    A neural network system for transformation of regional cuisine style

    We propose a novel system which can transform a recipe into any selected regional style (e.g., Japanese, Mediterranean, or Italian). This system has two characteristics. First the system can identify the degree of regional cuisine style mixture of any selected recipe and visualize such regional cuisine style mixtures using barycentric Newton diagrams. Second, the system can suggest ingredient substitutions through an extended word2vec model, such that a recipe becomes more authentic for any selected regional cuisine style. Drawing on a large number of recipes from Yummly, an example shows how the proposed system can transform a traditional Japanese recipe, Sukiyaki, into French style

    Photoelectro-Photometric Survey of Night Sky Conditions in the Vicinity of Iowa City

    During the summer 1962, a systematic survey of night sky conditions in the vicinity of Iowa City was carried out for the purpose of selecting the best site for the proposed research observatory of the State University of Iowa. A photoelectric photometer was attached to the Newtonian focus of an 11-inch reflector whose equatorial mounting was modified to a horizontal system. The equipment was carried by a truck and observations were made at six different sites, ranging in distance from eight to twenty-three miles in all directions from the city. In order to eliminate random errors due to variations in sky conditions from night to night, measurements of scattered city lights and the atmospheric extinctions were taken on at least two different sites during the same night and were repeated for six or seven different moonless nights at each site. As a result, it was concluded that the region about twelve miles south-southwest of the city is least affected by the artificial city light

    Pseudoconvex domains spread over complex homogeneous manifolds

    Using the concept of inner integral curves defined by Hirschowitz we generalize a recent result by Kim, Levenberg and Yamaguchi concerning the obstruction of a pseudoconvex domain spread over a complex homogeneous manifold to be Stein. This is then applied to study the holomorphic reduction of pseudoconvex complex homogeneous manifolds X=G/H. Under the assumption that G is solvable or reductive we prove that X is the total space of a G-equivariant holomorphic fiber bundle over a Stein manifold such that all holomorphic functions on the fiber are constant.Comment: 21 page

    Three Color Photometry of the Total Eclipse of the Moon, December 29, 1963

    A three-color photometry of the eclipsed moon was carried out with a 12-inch reflector during the total eclipse on December 30. 1963. In order to examine the intensity and color distribution of refracted light in the umbral region, the observation was centered at Mare Crisium during the course of the eclipse. The decrease in brightness was found to be about 16 magnitudes for each of the three colors, and no significant reddening effect was observed during the totality. The magnitude differences between different colors appear to be nearly the same on the uneclipsed and the totally eclipsed moon

    Structural evolution of granular systems: theory

    Funder: University of CambridgeA first-principles theory is developed for the general evolution of a key structural characteristic of planar granular systems - the cell order distribution. The dynamic equations are constructed and solved in closed form for a number of examples: dense systems undergoing progressive compaction; initial dilation of very dense systems; and the approach to steady state of general systems. It is shown that the convergence to steady state is exponential, except when contacts are only broken and no new contacts are made, in which case the approach is algebraic in time. Where no closed form solutions are possible, illustrative numerical solutions of the evolution are shown. These show that the dynamics are sensitive to the cell event rates, which are process dependent. The formalism can be extended to other structural characteristics, paving the way to a general theory of structural organisation of granular systems, parameterised by the contact event rates
