    Fully Automatic Danger Zone Determination for SBRT in NSCLC

    Lung cancer is the major cause of cancer death worldwide. The most common form of lung cancer is non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC). Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has emerged as a good alternative to surgery in patients with peripheralstage I NSCLC, demonstrating favorable tumor control and low toxicity. Due to spatial relationship to several critical organs atrisk, SBRT of centrally located lesions is associated with more severe toxicity and requires modification in dose application andfractionation, which is currently evaluated in clinical trials. Therefore a classification of lung tumors into central or peripheralis required. In this work we present a novel, highly versatile, mulitmodality tool for tumor classification which requires no userinteraction. Furthermore the tool can automatically segment the trachea, proximal bronchial tree, mediastinum, gross target volumeand internal target volume. The proposed work is evaluated on 19 cases with different image modalities assessing segmentationquality as well as classification accuracy. Experiments showed a good segmentation quality and a classification accuracy of 95 %.These results suggest the use of the proposed tool for clinical trials to assist clinicians in their work and to fasten up the workflowin NSCLC patients treatment

    A holistic system approach for short range passenger aircraft with cryogenic propulsion system

    Currently, hybrid-electric aircraft are under investigation as one possible solution to reduce the emissions of the aviation industry according to Flightpath 2050 of the European Union. To meet the drive trainʼs requirements on low mass while aiming for highest efficiency, superconducting technologies are regarded as a key enabling technology for drive train powers of several tens of megawatts. Within the German nationally funded project TELOS an exemplary mission profile and the physical measures of a 220-passenger aircraft are used to derive the requirements for a cryogenic-cooled serial hybrid-electric propulsion system. To optimize the total system performance, we subsequently evaluated the superconducting and cryogenic-cooled components by using computationally fast, analytical models. This approach allows quantifying the system performance by using component technologies being available today. In particular, the system performance of geared drive to direct drive propulsion units are compared and the influence of the DC bus voltage and the electric frequencies of the AC circuits on the mass and the efficiency of the drive trains are analysed

    A Comparative Analysis of the Predictors, Extent and Impacts of Self-stigma in Patients with Psoriasis and Atopic Dermatitis

    The impact of dermatological diseases goes beyond symptoms and often includes psychosocial burden. Self-stigmatization plays a key role in this relationship and was compared in patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis to evaluate the validity of cross-disease stigmatization models. In total, 101 patients per indication were included in this cross-sectional study. Besides sociodemographic and clinical data, patient-reported outcome measures relating to self-stigmatization, depression, anxiety, and quality of life were compared across groups. Sociodemographic and clinical factors were tested for their moderating effects between self-stigmatization and quality of life. Group mean comparisons yielded no significant differences in self-stigmatization between patient groups. In both diseases, self-stigmatization significantly predicted depression and anxiety symptoms as well as quality of life. Current symptoms, not having close social relationships, and lower age predicted self-stigma in patients with psoriasis, whereas the involvement of sensitive body areas, the sum of previous treatments, and female sex were predictors in patients with atopic dermatitis. In both groups, symptoms had significantly moderating effects. The results underline the relevance of self-stigmatization in patients with chronic skin diseases. Awareness should be raised, screening implemented, and psychosocial support offered early on. Assessments, conceptual models of self-stigma, and interventions are probably applicable for both diseases

    Exploring the performance of implicit neural representations for brain image registration

    Abstract Pairwise image registration is a necessary prerequisite for brain image comparison and data integration in neuroscience and radiology. In this work, we explore the efficacy of implicit neural representations (INRs) in improving the performance of brain image registration in magnetic resonance imaging. In this setting, INRs serve as a continuous and coordinate based approximation of the deformation field obtained through a multi-layer perceptron. Previous research has demonstrated that sinusoidal representation networks (SIRENs) surpass ReLU models in performance. In this study, we first broaden the range of activation functions to further investigate the registration performance of implicit networks equipped with activation functions that exhibit diverse oscillatory properties. Specifically, in addition to the SIRENs and ReLU, we evaluate activation functions based on snake, sine+, chirp and Morlet wavelet functions. Second, we conduct experiments to relate the hyper-parameters of the models to registration performance. Third, we propose and assess various techniques, including cycle consistency loss, ensembles and cascades of implicit networks, as well as a combined image fusion and registration objective, to enhance the performance of implicit registration networks beyond the standard approach. The investigated implicit methods are compared to the VoxelMorph convolutional neural network and to the symmetric image normalization (SyN) registration algorithm from the Advanced Normalization Tools (ANTs). Our findings not only highlight the remarkable capabilities of implicit networks in addressing pairwise image registration challenges, but also showcase their potential as a powerful and versatile off-the-shelf tool in the fields of neuroscience and radiology

    Exploration of overlap volumes for radiotherapy plan evaluation with the aim of healthy tissue sparing.

    PURPOSE Development of a novel interactive visualization approach for the exploration of radiotherapy treatment plans with a focus on overlap volumes with the aim of healthy tissue sparing. METHODS We propose a visualization approach to include overlap volumes in the radiotherapy treatment plan evaluation process. Quantitative properties can be interactively explored to identify critical regions and used to steer the visualization for a detailed inspection of candidates. We evaluated our approach with a user study covering the individual visualizations and their interactions regarding helpfulness, comprehensibility, intuitiveness, decision-making and speed. RESULTS A user study with three domain experts was conducted using our software and evaluating five data sets each representing a different type of cancer and location by performing a set of tasks and filling out a questionnaire. The results show that the visualizations and interactions help to identify and evaluate overlap volumes according to their physical and dose properties. Furthermore, the task of finding dose hot spots can also benefit from our approach. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate the potential to enhance the current treatment plan evaluation process in terms of healthy tissue sparing

    Das Korpus HIPKON (Historisches Predigtenkorpus zum Nachfeld) wurde zur Untersuchung der Nachfeldbesetzung in der Entwicklung des Deutschen erstellt. Zwar existieren schon verschiedene datenbasierte Untersuchungen zum Nachfeld, jedoch sind deren Ergebnisse kaum miteinander vergleichbar, da sich die zugrunde gelegten Daten hinsichtlich der Textsorte oder des Dialektgebiets unterscheiden bzw. die verwendete Terminologie verschiedene Phänomene erfasst. Das neue Korpus soll dementsprechend zum ersten Mal die Vergleichbarkeit der Daten über einen größeren Zeitraum hinweg ermöglichen.Not Reviewe

    The Brain/MINDS Marmoset Connectivity Resource: an open access platform for cellular-level tracing and tractography in the primate brain

    The primate brain has unique anatomical characteristics, which translate into advanced cognitive, sensory and motor abilities. Thus, it is important that we gain insight on its structure, to provide a solid basis for models that will clarify function. Here we report on the implementation and features of the Brain/MINDS Marmoset Connectivity Resource (BMCR), a new open-access platform that provides access to high-resolution anterograde neuronal tracer data in the marmoset brain, integrated to retrograde tracer and tractography data. Unlike other existing image explorers, the BMCR allows visualization of data from different individuals and modalities in a common reference space. This feature, allied to an unprecedented high resolution, enables analyses of features such as reciprocity, directionality and spatial segregation of connections. The present release of the BMCR focuses on the prefrontal cortex, a uniquely developed region of the primate brain which is linked to advanced cognition, including the results of 52 anterograde and 164 retrograde tracer injections in the cortex of the marmoset. Moreover, the inclusion of tractography data from diffusion MRI allows systematic analyses of this non-invasive modality against gold-standard cellular connectivity data, enabling detection of false positives and negatives, which provide a basis for future development of tractography.
