    Rapid communication: Genetic linkage and physical mapping of the porcine cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene

    Source and Description of Primers. The conserved sequences of human and rabbit cholesteryl ester transfer protein gene (CETP) (GenBank accession numbers NM000078 and M27486, respectively) were used to design primers to PCR amplify porcine CETP. The primers amplified a 970-bp fragment of porcine CETP gene spanning an intron between exon 1 and exon 2. The porcine CETP sequence (GenBank accession number AF333037) determined from this fragment showed 80.9%(34/42) and 78.6% (33/42) nucleotide identity to the corresponding human and rabbit CETP exon 2 sequence, respectively. To physically map porcine CETP by PCR testing pig/ rodent somatic cell hybrid panel (SCHP) and to develop PCR-RFLP marker for linkage mapping in PigMaP reference families, a pig-specific reverse primer was designed based on the new generated porcine intron 1 sequence

    The C IV Mass Density of the Universe at Redshift 5

    In order to search for metals in the Lyman alpha forest at redshifts z > 4, we have obtained spectra of high S/N and resolution of three QSOs at z > 5.4 discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These data allow us to probe to metal enrichment of the intergalactic medium at early times with higher sensitivity than previous studies. We find 16 C IV absorption systems with column densities log N(C IV) = 12.50 - 13.98 over a total redshift path Delta X = 3.29. In the redshift interval z = 4.5-5.0, where our statistics are most reliable, we deduce a comoving mass density of C IV ions Omega(C IV) = (4.3 +/- 2.5) x 10(-8) (90% confidence limits) for absorption systems with log N(C IV) > 13.0 (for an Einstein-de Sitter cosmology with h = 0.65). This value of Omega(C IV) is entirely consistent with those measured at z < 4; we confirm the earlier finding by Songaila (2001) that neither the column density distribution of C IV absorbers nor its integral show significant redshift evolution over a period of time which stretches from 1.25 to 4.5 Gyr after the big bang. This somewhat surprising conclusion may be an indication that the intergalactic medium was enriched in metals at redshifts much greater than 5, perhaps by the sources responsible for its reionization. Alternatively, the C IV systems we see may be associated with outflows from massive star-forming galaxies at later times, while the truly intergalactic metals may reside in regions of the Lyman alpha forest of lower density than those probed up to now.Comment: 24 pages including 5 figures.     Antiferromagnetism in metals: from the cuprate superconductors to the heavy fermion materials

    The critical theory of the onset of antiferromagnetism in metals, with concomitant Fermi surface reconstruction, has recently been shown to be strongly coupled in two spatial dimensions. The onset of unconventional superconductivity near this critical point is reviewed: it involves a subtle interplay between the breakdown of fermionic quasiparticle excitations on the Fermi surface, and the strong pairing glue provided by the antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The net result is a logarithm-squared enhancement of the pairing vertex for generic Fermi surfaces, with a universal dimensionless co-efficient independent of the strength of interactions, which is expected to lead to superconductivity at the scale of the Fermi energy. We also discuss the possibility that the antiferromagnetic critical point can be replaced by an intermediate `fractionalized Fermi liquid' phase, in which there is Fermi surface reconstruction but no long-range antiferromagnetic order.     Two strategies for prevention of cytomegalovirus infections after liver transplantation

    Aim: To analyze differences in patients’ clinical course, we compared two regimes of either preemptive therapy or prophylaxis after liver transplantation. Methods: This retrospective study was reviewed and approved by the institutional review board of the University of Leipzig. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) prophylaxis with valganciclovir hydrochloride for liver transplant recipients was replaced by a preemptive strategy in October 2009. We retrospectively compared liver transplant recipients 2 years before and after October 2009. During the first period, all patients received valganciclovir daily. During the second period all patients included in the analysis were treated following a preemptive strategy. Outcomes included one year survival and therapeutic intervention due to CMV viremia or infection. Results: Between 2007 and 2010 n = 226 patients underwent liver transplantation in our center. n = 55 patients were D+/R- high risk recipients and were excluded from further analysis. A further 43 patients had to be excluded since CMV prophylaxis/preemptive strategy was not followed although there was no clinical reason for the deviation. Of the remaining 128 patients whose data were analyzed, 60 received prophylaxis and 68 were treated following a preemptive strategy. The difference in overall mortality was not significant, nor was it significant for one-year mortality where it was 10% (95%CI: 8%-28%, P = 0.31) higher for the preemptive group. No significant differences in blood count abnormalities or the incidence of sepsis and infections were observed other than CMV. In total, 19 patients (14.7%) received ganciclovir due to CMV viremia and/or infections. Patients who were treated according to the preemptive algorithm had a significantly higher rate risk of therapeutic intervention with ganciclovir [n = 16 (23.5%) vs n = 3 (4.9%), P = 0.003)]

    OBJECTIVE: What are the electrogustometer's (EGM) validity, reliability, and diagnostic accuracy in assessing taste sensation in adults compared to other taste tests?DATA SOURCES: PubMed Medline, Elseviers's Embase, and the six databases of Cochrane Library.METHODS: We conducted a systematic search on December 20, 2022, consisting of synonyms for EGM. We considered randomized controlled trials and observational studies with original data for inclusion if they included adults who underwent electrogustometry. Articles were excluded if no analysis regarding validity, reliability, or diagnostic accuracy had been performed or if these analyses could not be performed with the published data.RESULTS: Nineteen articles discussing 18 studies were included for data extraction. The included studies carry a high risk of bias. Overall, the association between a variety of reference taste tests and EGM was moderate or weak with correlation coefficients ranging from -0.51 to 0.40 with one outlier of -0.74 found in one study correlating EGM and taste solutions. Test-retest reliability was good with reported correlation coefficients between 0.78 and 1.0. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of EGM in identifying abnormal taste function varied widely between the four studies on diagnostic accuracy.CONCLUSION: The included studies in this review lack the required standards regarding study design to draw firm conclusions about the validity, reliability, and diagnostic accuracy of the EGM. Future research is needed to assess these measurement properties. Based on the reported results, we would not recommend using the EGM as a screening test for taste disturbance in clinical practice.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: NA.</p
