    Determinants associated with obesity and physical activity in the public and private schools of the city of palermo

    Introduction: Obesity is a medical condition associated with premature death and it is a risk factor for many chronic diseases. In this context, performing a regular physical activity promotes a healthy lifestyle, with significant health benefits. The aim of the study was to investigate behaviors that increase the risk of obesity and the determinants that encourage physical activity among adolescents. Materials and methods: The HBSC (Health Behavior in School-aged Children) questionnaire was administered to students in Palermo's private and public schools. For the sampling of public schools the protocol of the HBSC Surveillance System was followed; for the private ones it was opportunistic. Results: Private school students are more likely to exercise more than 3 days per week (OR 1.58) and are more likely to exercise more than 2 times a week (OR 2.08). Obese students in private schools in Palermo are more likely to perform physical activity for less than 3 days a week (OR 3.52) and a higher risk of not having breakfast (OR 10.11) and a snack between main meals (OR 3.82) every day. For all the schools examined, it emerged that obese subjects are more likely not to consume fruit (OR 3.13), to stay more than 6 hours a day in front of PCs and video games (OR 3.24) and more than 2 hours a day in front of TV (OR 3.79). Male students are more likely to perform physical activity for more than 3 days per week (OR 1.48) and intense physical activity at least 2 times per week (OR 1.76) Conclusions: It is necessary to intervene early with training on school and family in order to promote correct and responsible food choices and increase the level of physical activity among students. Therefore prevention interventions must be an integral part of coherent strategies based on tests of agreed effectiveness in order to minimize the risk linked to the development of diseases

    Muon-spin-rotation measurements of the penetration depth in Li_2Pd_3B

    Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth λ\lambda in the ternary boride superconductor Li2_2Pd3_3B (Tc≃7.3T_c\simeq7.3 K) have been carried out by means of muon-spin rotation (μ\muSR). The absolute values of λ\lambda, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ\kappa, and the first Hc1H_{c1} and the second Hc2H_{c2} critical fields at T=0 obtained from μ\muSR were found to be λ(0)=252(2)\lambda(0)=252(2) nm, κ(0)=27(1)\kappa(0)=27(1), μ0Hc1(0)=9.5(1)\mu_0H_{c1}(0)=9.5(1) mT, and μ0Hc2(0)=3.66(8)\mu_0H_{c2}(0)=3.66(8) T, respectively. The zero-temperature value of the superconducting gap Δ0=\Delta_0=1.31(3) meV was found, corresponding to the ratio 2Δ0/kBTc=4.0(1)2\Delta_0/k_BT_c=4.0(1). At low temperatures λ(T)\lambda(T) saturates and becomes constant below T≃0.2TcT\simeq 0.2T_c, in agreement with what is expected for s-wave BCS superconductors. Our results suggest that Li2_2Pd3_3B is a s-wave BCS superconductor with the only one isotropic energy gap.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Comparative evaluation of synergy of combinations of \u3b2-lactams with fluoroquinolones or macrolides in Streptococcus pneumoniae

    OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus pneumoniae has shown a great ability to develop efficacious mechanisms of resistance to the main drugs for the treatment of pneumonia, such as \u3b2-lactams, macrolides and fluoroquinolones. The present study aimed to compare the antipneumococcal activity of combinations of respiratory fluoroquinolones with cephalosporins (either parenteral or oral) or protected penicillin versus the standard combinations (i.e. a macrolide with a protected penicillin or cephalosporin) against 100 isolates with different susceptibilities to macrolides and/or penicillin. METHODS: Chequerboard assays for all isolates and time-kill curves for nine isolates with different patterns of susceptibility were performed. Synergy between antibiotics at serum peak concentrations was also determined. RESULTS: The combination of levofloxacin with ceftriaxone produced the highest rate of synergy (54/100), mainly against macrolide-resistant strains (22/30). Antagonism was not observed for any tested combination apart from clarithromycin with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (22/100 isolates). Although the killing activities of all antibiotics improved when they were tested in combination, synergy was observed only for some combinations after 12 and/or 24 h. Serum concentrations were effective in inhibiting the growth of the tested strains. CONCLUSIONS: Combinations of levofloxacin with parenteral cephalosporins were the most active among all the tested combinations, while antagonism occurred when clarithromycin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid were tested

    AbstractSeveral studies have reported that the centromeric end of bovine chromosome 14 harbours QTL for milk production and composition traits. The acyl-Coenzyme A:diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) gene was indicated to be the quantitative trait gene affecting these traits with a major effect on milk fat content. A two bp mutation in exon 8 causing a nonconservative lysine to alanine amino acid substitution at codon 232 (K232A) showed a confirmed effect across breeds with allele K resulting associated with an increase on fat yield, fat percentage and protein percentage while allele A was associated with higher milk yield. Another mutation in the 5' regulatory region of this gene, a variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) of 18 bp, was suggested to affect fat percentage. The objective of the present work was to investigate the occurrence of the DGAT1 K232A and VNTR polymorphisms in several Italian dairy and dual purpose cattle breeds as a first step to evaluate their effects on milk production trait..

