Development of CNS-type Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor in Metastatic Testicular Mixed Germ Cell Tumor.

    Get PDF
A 29-year-old man presenting with a retroperitoneal mass was found to have a testis lesion consistent with mixed germ cell tumor and the RPLND specimen showed teratoma with an area of central nervous system-type primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) not present in the testis. Whether such primitive tumor components represent a de novo tumor component or represent progression from existing neuroepithelial teratomatous elements is unclear. Given the high likelihood of residual tumor and possibility of malignant transformation, post-chemotherapy RPLND remains vital in treating patients with testis cancer. PNET is chemo-resistant and lesions should be resected, without clear evidence for adjuvant chemotherapy

Effect of pig weaning age and commingling after the nursery phase on humoral and behavioral indicators of well-being and on growth performance

Two hundred and sixteen pigs were weaned at 14 or 21 d of age to determine the effect of weaning age and commingling after the nursery phase on growth and behavior of pigs in a wean-tofinish facility. Pigs were divided into older and younger age groups and allotted 12 pigs/pen with nine replications of each group. At the end of the nursery phase (d 34 after weaning), one-half of the pigs in each group were removed and commingled for the grower/finisher phase and the other half remained in their original pens. Beginning at weaning (d 0), pigs were monitored via camera surveillance following weaning, commingling, and on d 65 after weaning. While in the nursery phase, older pigs had greater gain and feed intake than younger pigs, however, younger pigs were more efficient throughout the nursery phase than older pigs. Toward the end of the grower/finisher period, younger pigs had greater gain, feed intake, and gain:feed than older pigs and reached a common weight 4 d sooner. Younger pigs spent more time standing or moving during the nursery phase than older pigs. Immediately following commingling, the younger, unmixed pigs spent more time feeding. However on d 65 after weaning, the older, commingled pigs and younger, unmixed pigs spent more time feeding than older, unmixed pigs and younger, commingled pigs. In conclusion, younger pigs grew slower than older pigs during the nursery phase; however, younger pigs gained more during the finishing period. Additionally, weaning age and commingling influenced feeding behavior during the grower/finisher period

Polarized Proton Pionic Capture in Deuterium as a Probe of 3N Dynamics

    Get PDF
The proton analyzing power Ay in pion production reaction pd --> pi0 3He has been calculated including one- and two-body meson production mechanisms with a proper treatment of the three-nucleon dynamics and an accurate solution of the 3N bound-state problem for phenomenological two-nucleon potentials. In the region around the Delta resonance, the structure of the analyzing power can be understood once interference effects among amplitudes describing intermediate Delta N formation in different orbital states are considered along with the additional interference with the S-wave pion production amplitudes. Then, the inclusion of three-nucleon dynamics in the initial state produces the structure of the analyzing power that has been observed experimentally.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

Using multiple reference ontologies: Managing composite annotations

    Get PDF
There are a growing number of reference ontologies available across a variety of biomedical domains and current research focuses on their construction, organization and use. An important use case for these ontologies is annotation—where users create metadata that access concepts and terms in reference ontologies. We draw on our experience in physiological modeling to present a compelling use case that demonstrates the potential complexity of such annotations. In the domain of physiological biosimulation, we argue that most annotations require the use of multiple reference ontologies. We suggest that these “composite” annotations should be retained as a repository of knowledge about post-coordination that promotes sharing and interoperation across biosimulation models

Neutrino Bremsstrahlung Process in highly degenerate magnetized electron gas

In this article the neutrino bremsstrahlung process is considered in presence of strong magnetic field, though the calculations for this process in absence of magnetic field are also carried out simultaneously. The electrons involved in this process are supposed to be highly degenerate and relativistic. The scattering cross sections and energy loss rates for both cases, in presence and absence of magnetic field, are calculated in the extreme-relativistic limit. Two results are compared in the range of temperature 5.9×1095.9\times 10^{9} K <T1011< T\leq 10^{11} K and magnetic field 1014101610^{14} - 10^{16} G at a fixed density 1015\sim 10^{15} gm/ccgm/cc, a typical environment during the cooling of magnetized neutron star. The interpretation of our result is briefly discussed and the importance of this process during the stellar evolution is speculated.Comment: 12 pages including 2 figures and 1 tabl

Tunneling mechanism of light transmission through metallic films

    Get PDF
A mechanism of light transmission through metallic films is proposed, assisted by tunnelling between resonating buried dielectric inclusions. This is illustrated by arrays of Si spheres embedded in Ag. Strong transmission peaks are observed near the Mie resonances of the spheres. The interaction among various planes of spheres and interference effects between these resonances and the surface plasmons of Ag lead to mixing and splitting of the resonances. Transmission is proved to be limited only by absorption. For small spheres, the effective dielectric constant can be tuned to values close to unity and a method is proposed to turn the resulting materials invisible.Comment: 4 papges, 5 figure
