    Constraints on the behaviour and content of volatiles in Galápagos magmas from melt inclusions and nominally anhydrous minerals

    Despite their relatively low concentration in most oceanic basalts, volatile species (e.g. H2O, CO2 and S) have a disproportionately large influence on a wide range of mantle and magmatic processes. However, constraining the concentration of H2O (and other volatiles) in basaltic magmas is not straightforward as submarine glass analyses are influenced by assimilation of hydrothermal brines, and the melt inclusion record is often reset by post-entrapment processes. Nevertheless, in this study we show that it is possible to reconstruct a detailed history of the volatile content of basaltic magmas through integration of multiple discreet volatile records and careful consideration of secondary processes. We present new analyses of volatiles in olivine-hosted melt inclusions, melt embayments and nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMS, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene) found in basalts erupted on Floreana Island in the south-eastern Galápagos Archipelago. Our results indicate that the Floreana magmas, which are characterised by the most radiogenic Pb and Sr isotope signatures in the Galápagos Archipelago, contain H2O concentrations between 0.4 and 0.8 wt% (at a melt Mg# of 0.65, where Mg# = Mg/(Mg + Fe) molar). These are marginally greater than the H2O contents of magmas beneath Fernandina in the western Galápagos Archipelago (cf. 0.2–0.7 wt% H2O at Mg# = 0.65). While the volatile content of magmas from the western archipelago follow trends defined by concurrent mixing and crystallisation, NAMs from Floreana reveal the presence of rare, volatile-rich magmas (~2 wt% H2O) that form as a consequence of reactive porous flow in mush-dominated magmatic systems beneath the south-eastern Galápagos. Furthermore, the Floreana magmas have similar H2O/light Rare Earth Element ratios to basalts from the western Galápagos but contain F/Nd and Cl/K ratios that are ~2 – 3 times greater, indicating that the mantle source of the Floreana lavas might represent an important halogen reservoir in the Galápagos mantle plume

    The physicochemical characteristics of sub-volcanic magma storage regions have important implications for magma system dynamics and pre-eruptive behaviour. The architecture of magma storage regions located directly above high buoyancy flux mantle plumes (such as Kīlauea, Hawai’i and Fernandina, Galápagos) are relatively well understood. However, far fewer constraints exist on the nature of magma storage beneath ocean island volcanoes that are distal to the main zone of mantle upwelling or above low buoyancy flux plumes, despite these systems representing a substantial proportion of ocean island volcanism globally. To address this, we present a detailed petrological study of Isla Floreana in the Galápagos Archipelago, which lies at the periphery of the upwelling mantle plume and is thus characterised by an extremely low flux of magma into the lithosphere. Detailed in situ major and trace element analyses of crystal phases within exhumed cumulate xenoliths, lavas and scoria deposits, indicate that the erupted crystal cargo is dominated by disaggregated crystal-rich material (i.e., mush or wall rock). Trace element disequilibria between cumulus phases and erupted melts, as well as trace element zoning within the xenolithic clinopyroxenes, reveals that reactive porous flow (previously identified beneath mid-ocean ridges) is an important process of melt transport within crystal-rich magma storage regions. In addition, application of three petrological barometers reveal that the Floreana mush zones are located in the upper mantle, at a depth of 23.7±5.1 km. Our barometric results are compared to recent studies of high melt flux volcanoes in the western Galápagos, and other ocean island volcanoes worldwide, and demonstrate that the flux of magma from the underlying mantle source represents a first-order control on the depth and physical characteristics of magma storage

    Caldera resurgence during the 2018 eruption of Sierra Negra volcano, Galápagos Islands.

    Recent large basaltic eruptions began after only minor surface uplift and seismicity, and resulted in caldera subsidence. In contrast, some eruptions at Galápagos Island volcanoes are preceded by prolonged, large amplitude uplift and elevated seismicity. These systems also display long-term intra-caldera uplift, or resurgence. However, a scarcity of observations has obscured the mechanisms underpinning such behaviour. Here we combine a unique multiparametric dataset to show how the 2018 eruption of Sierra Negra contributed to caldera resurgence. Magma supply to a shallow reservoir drove 6.5 m of pre-eruptive uplift and seismicity over thirteen years, including an Mw5.4 earthquake that triggered the eruption. Although co-eruptive magma withdrawal resulted in 8.5 m of subsidence, net uplift of the inner-caldera on a trapdoor fault resulted in 1.5 m of permanent resurgence. These observations reveal the importance of intra-caldera faulting in affecting resurgence, and the mechanisms of eruption in the absence of well-developed rift systems

