Use of shallow samples to estimate the total carbon storage in pastoral soils

Using data from pastoral soils sampled by horizon at 56 locations across New Zealand, we conducted a meta-analysis. On average, the total depth sampled was 0.93 ± 0.026 m (± SEM), and on a volumetric basis, the total C storage averaged 26.9 ± 1.8, 13.9 ± 0.6 and 9.2 ± 1.4 kg C m⁻² for allophanic (n=12), non-allophanic (n=40) and pumice soils (n=4), respectively. We estimated the total C storage, and quantified the uncertainty, using the data for samples taken from the uppermost A-horizon whose depth averaged 0.1 ± 0.003 m. For A-horizon samples of the allophanic soils, the mean C content was 108 ± 6 g C kg⁻¹ and the bulk density was 772 ± 29 kg m⁻³, for non-allophanic soils they were 51 ± 4 g C kg⁻¹ and 1055 ± 29 kg m⁻³, and for pumice soils they were 68 ± 9 g C kg⁻¹ and 715 ± 45 kg m⁻³. The C density —a product of the C content and bulk density —of the A-horizon samples was proportional to their air-dried water content, a proxy measure for the mineral surface area. Glacier changes in the Bavarian Alps from 1989/90 to 2006/07

The five glaciers in Bavaria which today cover a total area of less than one square kilometer were frequently monitored by geodetic methods from the mid of the 20th century. In this paper, the record is extended by new surveys in 1999 and 2006. The glaciers show a prolonged surface lowering, which is intensified compared to the 1980s and reaches maximum rates from 1999-2006. Moreover, the ice thickness of four glaciers was determined in 2006 and 2007 by geophysical field techniques and allows the calculation of ice volumes. First simple extrapolations of observed volume losses indicate that the two Berchtesgaden glaciers and Südlicher Schneeferner could disappear by 2016, while the ice of Nördlicher Schneeferner endures until 2027. Ice thicknesses and surface changes are visualized in five annexed maps.Die fünf bayerischen Gletscher, die heute insgesamt eine Fläche von weniger als einem Quadratkilometer bedecken, wurden seit der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts regelmäßig geodätisch aufgenommen. Diese Reihe wird hier um zwei Neuvermessungen in den Jahren 1999 und 2006 erweitert. Alle Gletscher zeigen in dem Zeitraum eine fortgesetzte Erniedrigung ihrer Oberfläche, die im Vergleich zu den 1980er Jahren verstärkt ist und in der Periode 1999-2006 Maximalwerte aufzeigt. Außerdem wurden in den Jahren 2006 und 2007 die Eisdicken von vier Gletschern durch geophysikalische Messungen bestimmt, was erstmalig die Ermittlung des verbleibenden Eisvolumens erlaubt. Erste einfache Extrapolationen der beobachteten Volumenverluste in die Zukunft deuten an, dass die beiden Gletscher in den Berchtesgadener Alpen sowie der Südliche Schneeferner bis zum Jahr 2016 verschwinden könnten, während der Nördliche Schneeferner noch bis 2027 überdauern würde. StreamLearner: Distributed Incremental Machine Learning on Event Streams: Grand Challenge

Today, massive amounts of streaming data from smart devices need to be analyzed automatically to realize the Internet of Things. The Complex Event Processing (CEP) paradigm promises low-latency pattern detection on event streams. However, CEP systems need to be extended with Machine Learning (ML) capabilities such as online training and inference in order to be able to detect fuzzy patterns (e.g., outliers) and to improve pattern recognition accuracy during runtime using incremental model training. In this paper, we propose a distributed CEP system denoted as StreamLearner for ML-enabled complex event detection. The proposed programming model and data-parallel system architecture enable a wide range of real-world applications and allow for dynamically scaling up and out system resources for low-latency, high-throughput event processing. We show that the DEBS Grand Challenge 2017 case study (i.e., anomaly detection in smart factories) integrates seamlessly into the StreamLearner API. Dampak Psikologis dan Kualitas Hidup pada Perempuan dengan Sindrom Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH)

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) adalah kondisi kelainan bawaan pada perempuan dimana vagina, saluran tuba, dan uterus tidak berkembang secara normal. Kondisi ini seringkali mulai diketahui ketika seorang remaja tidak mengalami menstruasi (amenorrhea primer) atau ketika perempuan usia subur tidak kunjung mendapatkan keturuan dan atau mengalami gangguan dalam melakukan hubungan seksual setelah menikah. Etiologi MRKH hingga saat ini masih kurang jelas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji hasil-hasil penelitian (literature review) mengenai dampak psikologis dan kualitas hidup (quality of life) pada perempuan dengan MRKH. Penelusuran literature dilakukan pada database PUBMED dan Sciencedirect dengan menggunakan kata kunci “MRKH AND quality of life” dengan menggunakan pengaturan untuk mendapatkan artikel jurnal lengkap (fulltext) dalam Bahasa Inggris. Hasil penelusuran menunjukkan adanya problem psikologis pada perempuan dengan MRKH, baik yang menjalani operasi maupun yang tidak. Pendampingan psikologis sangat dibutuhkan dan perlu diintegrasikan dalam penanganan medis terhadap perempuan dengan MRKH. Kualitas hidup perempuan dengan MRKH yang dilaporkan di jurnal bersifat inkonklusif
