EVALUATING GRADUATE STUDENT WRITING: DO STUDENTS WRITE FROM A STRENGTHS PERSPECTIVE?
There is growing evidence supporting the use of strengths based approaches to serving families. Professionals can positively impact family outcomes by using strengths based language when interacting with families. The purpose of this study was to examine the nature with which graduate student clinicians write from a strengths perspective. Specifically, we explored whether first year graduate student clinicians in speech language pathology use strengths based/ability focused language when documenting observations of children's' communication and behavior during play. We created videos of typically developing children in natural environments and gathered narrative writing samples broken down by phrase (N = 693 phrases) from graduate student clinicians. Students (N =29) participated in each of two conditions (A- general prompt; B- clinic prompt). Using a coding system developed by the research team, we analyzed the nature with which the student clinicians included strengths based language in their written documentation. Our findings indicated that the student clinicians in the current study generally used more neutral, ability focused language (than deficit based language) in their writing. However, when the student clinicians were led to believe the child in the video was coming to the clinic for an evaluation, they used less strengths based language. Findings from this study provide valuable information about how first year graduate students write when documenting observations of child behavior and communication and may serve as a guidepost for how we design academic training programs with respect to clinical documentation. Additionally, these findings emphasize the importance of ensuring that clinical training mentors use strengths based practices across training sites
The 55 Cancri Planetary System: Fully Self-Consistent N-body Constraints and a Dynamical Analysis
We present an updated study of the planets known to orbit 55 Cancri A using
1,418 high-precision radial velocity observations from four observatories
(Lick, Keck, Hobby-Eberly Telescope, Harlan J. Smith Telescope) and transit
time/durations for the inner-most planet, 55 Cancri "e" (Winn et al. 2011). We
provide the first posterior sample for the masses and orbital parameters based
on self-consistent n-body orbital solutions for the 55 Cancri planets, all of
which are dynamically stable (for at least years). We apply a GPU
version of Radial velocity Using N-body Differential evolution Markov Chain
Monte Carlo (RUN DMC; B. Nelson et al. 2014) to perform a Bayesian analysis of
the radial velocity and transit observations. Each of the planets in this
remarkable system has unique characteristics. Our investigation of high-cadence
radial velocities and priors based on space-based photometry yields an updated
mass estimate for planet "e" ( M), which affects its
density ( g cm) and inferred bulk composition.
Dynamical stability dictates that the orbital plane of planet "e" must be
aligned to within of the orbital plane of the outer planets (which we
assume to be coplanar). The mutual interactions between the planets "b" and "c"
may develop an apsidal lock about . We find 36-45% of all our model
systems librate about the anti-aligned configuration with an amplitude of
. Other cases showed short-term perturbations in the
libration of , circulation, and nodding, but we find the
planets are not in a 3:1 mean-motion resonance. A revised orbital period and
eccentricity for planet "d" pushes it further toward the closest known Jupiter

Efficiency versus thoroughness in medication review:A qualitative interview study in UK primary care
Physician attitude, awareness, and knowledge regarding guidelines for transcranial Doppler screening in sickle cell disease.
ObjectiveWe explored factors that may influence physician adherence to transcranial Doppler (TCD) screening guidelines among children with sickle cell disease.MethodsPediatric hematologists, neurologists, and primary care physicians (n = 706) responded to a mailed survey in May 2012 exploring factors hypothesized to influence physician adherence to TCD screening guidelines: physician (internal) barriers and physician-perceived external barriers. Responses were compared by specialty using chi-square tests.ResultsAmong 276 physicians (44%), 141 currently treated children with sickle cell disease; 72% recommend screening. Most primary care physicians (66%) did not feel well informed regarding TCD guidelines, in contrast to neurologists (25%) and hematologists (6%, P < .0001). Proportion of correct answers on knowledge questions was low (13%-35%). Distance to a vascular laboratory and low patient adherence were external barriers to receipt of TCD screening.ConclusionsAdditional research regarding physicians' lack of self-efficacy and knowledge of recommendations could help clarify their role in recommendation of TCD screening
Panoramic Views of the Cygnus Loop
We present a complete atlas of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant in the light
of [O III] (5007), H alpha, and [S II] (6717, 6731). Despite its shell-like
appearance, the Cygnus Loop is not a current example of a Sedov-Taylor blast
wave. Rather, the optical emission traces interactions of the supernova blast
wave with clumps of gas. The surrounding interstellar medium forms the walls of
a cavity through which the blast wave now propagates, including a nearly
complete shell in which non-radiative filaments are detected. The Cygnus Loop
blast wave is not breaking out of a dense cloud, but is instead running into
confining walls. The interstellar medium dominates not only the appearance of
the Cygnus Loop but also the continued evolution of the blast wave. If this is
a typical example of a supernova remnant, then global models of the

Missed Opportunities for Transcranial Doppler Screening Among Children With Sickle Cell Disease.
