In the present paper the author describes the research carried out at the University of Sassari on the utilization as fuels or chemical feedstocks of oils derived from plants. Examination of the results obtained with oils derived from Euphorbiae vegetanting in Sardinia suggests to orient the studies toward the isolation of fine chemicals rather then toward the utilization as fuels, directly
or after pyrolysis. This conclusion is supported by the
comparison of data on three Sardinian Euphorbiae and by considerations on the Sardinian land
Role of the polygalacturonate network on the iron (III) reduction by caffeic acid
This communication reports the role of polygalacturonate network on the Fe(III) reduction by caffeic acid. The effect of phosphate ions on the redox reaction is also considered
The Ophiolite of Pompeano
The Ophiolite of Pompeano, which is made up of dark green to blackish, massive or brecciated serpentines, with clasts of different sizes (deriving originally from tectonic peridotites) is located in the mid-valley of the River Rossenna (Modena Apennines). A very interesting cave is present on the northern face of the outcrop; it probably originated along a tectonic discontinuity but was subsequently enlarged by slope movements
Increasing wood mobilization through Sustainable Forest Management in protected areas of Italy
The European Community has long recognized the need to further promote renewable energy. Under the overall objective to support and enhance sustainable management, the promotion of the use of forest biomass could help to mitigate climate change by substituting fossil fuel, increasing carbon stock in wood products and improve energy self-sufficiency enhancing security of supply and providing job opportunities in rural areas. To what extent Italian forests can satisfy an increased wood demand, without compromising the others Ecosystem Services (ESs) remains an open question. Our aim was to assess the potential supply of woody biomass from the network of protected areas in Italy considering the felling constraints. We estimated the theoretical annual potential increment from forest inventory data performing a correlation with the Corine Land Cover 2006 at the IV level with a 1:100,000 resolution elaborated in a GIS (Geographic Information System) environment. The average annual potential increment at national level available for felling was 4.4 m3ha-1. Within the network of protected areas (EUAP and Natura 2000), the average annual increment, available to felling, was 0.98 m3ha-1, respectively, 0.81 m3ha-1 from coppice and 1.14 m3ha-1 from non-coppice forests. Based on data obtained from this study, the availability of wood materials could be increased of almost 20 % at national level by pursuing an active management within the network of protected areas. In Italy, the actual level of resource utilization is rather low; increasing felling together with the implementation of an active management within protected areas could allow satisfying, theoretically, the Italian wood consumption
A symmetric cryptographic scheme for data integrity verification in cloud databases
Cloud database services represent a great opportunity for companies and organizations in terms of management and cost savings. However, outsourcing private data to external providers leads to risks of confidentiality and integrity violations. We propose an original solution based on encrypted Bloom filters that addresses the latter problem by allowing a cloud service user to detect unauthorized modifications to his outsourced data. Moreover, we propose an original analytical model that can be used to minimize storage and network overhead depending on the database structure and workload. We assess the effectiveness of the proposal as well as its performance improvements with respect to existing solutions by evaluating storage and network costs through micro-benchmarks and the TPC-C workload standard
Does uncertainty in single indicators affect the reliability of composite indexes? An application to the measurement of environmental performances of Italian regions
In recent decades, the measurement and evaluation of important social and natural phenomena has significantly evolved, with many traditional measurements based on single variables increasingly being replaced by multi- dimensional approaches. One key aspect of these approaches is the development of composite indexes, usually real-value functions of multiple achievements of a group of units. The achievements in each of the selected dimensions are generally synthesised through one or more variables, often referred to as indicators. When in- dicators are obtained through an estimation process, it is crucial to understand if and how their estimation error – for example, sampling error – affects the resulting composite index.
This paper presents a methodology based on a parametric bootstrap technique that evaluates to what extent uncertainty in indicators affects the reliability of the aggregate composite index. The method is applied to four composite indexes measuring the environmental performances of Italian regions based on real population and survey data.
To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to measure the impact of indicators’ sampling error on composite indexes. If adequately generalised, our methodology could be used in the presence of measurement errors, non- response issues, or other kinds of non-sampling errors