    Cryptic evolved melts beneath monotonous basaltic shield volcanoes in the Galápagos Archipelago

    Funder: Jeremy Willson Charitable Trust - research grantAbstract: Many volcanoes erupt compositionally homogeneous magmas over timescales ranging from decades to millennia. This monotonous activity is thought to reflect a high degree of chemical homogeneity in their magmatic systems, leading to predictable eruptive behaviour. We combine petrological analyses of erupted crystals with new thermodynamic models to characterise the diversity of melts in magmatic systems beneath monotonous shield volcanoes in the Galápagos Archipelago (Wolf and Fernandina). In contrast with the uniform basaltic magmas erupted at the surface over long timescales, we find that the sub-volcanic systems contain extreme heterogeneity, with melts extending to rhyolitic compositions. Evolved melts are in low abundance and large volumes of basalt flushing through the crust from depth overprint their chemical signatures. This process will only maintain monotonous activity while the volume of melt entering the crust is high, raising the possibility of transitions to more silicic activity given a decrease in the crustal melt flux

    Integrated petrological and geophysical constraints on magma system architecture in the western Galápagos Archipelago: insights from Wolf volcano

    The 2015 eruption of Wolf volcano was one of the largest eruptions in the Galápagos Islands since the onset of routine satellite-based volcano monitoring. It therefore provides an excellent opportunity to combine geophysical and petrological data, to place detailed constraints on the architecture and dynamics of sub-volcanic systems in the western archipelago. We present new geodetic models which show that pre-eruptive inflation at Wolf was caused by magma accumulation in a shallow flat-topped reservoir at ~1.1 km, whereas edifice-scale deformation during the eruption was related to a deflationary source at 6.1–8.8 km. Petrological observations suggest that the erupted material was derived from both a sub-volcanic mush and a liquid-rich magma body. Using a combination of olivine-plagioclase-augite-melt (OPAM) and clinopyroxene-melt barometry, we show that the majority of magma equilibration, crystallisation and mush entrainment occurred at a depth equal to or greater than the deep geodetic source, with little petrological evidence of material sourced from shallower levels. Hence, our multidisciplinary study does not support a fully trans-crustal magmatic system beneath Wolf volcano before the 2015 eruption, but instead indicates two discrete storage regions, with a small magma lens at shallow levels and the major zone of magma storage in the lower crust, from which most of the erupted material was sourced. A predominance of lower crustal magma storage has previously been thought typical of sub-volcanic systems in the eastern Galápagos Archipelago, but our new data suggest that this may also occur beneath the more active volcanoes of the western archipelago

    A first-principles based description of the Hf-Ni system supported by high-temperature synchrotron experiments

    Hf-Ni is an important binary system for high temperature alloys and shape memory alloys which has been investigated several times in the literature but often using samples of Hf contaminated by Zr. The thermodynamics of this system are remodeled in this work based on first-principles calculations and additional experiments using Hf with relatively low Zr contamination (0.25 wt. %). Diffusion couples in the Ni-rich portion of the Hf-Ni system heat treated at 1173, 1273 and 1373 K are used to measure phase stability and Hf solubility in the fcc phase. The solubility observed in fcc Ni from Ni/Ni50Hf50 (at.%) diffusion couples is larger than that observed in previous experiments. These results are the only source fit to during modeling of the fcc solubility to mitigate effects from Zr contamination. Data in the literature suggests that the high temperature crystal structure of the B33 NiHf phase is, in fact, the B2 structure. High temperature synchrotron measurements provide confirmation of this crystal structure. Modeling of the B2 phase was aided by first-principles calculations using special quasi-random structures (SQS). The present CALPHAD model will prove useful when designing shape memory alloys containing Hf and when modeling the Hf activity in Ni-base high temperature alloys

    Talking really does matter : lay perspectives from older people on talking about suicide in later life

