 125 C with the highest LET ions used at BNL. In contrast, the pulsed dye laser tests indicated a value of 90 MeV-sq cm/mg at room temperature for the SEU-hardened IBM SRAM. No latchups or multiple SEU's were observed on any of the SRAM's even under worst case conditions. The results of this study suggest that the laser can be used as an inexpensive laboratory SEU prescreen tool in certain cases
