A numerical test of the Y-system in the small size limit of the SU(2)x SU(2) Principal Chiral Model
Recently, Kazakov, Gromov and Vieira applied the discrete Hirota dynamics to
study the finite size spectra of integrable two dimensional quantum field
theories. The method has been tested from large values of the size L down to
moderate values using the SU(2) x SU(2) principal chiral model as a theoretical
laboratory. We continue the numerical analysis of the proposed non-linear
integral equations showing that the deep ultraviolet region L -> 0 is
numerically accessible. To this aim, we introduce a relaxed iterative algorithm
for the numerical computation of the low-lying part of the spectrum in the U(1)
sector. We discuss in details the systematic errors involved in the
computation. When a comparison is possible, full agreement is found with
previous TBA computations.Comment: 28 pages, 24 figure
Non-classical correlations in non-Markovian continuous variable systems
We consider two identical and non-interacting harmonic oscillators coupled to
either two independent bosonic baths or to a common bosonic bath. Under the
only assumption of weak coupling, we analyze in details the non-Markovian short
time-scale evolution of intensity correlations, entanglement and quantum
discord for initial two-mode squeezed-thermal vacuum states. In the independent
reservoirs case we observe the detrimental effect of the environment for all
these quantities and we establish a hierarchy for their robustness against the
environmental noise. In the common reservoir case, for initial uncorrelated
states, we find that only quantum discord can be created via interaction with
the bath, while entanglement and sub shot noise intensity correlations remain
absent.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Sudakov expansions at one loop and beyond for charged scalar and fermion pair production in SUSY models at future Linear Colliders
We consider the high energy behaviour of the amplitudes for pair production
of charged leptons, quarks, Higgs bosons, sleptons, squarks and charginos at
lepton colliders. We give the general expressions of the leading quadratic and
subleading linear logarithms that appear at the one loop level, and derive the
corresponding resummed expansions to \underline{subleading} logarithmic order
accuracy. Under the assumption of a relatively light SUSY scenario and choosing
the MSSM as a specific model, we compare the predictions of the one-loop and of
the resummed expansions at variable energy. We show that the two predictions
are very close in the one TeV regime, but drastically differ in the few ()
TeV range.Comment: 43 pages, 13 Encapsulated PostScript figure
Dominant BIN1-related centronuclear myopathy (CNM) revealed by lower limb myalgia and moderate CK elevation
We report a BIN1-related CNM family with unusual clinical phenotype. The proband, a 56-year-old man suffered of lower limbs myalgia since the age of 52. Clinical examination showed short stature, mild symmetric eyelid ptosis without ophthalmoplegia, scapular winging and Achilles tendon retraction. A muscle weakness was not noted. CK levels were up to 350 UI/L. Deltoid muscle biopsy showed nuclear centralization and clustering, deep sarcolemmal invaginations and type 1 fiber hypotrophy. Whole body MRI revealed fatty infiltration of posterior legs compartments, lumbar paraspinal and serratus muscles. Myotonic dystrophy type1 and 2, Pompe disease and MTM1 and DNM2-related CNM were ruled out. By sequencing BIN1, we identified a heterozygous pathogenic mutation [c.107C > A (p.A36E)], and we demonstrate that the mutation strongly impairs the membrane tubulation property of the protein. One affected sister carried the same mutation. Her clinical examination and muscle MRI revealed a similar phenotype. Our findings expand the clinical and genetic spectrum of the autosomal dominant CNM associated with BIN1 mutations
The Momentum Amplituhedron
In this paper we define a new object, the momentum amplituhedron, which is the long sought-after positive geometry for tree-level scattering amplitudes in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory in spinor helicity space. Inspired by the construction of the ordinary amplituhedron, we introduce bosonized spinor helicity variables to represent our external kinematical data, and restrict them to a particular positive region. The momentum amplituhedron M n,k is then the image of the positive Grassmannian via a map determined by such kinematics. The scattering amplitudes are extracted from the canonical form with logarithmic singularities on the boundaries of this geometry.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Investigation of resonant and transient phenomena in Josephson junction flux qubits
We present an analytical and computational study of resonances and transient
responses in a classical Josephson junction system. A theoretical basis for
resonances in a superconducting loop with three junctions is presented,