Transcranial Doppler (TCD) screening rates remain low among children with sickle cell disease (SCD). We assessed TCD screening rates and missed opportunities for TCD screening. Children 2 to 16 years old with SCD enrolled in Michigan Medicaid for ≥1 year (2007-2011) were identified through newborn screening. Receipt of TCD screening and presence of a missed opportunity (≥1 SCD-related outpatient visit, no TCD screening) were identified through administrative claims. Potential correlates of missed opportunities included SCD-related health services, comorbidities, and demographics. Logistic regression with generalized estimating equations modeled associations between a missed opportunity and correlates. Overall, 353 children contributed 1066 person-years. TCD screening was low yearly (10%-32%); missed opportunities occurred in 73% of the person-years. Increasing age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.11; confidence interval CI = 1.07, 1.15), previous TCD screening (OR = 0.26; CI = 0.16, 0.41), and 4 to 5 (OR = 0.48; CI = 0.26, 0.87) or ≥6 outpatient visits (OR = 0.26; CI = 0.14, 0.49) were associated with a missed opportunity. Reduction of missed opportunities is a potential strategy to increase TCD screening rates
Fire and human management of late Holocene ecosystems in southern Africa
Globally, fire is a primary agent for modifying environments through the long-term coupling of human and natural systems. In southern Africa, control of fire by humans has been documented since the late Middle Pleistocene, though it is unclear when or if anthropogenic burning led to fundamental shifts in the region\u27s fire regimes. To identify potential periods of broad-scale anthropogenic burning, we analyze aggregated Holocene charcoal sequences across southern Africa, which we compare to paleoclimate records and archaeological data. We show climate-concordant variability in mid-Holocene fire across much of the subcontinent. However, increased regional fire activity during the late Holocene (~2000 BP) coincides with archaeological change, especially the introduction and intensification of food production across the region. This increase in fire is not readily explained by climate changes, but rather reflects a novel way of using fire as a tool to manage past landscapes, with outcomes conditioned by regional ecosystem characteristics
Aggregates, Formational Emergence, and the Focus on Practice in Stone Artifact Archaeology
The stone artifact record has been one of the major grounds for investigating our evolution. With the predominant focus on their morphological attributes and technological aspects of manufacture, stone artifacts and their assemblages have been analyzed as explicit measures of past behaviors, adaptations, and population histories. This analytical focus on technological andmorphological appearance is one of the characteristics of the conventional approach for constructing inferences from this record. An equally persistent routine involves ascribing the emerged patterns and variability within the archaeological deposits directly to long-term central tendencies in human actions and cultural transmission. Here we re-evaluate this conventional approach. By invoking some of the known concerns and concepts about the formation of archaeological record, we introduce notions of aggregates and formational emergence to expand on the understanding of how artifacts accumulate, what these accumulations represent, and how the patterns and variability among them emerge. To infer behavior that could inform on past lifeways, we further promote a shift in the focus of analysis from the technological and morphological appearance of artifacts and assemblages to the practice of stone use. We argue for a more rigorous and multi-level inferential procedure in modeling behavioral adaptation and evolution
Major Fallacies Surrounding Stone Artifacts and Assemblages
While lithic objects can potentially inform us about past adaptations and behaviors, it is important to develop a comprehensive understanding of all of the various processes that influence what we recover from the archaeological record. We argue here that many assumptions used by archaeologists to derive behavioral inferences through the definition, conceptualization, and interpretation of both individual stone artifact forms and groups of artifacts identified as assemblages do not fit squarely with what we have learned from both ethnographic sources and analyses of archaeological materials. We discuss this in terms of two fallacies. The first is the fallacy of the “desired end product” in stone artifact manufacture, which also includes our ability to recognize such end products. The second fallacy has to do with the notions that lithic assemblages represent simple accumulations of contemporary behaviors and the degree to which the composition of the depositional units we study reliably match the kinds of activities that took place. Although it is beyond the scope of this paper to offer a comprehensive set of new methodologies and theoretical perspectives to solve these problems, our goal here is to stress the importance of rethinking some of our most basic assumptions regarding the nature of lithic objects and how they become part of the archaeological record. Such a revision is needed if we want to be able to develop research questions that can be addressed with the data we have available to us
