A neural-network controlled dynamic evolutionary scheme for global molecular geometry optimization

A novel, neural network controlled, dynamic evolutionary algorithm is proposed for the purposes of molecular geometry optimization. The approach is tested for selected model molecules and some molecular systems of importance in biochemistry. Variable stars in the field of the old open cluster NGC 2243

We report results of photometric monitoring of the NGC 2243 field in V and $I$ filters. Two W~UMa-type systems and three detached eclipsing binaries were discovered. Both contact systems are likely members of the cluster. One of detached binaries - variable V1 - has a period P=1.188 day. This variable is located at the cluster's turnoff in the color-magnitude diagram. Determination of parameters for components of V1 can provide direct information about properties of turnoff stars in NGC 2243 as well as to allow direct determination of cluster's distance. A background RR Lyr variable was found in the monitored field. The reddening of NGC 2243 is estimated at E(V-I)=0.10\pm 0.04 based on the V-I color exhibited by this star at minimum light. The observed distribution of colors for the background halo stars shows a cutoff at (V-I)\approx 0.60 what implies $E(V-I)\leq 0.12$ for the cluster.Comment: 18 pages, uuencoded postscript, includes 9 figures. Z wprowadzenia: "Inspiracją do powstania niniejszej monografii i stał się jubileusz ćwierćwiecza działalności Straży Miejskiej Miasta Krakowa, umundurowanej jednostki organizacyjnej, podporządkowanej Prezydentowi Miasta, powołanej w celu ochrony życia, zdrowia i mienia obywateli przed bezprawnymi zamachami oraz ochrony porządku i spokoju w miejscach publicznych. Organizację Straży Miejskiej umożliwiła Ustawa z 6 kwietnia 1990 roku o Policji, na podstawie której Prezydent Miasta Krakowa Krzysztof Bachmiński 25 marca 1991 r. Zarządzeniem Nr 9/91 o utworzeniu Straży Miejskiej powołał ją do życia. Straż Miejska w Krakowie zastąpiła istniejące wcześniej – utworzoną 16 sierpnia 1975 roku Miejską Służbę Porządkową i utworzoną 22 czerwca 1989 roku Dzielnicową Straż Porządkową Kraków- -Śródmieście. Dynamics of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with various polymeric coatings

In this article, the results of a study of the magnetic dynamics of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with chitosan and polyethylene glycol (PEG) coatings are reported. The materials were prepared by the co-precipitation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering and scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was shown that the cores contain maghemite, and their hydrodynamic diameters vary from 49 nm for PEG-coated to 200 nm for chitosan-coated particles. The magnetic dynamics of the nanoparticles in terms of the function of temperature was studied with magnetic susceptometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Their superparamagnetic fluctuations frequencies, determined from the fits of Mössbauer spectra, range from tens to hundreds of megahertz at room temperature and mostly decrease in the applied magnetic field. For water suspensions of nanoparticles, maxima are observed in the absorption part of magnetic susceptibility and they shift to higher temperatures with increasing excitation frequency. A step-like decrease of the susceptibility occurs at freezing, and from that, the Brown’s and Néel’s contributions are extracted and compared for nanoparticles differing in core sizes and types of coating. The results are analyzed and discussed with respect to the tailoring of the dynamic properties of these nanoparticle materials for requirements related to the characteristic frequency ranges of MRI and electromagnetic field hyperthermia

Lipoid pneumonia — a case of refractory pneumonia in a child treated with ketogenic diet

Tłuszczowe zapalenie płuc jest przewlekłym śródmiąższowym stanem zapalnym zrębu płuca, wynikającym z akumulacji w nim endogennych i egzogennych tłuszczów. Egzogenne tłuszczowe zapalenie płuc wiąże się z aspiracją bądź inhalacją olejów obecnych w pokarmach, lekach, radiologicznych środkach kontrastowych. Manifestacja kliniczna jest różnorodna: od postaci bezobjawowych do ciężkich zapaleń płuc, przebiegających z niewydolnością oddechową; zależy od ilości aspirowanego tłuszczu oraz czasu trwania aspiracji. Rozpoznanie ustala się na podstawie wywiadu lekarskiego oraz obecności w badaniu histopatologicznym sedimenpopłuczyn oskrzelowo-pęcherzykowych makrofagów wypełnionych wodniczkami z tłuszczem. Tomografia komputerowa klatki piersiowej wysokiej rozdzielczości jest obrazową metodą z wyboru w diagnostyce tłuszczowego zapalenia płuc. Postępowanie terapeutyczne polega przede wszystkim na zaprzestaniu ekspozycji na substancje tłuszczowe, ich eliminacji z dróg oddechowych, poprzez powtarzalne zabiegi płukania oskrzelowo-pęcherzykowego metodą bronchoskopową. Leczenie glikokortykosteroidami jest kontrowersyjne i stosowane w ciężkich postaciach. Autorzy opisują przypadek 3-letniej dziewczynki leczonej dietą ketogenną z powodu lekoopornej padaczki. Przedstawione problemy diagnostyczne wynikały z niespecyficznych objawów, sugerujących infekcyjne przyczyny zapalenia płuc. O tłuszczowym zapaleniu płuc należy pamiętać zwłaszcza w przypadkach zapalenia płuc i gorączki opornych na konwencjonalne leczenie, kluczowe znaczenie dla rozpoznania odgrywa szczegółowo zebrany wywiad lekarski. Obecność refluksu żołądkowo-przełykowego oraz innych czynników ryzyka aspiracji należy rozważyć jako względne przeciwwskazania do stosowania diety ketogennej. W opisanym przypadku leczenie za pomocą glikokortykosteroidów okazało się skuteczne.Lipoid pneumonia (LP) is a chronic inflammation of the lung parenchyma with interstitial involvement due to the accumulation of endogenous or exogenous lipids. Exogenous LP (ELP) is associated with the aspiration or inhalation of oil present in food, oil-based medications or radiographic contrast media. The clinical manifestations of LP range from asymptomatic cases to severe pulmonary involvement, with respiratory failure and death, according to the quantity and duration of the aspiration. The diagnosis of exogenous lipoid pneumonia is based on a history of exposure to oil and the presence of lipid-laden macrophages on sputum or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) analysis. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is the imaging technique of choice for evaluation of patients with suspected LP. The best therapeutic strategy is to remove the oil as early as possible through bronchoscopy with multiple BALs and interruption in the use of mineral oil. Steroid therapy remains controversial, and should be reserved for severe cases. We describe a case of LP due to oil aspiration in 3-year-old girl with intractable epilepsy on ketogenic diet. Diagnostic problems were due to non-specific symptoms that were mimicing serious infectious pneumonia. A high index of suspicion and precise medical history is required in cases of refractory pneumonia and fever unresponsive to conventional therapy. Gastroesophageal reflux and a risk of aspiration may be regarded as relative contraindications to the ketogenic diet. Conservative treatment, based on the use of oral steroids, proved to be an efficient therapeutic approach in this case