    Long-term effects of a multidisciplinary treatment of uncomplicated obesity on carotid intima-media thickness

    Obesity is associated with well-known cardiovascular risk factors and a lower life expectancy. This study investigated whether nonoperative nutritional treatment of obesity without comorbidities influenced the carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT) in the long run. Fifty-four subjects of an original cohort of 251 subjects were re-evaluated 10 years after a medical nutritional treatment (MNT) with cognitive-behavioral approach for uncomplicated obesity. Forty subjects were classified as failure (10-year body weight change >0.5 kg) and 14 (body weight change 640.5 kg) as a success of the MNT. Ten years after MNT, c-IMT significantly increased (0.06 \ub1 0.02 mm; P = 0.004) in the failure group and significantly decreased ( 120.07 \ub1 0.03 mm; P = 0.027) in the success group. Ten-year change in c-IMT correlated significantly with 10-year change in body weight (r = 0.28; P = 0.040). Multiple stepwise linear regression analysis demonstrated that age, final BMI, and group (success or failure) influenced independently the 10-year c-IMT. In conclusion, this study is in agreement with the possibility that the successful MNT of obesity may be an effective choice in the long run and seems to indicate that it may be able to reduce the cardiovascular risk as reflected by the change in c-IMT

    May osteoarticular infections be influenced by vitamin D status? An observational study on selected patients

    BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with a high number of health outcomes, and its role on the immune system has been deeply investigated in recent years, although poor data are still available on vitamin D status in orthopedic infections including those of prosthetic implants. METHODS: We focused on preoperative values of 25(OH)D in selected groups of patients with septic (Group A) or aseptic (Group B) prosthetic loosening, infective bone disease such as septic arthritis and osteomyelitis (Group C) and other orthopedic pathologies (Group D) to evaluate differences in the vitamin D status. RESULTS: A high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was recorded among the study population (16.5\u2009\ub1\u20095.4 ng/mL, mean\u2009\ub1\u2009SD). Interestingly, all patients with an infection presented a higher 25(OH)D concentration (17.7\u2009\ub1\u20095.3 ng/mL) in respect to uninfected ones (15.1\u2009\ub1\u20095.6 ng/mL). Significantly higher levels of 25(OH)D were observed in patients with prosthetic joint infection (18.5\u2009\ub1\u20096.5 ng/mL), when compared with those presenting an aseptic loosening (13.6\u2009\ub1\u20099.4 ng/mL). CONCLUSIONS: Deficiency in vitamin D levels have been found in orthopaedic patients. Prosthetic joint infections seems to be associated to higher values of vitamin D in respect to other bone infections or to other orthopaedic conditions requiring surgery. More studies are needed to improve the knowledge on vitamin D status in these patients and to better clarify the role of vitamin D in relation to osteoarticular infections

    Nanoscale Photoluminescence Manipulation in Monolithic Porous Silicon Oxide Microcavity Coated with Rhodamine-Labeled Polyelectrolyte via Electrostatic Nanoassembling

    Porous silicon (PSi) is a promising material for future integrated nanophotonics when coupled with guest emitters, still facing challenges in terms of homogenous distribution and nanometric thickness of the emitter coating within the silicon nanostructure. Herein, it is shown that the nanopore surface of a porous silicon oxide (PSiO2) microcavity (MC) can be conformally coated with a uniform nm-thick layer of a cationic light-emitting polyelectrolyte, e.g., poly(allylamine hydrochloride) labeled with Rhodamine B (PAH-RhoB), leveraging the self-tuned electrostatic interaction of the positively-charged PAH-RhoB polymer and negatively-charged PSiO2 surface. It is found that the emission of PAH-RhoB in the PSiO2 MC is enhanced (≈2.5×) and narrowed (≈30×) at the resonant wavelength, compared with that of PAH-RhoB in a non-resonant PSiO2 reference structure. The time-resolved photoluminescence analysis highlights a shortening (≈20%) of the PAH-RhoB emission lifetime in the PSiO2 MC at the resonance versus off-resonance wavelengths, and with respect to the reference structure, thereby proving a significant variation of the radiative decay rate. Remarkably, an experimental Purcell factor Fp = 2.82 is achieved. This is further confirmed by the enhancement of the photoluminescence quantum yield of the PAH-RhoB in the PSiO2 MC with respect to the reference structure. Application of the electrostatic nanoassembling approach to other emitting dyes, nanomaterials, and nanophotonic systems is envisaged