outlining both the direct relationship between the dynamics of single- and
multi-junction systems, and the direct relationships between observations of
the classical counterparts to Rabi oscillations, Ramsey fringes, and spin echo
oscillations in this class of systems. We show simulations data along with
analytical analyses of the classical model, and the results are related to
previously reported experiments conducted on three junction loops. We further
investigate the effect of off-resonant microwave perturbations to, e.g., the
Rabi-type response of the Josephson system, and we relate this response back to
the nonlinear and multi-valued resonance behavior previously reported for a
single Josephson junction. The close relationships between single and
multi-junction behavior demonstrates the underlying dynamical mechanism for a
whole class of classical counterparts to expected quantum mechanical
observations in a variety of systems; namely the resonant and transient
behavior of a particle in an anharmonic potential well with subsequent escape.Comment: 11 pages, seven figure
Formation of a Unique Cluster of G-Quadruplex Structures in the HIV-1 nef Coding Region: Implications for Antiviral Activity
G-quadruplexes are tetraplex structures of nucleic acids that can form in G-rich sequences. Their presence and functional role have been established in telomeres, oncogene promoters and coding regions of the human chromosome. In particular, they have been proposed to be directly involved in gene regulation at the level of transcription. Because the HIV-1 Nef protein is a fundamental factor for efficient viral replication, infectivity and pathogenesis in vitro and in vivo, we investigated G-quadruplex formation in the HIV-1 nef gene to assess the potential for viral inhibition through G-quadruplex stabilization. A comprehensive computational analysis of the nef coding region of available strains showed the presence of three conserved sequences that were uniquely clustered. Biophysical testing proved that G-quadruplex conformations were efficiently stabilized or induced by G-quadruplex ligands in all three sequences. Upon incubation with a G-quadruplex ligand, Nef expression was reduced in a reporter gene assay and Nef-dependent enhancement of HIV-1 infectivity was significantly repressed in an antiviral assay. These data constitute the first evidence of the possibility to regulate HIV-1 gene expression and infectivity through G-quadruplex targeting and therefore open a new avenue for viral treatment. © 2013 Perrone et al
Universal Finite Size Scaling Functions in the 3D Ising Spin Glass
We study the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with binary
interactions by Monte Carlo simulations. Direct evidence of finite-size scaling
is provided, and the universal finite-size scaling functions are determined.
Monte Carlo data are extrapolated to infinite volume with an iterative
procedure up to correlation lengths xi \approx 140. The infinite volume data
are consistent with a conventional power law singularity at finite temperature
Tc. Taking into account corrections to scaling, we find Tc = 1.156 +/- 0.015,
nu = 1.8 +/- 0.2 and eta = -0.26 +/- 0.04. The data are also consistent with an
exponential singularity at finite Tc, but not with an exponential singularity
at zero temperature.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 4 postscript figures include
Adiabatic and non-adiabatic phonon dispersion in a Wannier function approach
We develop a first-principles scheme to calculate adiabatic and non-adiabatic
phonon frequencies in the full Brillouin zone. The method relies on the
variational properties of a force-constants functional with respect to the
first-order perturbation of the electronic charge density and on the
localization of the deformation potential in the Wannier function basis. This
allows for calculation of phonon dispersion curves free from convergence issues
related to Brillouin zone sampling. In addition our approach justify the use of
the static screened potential in the calculation of the phonon linewidth due to
decay in electron-hole pairs. We apply the method to the calculation of the
phonon dispersion and electron-phonon coupling in MgB and CaC. In both
compounds we demonstrate the occurrence of several Kohn anomalies, absent in
previous calculations, that are manifest only after careful electron and phonon
momentum integration. In MgB, the presence of Kohn anomalies on the
E branches improves the agreement with measured phonon spectra and
affects the position of the main peak in the Eliashberg function. In CaC we
show that the non-adiabatic effects on in-plane carbon vibrations are not
localized at zone center but are sizable throughout the full Brillouin zone.
Our method opens new perspectives in large-scale first-principles calculations
of dynamical properties and electron-phonon interaction.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure
