Positive recurrence of reflecting Brownian motion in three dimensions
Consider a semimartingale reflecting Brownian motion (SRBM) whose state
space is the -dimensional nonnegative orthant. The data for such a process
are a drift vector , a nonsingular covariance matrix
, and a reflection matrix that specifies the boundary
behavior of . We say that is positive recurrent, or stable, if the
expected time to hit an arbitrary open neighborhood of the origin is finite for
every starting state. In dimension , necessary and sufficient conditions
for stability are known, but fundamentally new phenomena arise in higher
dimensions. Building on prior work by El Kharroubi, Ben Tahar and Yaacoubi
[Stochastics Stochastics Rep. 68 (2000) 229--253, Math. Methods Oper. Res. 56
(2002) 243--258], we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for stability
of SRBMs in three dimensions; to verify or refute these conditions is a simple
computational task. As a byproduct, we find that the fluid-based criterion of
Dupuis and Williams [Ann. Probab. 22 (1994) 680--702] is not only sufficient
but also necessary for stability of SRBMs in three dimensions. That is, an SRBM
in three dimensions is positive recurrent if and only if every path of the
associated fluid model is attracted to the origin. The problem of recurrence

"Is There a Wage Payoff to Innovative Work Practices?"
During the 1980s, wage inequality increased dramatically and the American economy lost many high wage, low- to medium-skill jobs, which had provided middle class incomes to less skilled workers. Increasingly, less skilled workers seemed restricted to low wage jobs lacking union or other institutional protections. Although "good" jobs for less skilled workers are unlikely to return in their previous form, a number of sociologists, economists, and industrial relations scholars have suggested that a new paradigm of work, often called "high performance," is emerging, which offers such workers more skilled jobs and higher wages. Using a unique national data set we find little evidence that high performance work systems are associated with higher wages.

Handling congestion in crowd motion modeling
We address here the issue of congestion in the modeling of crowd motion, in
the non-smooth framework: contacts between people are not anticipated and
avoided, they actually occur, and they are explicitly taken into account in the
model. We limit our approach to very basic principles in terms of behavior, to
focus on the particular problems raised by the non-smooth character of the
models. We consider that individuals tend to move according to a desired, or
spontanous, velocity. We account for congestion by assuming that the evolution
realizes at each time an instantaneous balance between individual tendencies
and global constraints (overlapping is forbidden): the actual velocity is
defined as the closest to the desired velocity among all admissible ones, in a
least square sense. We develop those principles in the microscopic and
macroscopic settings, and we present how the framework of Wasserstein distance
between measures allows to recover the sweeping process nature of the problem
on the macroscopic level, which makes it possible to obtain existence results
in spite of the non-smooth character of the evolution process. Micro and macro
approaches are compared, and we investigate the similarities together with deep
differences of those two levels of description
Mesothelioma and thymic tumors: Treatment challenges in (outside) a network setting
The management of patients with mesothelioma and thymic malignancy requires continuous multidisciplinary expertise at any step of the disease. A dramatic improvement in our knowledge has occurred in the last few years, through the development of databases, translational research programs, and clinical trials. Access to innovative strategies represents a major challenge, as there is a lack of funding for clinical research in rare cancers and their rarity precludes the design of robust clinical trials that could lead to specific approval of drugs. In this context, patient-centered initiatives, such as the establishment of dedicated networks, are warranted. International societies, such as IMIG (International Mesothelioma Interest Group) and ITMIG (International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group) provide infrastructure for global collaboration, and there are many advantages to having strong regional groups working on the same issues. There may be regional differences in risk factors, susceptibility, management and outcomes. The ability to address questions both regionally as well as globally is ideal to develop a full understanding of mesothelioma and thymic malignancies. In Europe, through the integration of national networks with EURACAN, the collaboration with academic societies and international groups, the development of networks in thoracic oncology provides multiplex integration of clinical care and research, ultimately ensuring equal access to high quality care to all patients, with the opportunity of conducting high level clinical and translational research projects
Synthetic observations of first hydrostatic cores in collapsing low-mass dense cores II. Simulated ALMA dust emission maps
First hydrostatic cores are predicted by theories of star formation, but
their existence has never been demonstrated convincingly by (sub)millimeter
observations. Furthermore, the multiplicity at the early phases of the star
formation process is poorly constrained. The purpose of this paper is twofold.
First, we seek to provide predictions of ALMA dust continuum emission maps from
early Class 0 objects. Second, we show to what extent ALMA will be able to
probe the fragmentation scale in these objects. Following our previous paper
(Commer\c{c}on et al. 2012, hereafter paper I), we post-process three
state-of-the-art radiation-magneto-hydrodynamic 3D adaptive mesh refinement
calculations to compute the emanating dust emission maps. We then produce
synthetic ALMA observations of the dust thermal continuum from first
hydrostatic cores. We present the first synthetic ALMA observations of dust
continuum emission from first hydrostatic cores. We analyze the results given
by the different bands and configurations and we discuss for which combinations
of the two the first hydrostatic cores would most likely be observed. We also
show that observing dust continuum emission with ALMA will help in identifying
the physical processes occurring within collapsing dense cores. If the magnetic
field is playing a role, the emission pattern will show evidence of a
pseudo-disk and even of a magnetically driven outflow, which pure
hydrodynamical calculations cannot reproduce. The capabilities of ALMA will
enable us to make significant progress towards understanding fragmentation at

Amyloid and the origin of life : self-replicating catalytic amyloids as prebiotic informational and protometabolic entities
A crucial stage in the origin of life was the emergence of the first molecular entity that was able to replicate, transmit information, and evolve on the early Earth. The amyloid world hypothesis posits that in the pre-RNA era, information processing was based on catalytic amyloids. The self-assembly of short peptides into beta-sheet amyloid conformers leads to extraordinary structural stability and novel multifunctionality that cannot be achieved by the corresponding nonaggregated peptides. The new functions include self-replication, catalytic activities, and information transfer. The environmentally sensitive template-assisted replication cycles generate a variety of amyloid polymorphs on which evolutive forces can act, and the fibrillar assemblies can serve as scaffolds for the amyloids themselves and for ribonucleotides proteins and lipids. The role of amyloid in the putative transition process from an amyloid world to an amyloid-RNA-protein world is not limited to scaffolding and protection: the interactions between amyloid, RNA, and protein are both complex and cooperative, and the amyloid assemblages can function as protometabolic entities catalyzing the formation of simple metabolite precursors. The emergence of a pristine amyloid-based in-put sensitive, chiroselective, and error correcting information-processing system, and the evolvement of mutualistic networks were, arguably, of essential importance in the dynamic processes that led to increased complexity, organization, compartmentalization, and, eventually, the origin of life.Peer reviewe
