    Charge induced stability of water droplets in subsaturated environment

    Atmospheric liquid and solid water particles are stabilized if they are coated with either negative or positive electric charge. The surface charge causes an increase of the partial pressure of water vapour close to the surface of each particle, effectively allowing the particles to remain in their condensed phase even if the environmental relative humidity drops below unity. The theory, briefly presented in this paper, predicts a zero parameter relation between surface charge density and water vapour pressure. This relation was tested in a series of Electrodynamic Balance experiments. The measurements were performed by stabilizing charged droplets of pure water near an ice-surface. We observed a divergence in radius as the temperature approached the freezing point from below. We find that the measurements confirm the theory within the experimental uncertainty. In some cases this generally overlooked effect may have impact on cloud processes and on results produced by Electrodynamic Balance experiments

    LACO-Wiki: A New Online Land Cover Validation Tool Demonstrated Using GlobeLand30 for Kenya

    Accuracy assessment, also referred to as validation, is a key process in the workflow of developing a land cover map. To make this process open and transparent, we have developed a new online tool called LACO-Wiki, which encapsulates this process into a set of four simple steps including uploading a land cover map, creating a sample from the map, interpreting the sample with very high resolution satellite imagery and generating a report with accuracy measures. The aim of this paper is to present the main features of this new tool followed by an example of how it can be used for accuracy assessment of a land cover map. For the purpose of illustration, we have chosen GlobeLand30 for Kenya. Two different samples were interpreted by three individuals: one sample was provided by the GlobeLand30 team as part of their international efforts in validating GlobeLand30 with GEO (Group on Earth Observation) member states while a second sample was generated using LACO-Wiki. Using satellite imagery from Google Maps, Bing and Google Earth, the results show overall accuracies between 53% to 61%, which is lower than the global accuracy assessment of GlobeLand30 but may be reasonable given the complex landscapes found in Kenya. Statistical models were then fit to the data to determine what factors affect the agreement between the three interpreters such as the land cover class, the presence of very high resolution satellite imagery and the age of the image in relation to the baseline year for GlobeLand30 (2010). The results showed that all factors had a significant effect on the agreement

    Experimental and theoretical study of oxygen precipitation and the resulting limitation of silicon solar cell wafers

    Commercial silicon is prone to form silicon oxide precipitates during high-temperature treatments typical for solar cell production. Oxide precipitates can cause severe efficiency degradation in solar cells. We have developed a model describing the nucleation and growth of oxide precipitates that considers silicon self-interstitial defects and surface effects influencing the precipitate growth in ∼150 μm thick wafers during the solar cell processing. This kinetic model is calibrated with experiments that cause a well-defined and strong precipitate growth to give a prediction of the carrier lifetime limitation because of the oxide precipitates. We test the oxide precipitate model with scanning Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, selective etching, and lifetime measurements on typical Cz solar cell wafers before and after solar cell processes. Despite the relatively rough saw damaged etched surfaces and the thin wafers, we observe recurring ring patterns in the measurements of interstitial oxygen reductions, oxide precipitate etch pit density, and recombination activity by photoluminescence imaging. The concentration of precipitated oxygen correlates with the recombination activity and with the initial interstitial oxygen concentration. However, we found lifetime measurements to be a more sensitive technique to study oxide precipitates and using these we find smaller precipitates not detected by selective etching are very recombination active too. The measured concentrations of precipitated oxygen and lifetime agree fairly well with the predictions of the model

    Emerging threats and opportunities to managed bee species in European agricultural systems: a horizon scan

    Managed bee species provide essential pollination services that contribute to food security worldwide. However, managed bees face a diverse array of threats and anticipating these, and potential opportunities to reduce risks, is essential for the sustainable management of pollination services. We conducted a horizon scanning exercise with 20 experts from across Europe to identify emerging threats and opportunities for managed bees in European agricultural systems. An initial 63 issues were identified, and this was shortlisted to 21 issues through the horizon scanning process. These ranged from local landscape-level management to geopolitical issues on a continental and global scale across seven broad themes-Pesticides & pollutants, Technology, Management practices, Predators & parasites, Environmental stressors, Crop modification, and Political & trade influences. While we conducted this horizon scan within a European context, the opportunities and threats identified will likely be relevant to other regions. A renewed research and policy focus, especially on the highest-ranking issues, is required to maximise the value of these opportunities and mitigate threats to maintain sustainable and healthy managed bee pollinators within agricultural systems