    The World Association against Infection in Orthopaedics and Trauma (WAIOT) procedures for Microbiological Sampling and Processing for Periprosthetic Joint Infections (PJIs) and other Implant-Related Infections

    While implant-related infections continue to play a relevant role in failure of implantable biomaterials in orthopaedic and trauma there is a lack of standardised microbiological procedures to identify the pathogen(s). The microbiological diagnosis of implant-related infections is challenging due to the following factors: the presence of bacterial biofilm(s), often associated with slow-growing microorganisms, low bacterial loads, previous antibiotic treatments and, possible intra-operative contamination. Therefore, diagnosis requires a specific set of procedures. Based on the Guidelines of the Italian Association of the Clinical Microbiologists (AMCLI), the World Association against Infection in Orthopaedics and Trauma has drafted the present document. This document includes guidance on the basic principles for sampling and processing for implant-related infections based on the most relevant literature. These procedures outline the main microbiological approaches, including sampling and processing methodologies for diagnostic assessment and confirmation of implant-related infections. Biofilm dislodgement techniques, incubation time and the role of molecular approaches are addressed in specific sections. The aim of this paper is to ensure a standardised approach to the main microbiological methods for implant-related infections, as well as to promote multidisciplinary collaboration between clinicians and microbiologists

    Relationship Between Cardiovascular Disease Knowledge and Race/Ethnicity, Education, and Weight Status

    Background: Inadequate cardiovascular disease (CVD) knowledge has been cited to account for the imperfect decline in CVD among women over the last 2 decades. Hypothesis: Due to concerns that at-risk women might not know the leading cause of death or symptoms of a heart attack, our goal was to assess the relationship between CVD knowledge race/ethnicity, education, and body mass index (BMI). Methods: Using a structured questionnaire, CVD knowledge, socio-demographics, risk factors, and BMI were evaluated in 681 women. Results: Participants included Hispanic, 42.1% (n = 287); non-Hispanic white (NHW), 40.2% (n = 274); non-Hispanic black (NHB), 7.3% (n = 50); and Asian/Pacific Islander (A/PI), 8.7% (n = 59). Average BMI was 26.3 ± 6.1 kg/m2. Hypertension was more frequent among overweight (45%) and obese (62%) than normal weight (24%) (P 12 years (both P < 0.0001). Conclusions: Effective prevention strategies for at-risk populations need to escalate CVD knowledge and awareness among the undereducated and minority women

    In vitro comparison between &#945;-tocopheryl acetate and &#945;-tocopheryl phosphate against bacteria responsible of prosthetic and joint infections

    Biofilm-related infections represent a recurrent problem in the orthopaedic setting. In recent years, great interest was directed towards the identification of novel molecules capable to interfere with pathogens adhesion and biofilm formation on implant surfaces. In this study, two stable forms of \u3b1-tocopherol, the hydrophobic acetate ester and the water-soluble phosphate ester, were tested in vitro as coating for titanium prosthesis. Antimicrobial activity against microorganisms responsible of prosthetic and joints infections was assessed by broth microdilution method. In addition, \u3b1-tocopherol esters were evaluated for both their ability to hamper bacterial adhesion to and biofilm formation on sandblasted titanium surfaces. Results showed that only \u3b1-tocopheryl phosphate displayed antimicrobial activity against the tested strains. Both esters were able to significantly interfere with bacterial adhesion and to prevent biofilm formation, especially by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The activity of \u3b1-tocopheryl phosphate was greater than that of \u3b1-tocopheryl acetate. Alterations at membrane levels have been reported in literature and may be likely responsible for the interference on bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation shown by \u3b1-tocopherol esters. Although further studies are needed to better investigate the mechanisms of action and the spectrum of activity of \u3b1-tocopherol esters, these characteristics together with the positive effect on wound healing and immune response, make these molecules promising candidate for coating in order to prevent implant-associated infections