    Background. The cumulative body of research on suicidality in later life describes its unique and complex features when compared to other population groups. Yet significant gaps exist in how research informs the further development of suitable interventions. The perspectives of older people are also limited in research findings. Aims: This exploratory study aimed to (1) identify potential barriers and enablers in discussing suicide thought and its expression in later life from the perspectives of lay older people, (2) explore where opportunities might occur in approach, place, relationships and, language with older people to discuss suicide thought and its expression Method: We conducted in-depth qualitative individual interviews with 15 people aged 70-89 years. This method helped to explore older peoples own lay perspectives on suicide thought in later life, how it is expressed, their understanding of where and how people might seek support. Results. Three themes emerged: 1) intergenerational and socio-cultural differences in suicide expression; 2) The normalization of suicide thoughts in later life, and 3) the importance and difficulties of everyday discussion and opportunities to express suicide thought. Conclusion. Suicide thought and its expression appear common and normalized in later life yet remain taboo and hidden. Participants revealed how such thoughts and behaviours are typically expressed through colloquial or ‘off-hand’ remarks and comments and the importance of authentic listening. The findings highlight the importance of more informal discussions around these topics and how care professionals, practitioners and providers might frame opportunities for dialogue with people who may want to access support. Further engagement with community informed participatory research methods in which older people provide their own perspectives and experiences is important in addressing these gaps. There is a need for co-design in developing screening, assessment and signposting outside of clinical settings that can be used in everyday caring relationships with people in later life

    Effect of 18F-fluciclovine positron emission tomography on the management of patients with recurrence of prostate cancer: Results from the FALCON Trial

    Purpose: Early and accurate localization of lesions in patients with biochemical recurrence (BCR) of prostate cancer may guide salvage therapy decisions. The present study, 18F-Fluciclovine PET/CT in biochemicAL reCurrence Of Prostate caNcer (FALCON; NCT02578940), aimed to evaluate the effect of 18F-fluciclovine on management of men with BCR of prostate cancer. Methods and Materials: Men with a first episode of BCR after curative-intent primary therapy were enrolled at 6 UK sites. Patients underwent 18F-fluciclovine positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) according to standardized procedures. Clinicians documented management plans before and after scanning, recording changes to treatment modality as major and changes within a modality as other. The primary outcome measure was record of a revised management plan postscan. Secondary endpoints were evaluation of optimal prostate specific antigen (PSA) threshold for detection, salvage treatment outcome assessment based on 18F-fluciclovine-involvement, and safety. Results: 18F-Fluciclovine was well tolerated in the 104 scanned patients (median PSA = 0.79 ng/mL). Lesions were detected in 58 out of 104 (56%) patients. Detection was broadly proportional to PSA level; ≤1 ng/mL, 1 out of 3 of scans were positive, and 93% scans were positive at PSA >2.0 ng/mL. Sixty-six (64%) patients had a postscan management change (80% after a positive result). Major changes (43 out of 66; 65%) were salvage or systemic therapy to watchful waiting (16 out of 66; 24%); salvage therapy to systemic therapy (16 out of 66; 24%); and alternative changes to treatment modality (11 out of 66, 17%). The remaining 23 out of 66 (35%) management changes were modifications of the prescan plan: most (22 out of 66; 33%) were adjustments to planned brachytherapy/radiation therapy to include a 18F-fluciclovine-guided boost. Where 18F-fluciclovine guided salvage therapy, the PSA response rate was higher than when 18F-fluciclovine was not involved (15 out of 17 [88%] vs 28 out of 39 [72%]). Conclusions: 18F-Fluciclovine PET/CT located recurrence in the majority of men with BCR, frequently resulting in major management plan changes. Incorporating 18F-fluciclovine PET/CT into treatment planning may optimize targeting of recurrence sites and avoid futile salvage therapy

    Means to an End: An Assessment of the Status-blind Approach to Protecting Undocumented Worker Rights

    This article applies the tenets of bureaucratic incorporation theory to an investigation of bureaucratic decision making in labor standards enforcement agencies (LSEAs), as they relate to undocumented workers. Drawing on 25 semistructured interviews with high-level officials in San Jose and Houston, I find that bureaucrats in both cities routinely evade the issue of immigration status during the claims-making process, and directly challenge employers’ attempts to use the undocumented status of their workers to deflect liability. Respondents offer three institutionalized narratives for this approach: (1) to deter employer demand for undocumented labor, (2) the conviction that the protection of undocumented workers is essential to the agency’s ability to regulate industry standards for all workers, and (3) to clearly demarcate the agency’s jurisdictional boundaries to preserve institutional autonomy and scarce resources. Within this context, enforcing the rights of undocumented workers becomes simply an institutional means to an end
