    A Study of Realtime Summarization Metrics

    Unexpected news events, such as natural disasters or other human tragedies, create a large volume of dynamic text data from official news media as well as less formal social media. Automatic real-time text summarization has become an important tool for quickly transforming this overabundance of text into clear, useful information for end-users including affected individuals, crisis responders, and interested third parties. Despite the importance of real-time summarization systems, their evaluation is not well understood as classic methods for text summarization are inappropriate for real-time and streaming conditions. The TREC 2013-2015 Temporal Summarization (TREC-TS) track was one of the first evaluation campaigns to tackle the challenges of real-time summarization evaluation, introducing new metrics, ground-truth generation methodology and dataset. In this paper, we present a study of TREC-TS track evaluation methodology, with the aim of documenting its design, analyzing its effectiveness, as well as identifying improvements and best practices for the evaluation of temporal summarization systems

    Conservation Status and Residential Transaction Prices: Initial Evidence from Dallas, Texas

    The traditional mechanisms of private covenants and public restrictions may not meet the needs of residential property owners who want to preserve a certain neighborhood style. Privately initiated and publicly enforced conservation district regulations can preserve desirable neighborhood characteristics and signal to buyers that neighborhood conformity will likely persist. We analyze residential transaction prices in Dallas, Texas and find premiums associated with residential properties within and buffering conservation district locations. These results are robust to the spatial autocorrelation common in residential transaction prices.

    Biodiversity in a forest island: reptiles and amphibians of the West African Togo Hills

    Our recent surveys of the herpetological diversity of the West African Togo Hills documented a total of 65 reptile and amphibian species, making Kyabobo National Park one of the most diverse sites surveyed in Ghana. We provide accounts for all species recorded along with photographs to aid in identification. We recorded 26 amphibians, including six new records for Kyabobo N. P., one of which is a record for the Togo Hills. Our collection of reptile species (22 lizards, 16 snakes, and one crocodile) also provides new records and range extensions for Kyabobo N. P., such as the first observation of the dwarf crocodile, Osteolaemus tetraspis. Amphibian species still lacking from our surveys in the Togo Hills include several species that are adapted to fast running water or large closed forests, like the Togo toad, Bufo togoensis and the slippery frog, Conraua derooi. Appropriate habitat for such species still remains in Kyabobo, highlighting the need for additional survey work. We draw attention to the importance of conserving forest stream habitats, which will in turn help ensure the persistence of forest-restricted species.     S986 in M67: A Totally-Eclipsing Binary at the Cluster Turnoff

    We have discovered that the star S986 in the old open cluster M67 has detectable total eclipses of depth 0.08 mag for the primary eclipse and 0.011 mag for the secondary eclipse (in I only). We confirm the detection of a third star in spectra contributing 11.5% +/- 1.5% of the total light in V band. The radial velocity of the third star indicates that it is a cluster member, but it is unclear whether it is physically associated with the eclipsing binary. Using spectroscopic and photometric data, we deconvolve the photometry of the three stars, and find that the primary star in the eclipsing binary is significantly hotter than the turnoff. The two most likely explanations are that the primary star is in a rapid phase of evolution near core hydrogen exhaustion (associated with the turnoff gap in M67's color-magnitude diagram), or that it is a blue straggler created during a stellar collision earlier in the cluster's history. Our detection of Li in the primary star tightly constrains possible formation mechanisms in the blue straggler explanation. Because S986 is often used to constrain tidal dissipation models, this may imply that the strength of tidal effects is underestimated.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, accepted for A

    Although the cost of solar technology has been reduced by nearly seventy percent in the last ten years, the cost of implementing solar panels for residential and commercial use has remained stagnant. Due to the lack of affordable, easily installable solar panel systems on residential properties, the goal of our Senior Design Project is to design a stand-alone solar tracking structure. Since the system is stand-alone, it can be easily implemented on a wide range of properties in most areas of California. Our design for the support of the solar tracking system is a two-pole structure, with a wide base under each pole to eliminate the need for a deep foundation. An electric gearmotor system will drive the rotational motion of the solar tracking function, due to its high power output and relatively affordable cost. A hydraulic damping and blocking system was incorporated to precisely control rotational motion. After testing the system for both tracking and static operation, an 11.4% increase power production was observed. Sunplanter solar tracking systems have the potential to provide a financially viable investment opportunity for customers while having a positive impact on the environment

    Understanding “Understanding” in Public Understanding of Science

    This study examines the conflation of terms such as “knowledge” and “understanding” in peer-reviewed literature, and tests the hypothesis that little current research clearly distinguishes between importantly distinct epistemic states. Two sets of data are presented from papers published in the journal Public Understanding of Science. In the first set, the digital text analysis tool, Voyant, is used to analyze all papers published in 2014 for the use of epistemic success terms. In the second set of data, all papers published in Public Understanding of Science from 2010–2015 are systematically analyzed to identify instances in which epistemic states are empirically measured. The results indicate that epistemic success terms are inconsistently defined, and that measurement of understanding, in particular, is rarely achieved in public understanding of science studies. We suggest that more diligent attention to measuring understanding, as opposed to mere knowledge, will increase efficacy of scientific outreach and communication efforts
