    Management of Iron-Deficiency Anemia on Inpatients and Appropriate Discharge and Follow-Up.

    Background:The aims of the study were to identify appropriate supplementation of iron for inpatients and to identify factors involved in appropriate discharge documentation and follow-up. Methods:This was a retrospective analysis of 103 patients at a community hospital in New York City. Results:A total of 57 (57/103, 55.3%) patients were admitted due to symptomatic anemia. Twenty (20/103, 19.4%) of those with iron-deficiency anemia had either esophagogastroduodenoscopy or colonoscopy. Gastroenterologist or hematologist was consulted for 45/103 (43.7%). Inpatient iron supplementation was given for 62/103 (60.2%) of patients; and 43/103 (41.7%) had blood transfusion. Upon discharge, 50/103 (48.5%) had appropriate documentation of iron-deficiency anemia on discharge paperwork. Appropriate follow-up was done for 54/103 (52.4%). Iron supplementation was provided for 53/103 (51.5%) of patients. Having inpatient esophagogastroduodenoscopy or colonoscopy, blood transfusion, or symptomatic anemia had a statistical significance for likelihood of appropriate discharge documentation. Conclusions:Iron-deficiency anemia can have high rates of mortality and morbidity in the population. Appropriate discharge of patients with iron-deficiency anemia and factors related to this are paramount for clinicians in order to have the best patient outcomes

    The present invention is a self-contained, high-energy liquid rock-boring system that will bore a small-diameter access hole [5] several hundred meters through hard granite and other obstacles within minutes of deployment. It employs a land unit [100] platform subsystem [1000] with an energetic fluid fuel reservoir [1300] and a boring subsystem [3000] having a plurality of pulsejets [3100]. Each pulsejet [3100] repeatedly ignites the energetic fluid [7] causing a plurality of rapidly-expanding gas bubbles [3250] which create and force a plurality liquid slugs [10] ahead of them rapidly out through a nozzle [3260] causing the slugs [10] to impact against materials ahead of the nozzles [3260], boring an access hole [5].     We address the problem of reasoning about interleavings in safety verification of concurrent programs. In the literature, there are two prominent techniques for pruning the search space. First, there are well-investigated trace-based methods, collectively known as "Partial Order Reduction (POR)", which operate by weakening the concept of a trace by abstracting the total order of its transitions into a partial order. Second, there is state-based interpolation where a collection of formulas can be generalized by taking into account the property to be verified. Our main contribution is a framework that synergistically combines POR with state interpolation so that the sum is more than its parts

    The present study aimed at researching the synergistic effect between an ectopic bone substitute and surrounding muscle tissue. To describe this effect, changes of insulin like growth factors (IGF1, IGF2), myostatin (GDF8) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA content of 12 Wistar-King rats musculus latissimus dorsi with implanted poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) scaffold were examined after 6 and 12 weeks. At each time interval six rats were killed and implants and surrounding tissues prepared for genetic evaluation. Eight rats without any implants served as controls. RNAwas extracted from homogenized muscle tissue and reverse transcribed. Changes in mRNA content were measured by Real-Time PCR using specific primers for IGF1, IGF2, GDF8 and VEGF. Comparing the level of VEGF mRNA in muscle after 6 and 12 weeks to the controls, we could assess a significant increase of VEGF gene expression (

    The focus of this research is in the definition of programmable expert Personal Health Systems (PHS) to monitor patients affected by chronic diseases using agent oriented programming and mobile computing to represent the interactions happening amongst the components of the system. The paper also discusses issues of knowledge representation within the medical domain when dealing with temporal patterns concerning the physiological values of the patient. In the presented agent based PHS the doctors can personalize for each patient monitoring rules that can be defined in a graphical way. Furthermore, to achieve better scalability, the computations for monitoring the patients are distributed among their devices rather than being performed in a centralized server. The system is evaluated using data of 21 diabetic patients to detect temporal patterns according to a set of monitoring rules defined. The system’s scalability is evaluated by comparing it with a centralized approach. The evaluation concerning the detection of temporal patterns highlights the system’s ability to monitor chronic patients affected by diabetes. Regarding the scalability, the results show the fact that an approach exploiting the use of mobile computing is more scalable than a centralized approach. Therefore, more likely to satisfy the needs of next generation PHSs. PHSs are becoming an adopted technology to deal with the surge of patients affected by chronic illnesses. This paper discusses architectural choices to make an agent based PHS more scalable by using a distributed mobile computing approach. It also discusses how to model the medical knowledge in the PHS in such a way that it is modifiable at run time. The evaluation highlights the necessity of distributing the reasoning to the mobile part of the system and that modifiable rules are able to deal with the change in lifestyle of the patients affected by chronic illnesses.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    A symbolic algorithm for the synthesis of bounded Petri nets

    This paper presents an algorithm for the synthesis of bounded Petri nets from transition systems. A bounded Petri net is always provided in case it exists. Otherwise, the events are split into several transitions to guarantee the synthesis of a Petri net with bisimilar behavior. The algorithm uses symbolic representations of multisets of states to efficiently generate all the minimal regions. The algorithm has been implemented in a tool.
