Marine adaptations in the Late Mesolithic of the Portuguese southwest coast: use-wear analysis of the lithic industry of Vale Marim I
The results of the lithic assemblage study are discussed in the wider context of the Late Mesolithic of the southwest Portuguese coast in order to shed new light on the subsistence marine adaptations and on the complex hunter gatherer social organization, immediately preceding the food production economy, and the domestic mode of production
Textiles, basketry and cordage from the Early Neolithic settlement of La Marmotta, Lazio
Archaeological investigation of Circum-Alpine lake, or pile, dwellings has afforded unprecedented insight into Neolithic and Bronze Age societies. The discovery in 1989 of a submerged settlement near Rome added an early (eighth millennium BP) geographical outlier to this distribution. Two decades of excavation at La Marmotta have identified more than a dozen dwellings and an enormous assemblage of organic remains. Here, the authors present an overview of the textiles, basketry and cordage recovered, and the tools used to manufacture them. The assemblage paints a more complete picture of the technological expertise of Neolithic societies and their ability to exploit and process plant materials to produce a wide range of crafts

Hunter-Gatherers’ Tool-Kit: A Functional Perspective
This volume provides the reader with a multifaceted overview of the study of stone tools used by humans in the past. Including case studies from various geographic regions and different continents, and covering a wide range of chronologies, the contributions here are centred on the study of human communities based on a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. A number of essays in this volume focus on tool production and use, and address major paleoanthropological questions related to past human economic and social behaviour. The book also includes detailed and careful studies of human technology during Prehistory
MICROLITHS USE IN WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN DURING VI-V MILLENNIUM BC
Geometric microliths have been often considered as an important cultural and chronological marker for the study of lithic assemblages, especially for European Mesolithic and Neolithic. However, systematic studies on microlith function are still lacking. In this paper we present a synthesis of microwear analysis realized on a number of sites, in Western Mediterranean, dated between the VI-V millennium. Our objective is to investigate the significance and the recurrence of those instruments within a spectrum of different contexts. Results indicate that, within a global tendency for microliths use as hunting weapons, there is a certain degree of variability on the basis of environmental, economical and cultural factors that strongly influence their production and mode of use
