    Nilpotent maximal subgroups of GLn(D)

    AbstractIn [S. Akbari, J. Algebra 217 (1999) 422–433] it has been conjectured that if D is a noncommutative division ring, then D∗ contains no nilpotent maximal subgroup. In connection with this conjecture we show that if GLn(D) contains a nilpotent maximal subgroup, say M, then M is abelian, provided D is infinite. This extends one of the main results appeared in [S. Akbari, J. Algebra 259 (2003) 201–225, Theorem 4]

    Short-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome in Term Neonates Treated with Phenobarbital versus Levetiracetam: A Single-Center Experience

    BACKGROUND: Phenobarbital (PB) has been traditionally used as the first-line treatment for neonatal seizures. More recently, levetiracetam (LEV) has been increasingly used as a promising newer antiepileptic medication for treatment of seizures in neonates. OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to compare the effect of PB vs. LEV on short-term neurodevelopmental outcome in infants treated for neonatal seizures. METHOD: This randomized, one-blind prospective study was conducted on term neonates admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of S. Bambino Hospital, University Hospital "Policlinico-Vittorio Emanuele," Catania, Italy, from February 2016 to February 2018. Thirty term neonates with seizures were randomized to receive PB or LEV; the Hammersmith Neonatal Neurological Examination (HNNE) was used at baseline (T0) and again one month after the initial treatment (T1). RESULTS: We found a significantly positive HNNE score for the developmental outcomes, specifically tone and posture, in neonates treated with LEV. There was no significant improvement in the HNNE score at T1 in the neonates treated with PB. CONCLUSION: This study suggests a positive effect of levetiracetam on tone and posture in term newborns treated for neonatal seizures. If future randomized-controlled studies also show better efficacy of LEV in the treatment of neonatal seizures, LEV might potentially be considered as the first-line anticonvulsant in this age grou

    Reducing the anxiety of patients undergoing an oral biopsy by means of graphic novels: an open-label randomized clinical trial

    Background: The use of graphic novels is a trending topic in health communication as a new form of visual storytelling which explores narratives of health care, cancer, healing, and disability. The objective of the present study was to evaluate - for the first time in the literature - the effect of graphic novels in reducing the anxiety of patients waiting for an incisional biopsy in an oral oncology setting. Material and methods: This open-label randomized clinical trial comprised 50 patients with a clinical suspicion of oral potentially malignant disorders. Twenty-five patients were randomly allocated to the test group, and a colourful graphic novel was provided. Subsequently, the Beck Depression Inventory and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 were administered to all 50 recruited patients, after which a biopsy was performed on each patient. Results: No statistically significant difference was observed between the test and control groups for the variables regarding the demographic data (p>0.2). There was a significant difference after the introduction of the graphic novel, regardless of which questionnaire was used. The graphic novel demonstrated an improvement in the ability of the test group to tolerate anxiety while waiting for an oral biopsy in both psychological tests (p<0.05). Conclusions: In light of these initial positive results, the authors of this study would like to suggest the use of graphic novels in oral oncology, dentistry, and medicine with the aim of reducing patient anxiety

    Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in a cancer patient receiving lenvatinib

    Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is an adverse drug reaction that affects the mandible and maxilla of patients exposed to bone-targeting agents such as anti-resorptive and anti-angiogenic agents. Several MRONJ cases have been reported after dental extractions in patients under treatment with anti-angiogenic agents, including receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL) inhibitor, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) monoclonal antibody, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). The aim of this article was to describe an original case of lenvatinib-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in a patient affected by thyroid cancer. A 58-year-old man diagnosed with Hurthle cell thyroid cancer, who was undergoing treatment with lenvatinib, developed maxillary osteonecrosis after a dental extraction. No other concomitant local or systemic risk factors for MRONJ were present. With new cancer therapies applied every year, it is important to note this novel case of lenvatinib osteonecrosis of the jaw in a patient undergoing cancer treatment

    Protein cargo of salivary small extracellular vesicles as potential functional signature of oral squamous cell carcinoma

    The early diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is still an investigative challenge. Saliva has been proposed as an ideal diagnostic medium for biomarker detection by mean of liquid biopsy technique. The aim of this pilot study was to apply proteomic and bioinformatic strategies to determine the potential use of saliva small extracellular vesicles (S/SEVs) as a potential tumor biomarker source. Among the twenty-three enrolled patients, 5 were free from diseases (OSCC_FREE), 6 were with OSCC without lymph node metastasis (OSCC_NLNM), and 12 were with OSCC and lymph node metastasis (OSCC_LNM). The S/SEVs from patients of each group were pooled and properly characterized before performing their quantitative proteome comparison based on the SWATH_MS (Sequential Window Acquisition of all Theoretical Mass Spectra) method. The analysis resulted in quantitative information for 365 proteins differentially characterizing the S/SEVs of analyzed clinical conditions. Bioinformatic analysis of the proteomic data highlighted that each S/SEV group was associated with a specific cluster of enriched functional network terms. Our results highlighted that protein cargo of salivary small extracellular vesicles defines a functional signature, thus having potential value as novel predict biomarkers for OSCC

    Expanding commonsense knowledge bases by learning from image tags

    I present a method for learning new commonsense facts to augment existing commonsense knowledge bases by using the metadata of large online image collections. Online image collections present a source of knowledge that is supported by many contributors, has good representation of objects and their properties, and is visual. The collection's broad support of objects and object properties ensure the relevance and quality of the commonsense knowledge collected, while the visual focus provides a different subset of knowledge than typical text corpora. Using the image metadata provides a text representation of the visual information. Therefore, I can use classifiers trained on existing text-based knowledge bases to learn relationships between concepts represented in the images. I collect two datasets of more than 1 million images each, one consisting of animal images, one of room interiors. The images are tagged with relevant concepts by their owners. I train classifiers using facts from two popular commonsense knowledge bases, ConceptNet and Freebase, to classify the relationships between frequent concept pairs. The output is a list of more than 90,000 proposed facts, which are in neither source knowledge base
