    LASR-Guided Stellar Photometric Variability Subtraction: The Linear Algorithm For Significance Reduction

    We develop a technique for removing stellar variability in the light curves of δ\delta-Scuti and similar stars. Our technique, which we name the Linear Algorithm for Significance Reduction (LASR), subtracts oscillations from a time series by minimizing their statistical significance in frequency space. We demonstrate that LASR can subtract variable signals of near-arbitrary complexity and can robustly handle close frequency pairs and overtone frequencies. We demonstrate that our algorithm performs an equivalent fit as prewhitening to the straightforward variable signal of KIC 9700322. We also show that LASR provides a better fit to seismic activity than prewhitening in the case of the complex δ\delta-Scuti KOI-976.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics.     Factors associated with increased propensity for hamstring injury in English Premier League soccer players

    The aim of this study was to concurrently model the influence of a number of physical and performance parameters on subsequent incidence of hamstring injury in a squad of English Premier League soccer players. Thirty six healthy, male, elite, professional soccer players (age 22.6 ± 5.2 years, height 1.81 ± 0.08 m, mass 75.8 ± 9.4 kg, lean mass 69.0 ± 8.0 kg) were assessed during the first week of pre-season training for anthropometry, flexibility, lower limb strength and power, speed and agility. Over the subsequent 45 week competitive season all hamstring injuries were diagnosed and recorded. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to link individual physical and performance capabilities with propensity to sustain a hamstring injury. A model containing age, lean mass, non-counter movement jump (NCM) performance and active hip flexion range of movement (ROM) was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with increased propensity for hamstring injury. Odds for sustaining an injury increased ×1.78 for each 1 year increase in age, ×1.47 for each 1 cm increase in NCM and ×1.29 for each 1° decrease in active range of hip flexion. Older, more powerful and less flexible soccer players are at greater risk of sustaining a hamstring injury. Support staff should identify such individuals and make appropriate interventions to minimise risk without compromising performance capabilities

    Community environment, cognitive impairment and dementia in later life: results from the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study

    Background: Few studies have investigated the impact of the community environment, as distinct from area deprivation, on cognition in later life. This study explores cross-sectional associations between cognitive impairment and dementia and environmental features at the community level in older people. Method: The postcodes of the 2424 participants in the year-10 interview of the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study in England were mapped into small area level geographical units (Lower-layer Super Output Areas) and linked to environmental data in government statistics. Multilevel logistic regression was conducted to investigate associations between cognitive impairment (defined as MMSE3 in GMS-AGECAT) and community level measurements including area deprivation, natural environment, land use mix and crime. Sensitivity analyses tested the impact of people moving residence within the last two years. Results: Higher levels of area deprivation and crime were not significantly associated with cognitive impairment and dementia after accounting for individual level factors. Living in areas with high land use mix was significantly associated with a nearly 60% reduced odds of dementia (OR: 0.4; 95% CI: 0.2, 0.8) after adjusting for individual level factors and area deprivation, but there was no linear trend for cognitive impairment. Increased odds of dementia (OR: 2.2, 95% CI: 1.2, 4.2) and cognitive impairment (OR: 1.4, 95% CI: 1.0, 2.0) were found in the highest quartile of natural environment availability. Findings were robust to exclusion of the recently relocated. Conclusion: Features of land use have complex associations with cognitive impairment and dementia. Further investigations should focus on environmental influences on cognition to inform health and social policies

    Expanding Space: the Root of all Evil?

    While it remains the staple of virtually all cosmological teaching, the concept of expanding space in explaining the increasing separation of galaxies has recently come under fire as a dangerous idea whose application leads to the development of confusion and the establishment of misconceptions. In this paper, we develop a notion of expanding space that is completely valid as a framework for the description of the evolution of the universe and whose application allows an intuitive understanding of the influence of universal expansion. We also demonstrate how arguments against the concept in general have failed thus far, as they imbue expanding space with physical properties not consistent with the expectations of general relativity.Comment: 8 pages, accepted for publication in PAS

    Motion analysis of match-play in elite U12 to U16 age-group soccer players

    The aim of this study was to quantify the motion demands of match-play in elite U12 to U16 age-group soccer players. Altogether, 112 players from two professional soccer clubs at five age-group levels (U12–U16) were monitored during competitive matches (n=14) using a 5 Hz non-differential global positioning system (NdGPS). Velocity thresholds were normalized for each age-group using the mean squad times for a flying 10 m sprint test as a reference point. Match performance was reported as total distance, high-intensity distance, very high-intensity distance, and sprint distance. Data were reported both in absolute (m) and relative (m min-1) terms due to a rolling substitute policy. The U15 (1.35±0.09 s) and U16 (1.31±0.06 s) players were significantly quicker than the U12 (1.58±0.10 s), U13 (1.52±0.07 s), and U14 (1.51±0.08 s) players in the flying 10 m sprint test (P U12, U13, U14), high-intensity distance (U16 > U12, U13, U14, U15), very high-intensity distance (U16 4 U12, U13), and sprint distance (U16 > U12, U13) than their younger counterparts (P<0.05). When the data are considered relative to match exposure, few differences are apparent. Training prescription for youth soccer players should consider the specific demands of competitive match-play in each age-group

    Human Apprenticeship Learning via Kernel-based Inverse Reinforcement Learning

    It has been well demonstrated that inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) is an effective technique for teaching machines to perform tasks at human skill levels given human demonstrations (i.e., human to machine apprenticeship learning). This paper seeks to show that a similar application can be demonstrated with human learners. That is, given demonstrations from human experts inverse reinforcement learning techniques can be used to teach other humans to perform at higher skill levels (i.e., human to human apprenticeship learning). To show this two experiments were conducted using a simple, real-time web game where players were asked to touch targets in order to earn as many points as possible. For the experiment player performance was defined as the number of targets a player touched, irrespective of the points that a player actually earned. This allowed for in-game points to be modified and the effect of these alterations on performance measured. At no time were participants told the true performance metric. To determine the point modifications IRL was applied on demonstrations of human experts playing the game. The results of the experiment show with significance that performance improved over the control for select treatment groups.     Cosmological Radar Ranging in an Expanding Universe

    While modern cosmology, founded in the language of general relativity, is almost a century old, the meaning of the expansion of space is still being debated. In this paper, the question of radar ranging in an expanding universe is examined, focusing upon light travel times during the ranging; it has recently been claimed that this proves that space physically expands. We generalize the problem into considering the return journey of an accelerating rocketeer, showing that while this agrees with expectations of special relativity for an empty universe, distinct differences occur when the universe contains matter. We conclude that this does not require the expansion of space to be a physical phenomenon, rather that we cannot neglect the influence of matter, seen through the laws of general relativity, when considering motions on cosmic scales.Comment: 6 Pages.     Relocation at older age: results from the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study.

    BACKGROUND: Community environment might play an important role in supporting ageing in place. This paper aims to explore relocation at older age and its associations with individual and community level factors. METHODS: The postcodes of the 2424 people in the year-10 interview of the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study (CFAS) in England were mapped onto Enumeration Districts and linked to their corresponding Townsend deprivation score and the 2011 rural/urban categories. Multilevel logistic regression was conducted to examine the influence of the baseline individual (age, gender, education and social class) and community (rural/urban categories and area deprivation) level factors on relocation over 10 years. RESULTS: One-third of people moved residence after the age of 65 years and over. Older age, low education, low social class and living in rural areas at baseline were associated with higher probability of moving later in life. The likelihood of relocation in later life increased from least to most deprived areas (odds ratio: 2.0, 95% confidence interval: 1.4, 2.8).
