The following are brief synopses of the minutes of the meetings of the Hawaiian Entomological Society for the fiscal year 2015. The HES fiscal year runs from March 1 to the end of February of the following year. More detailed minutes are kept with the Secretary of the Society

First Records of Parasitoids Attacking the Asian Citrus Psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), in Hawaii

amarixia sp. prob. radiata (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Diaphoren- cyrtus aligharensis (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), two natural enemies released against the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) in various areas around the world, were discovered attacking this pest on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, in 2012

A New State Record Involving Nesolathrus (Coleoptera: Mycetophagidae)

The genus Nesolathrus (Mycetophagidae) is reported as a new record for the state of Hawaii, however, the species remains undetermined, as it differs from the unique species on which the genus is based. Big Island records include specimens reared from ohia twigs, Metrosideros polymorpha, from trees killed by Ceratocystis infections (Rapid Ohia Death)

New State Records and Additions to the Alien Terrestrial Arthropod Fauna in the Hawaiian Islands

An annotated list of 393 adventive terrestrial arthropod species plus three new varieties of known established species, which have been recorded in Hawaii since the Fourth Edition of Bishop Museum’s Hawaiian Terrestrial Arthro- pod Checklist (Nishida 2002), is presented. This compilation includes records of over 362 nonnative arthropod species published between the years of 2001 and 2017 as well as over 30 new Hawaii State records that have not been previously recorded. Annotations include date first detected, island distribution, citation, relevant biological notes, and for new state and island records, the collection data. A separate table with about 150 entries lists the synonyms, misidentifications, dele- tions, and changes of status for species included in the 2002 checklist that were discovered during our research. However, the latter list is not comprehensive as a complete revision of the 2002 checklist was beyond the scope of our project. Also included is a bibliography of the approximately 270 source documents that were consulted. We intend for this publication to be a useful supplement to the 2002 edition of the Hawaiian Terrestrial Arthropod Checklist

First Record of the Coffee Berry Borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867), on the Hawaiian Island of Lanai (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae)

    Get PDF
A survey for scolytine bark and ambrosia beetles undertaken on the entomologically understudied Hawaiian island of Lanai revealed for the first time the presence there of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867), a serious exotic pest of cultivated coffee. Lanai is chronologically the fourth Hawaiian island on which H. hampei has been found, following its initial detection on the island of Hawaii, followed by Oahu then Maui. We present the new records from Lanai in detail, together with a map of collecting sites and photographs of an adult specimen, demonstrating that the beetle is now widespread on Lanai, occurring at high and low elevations, and in both mesic and xeric environments

Adventive Thysanoptera Species in the Hawaiian Islands: New Records and Putative Host Associations

    Get PDF
Fifteen adventive species of Thysanoptera, comprising eight Thripidae and seven Phlaeothripidae, are recorded for the first time from the Hawaiian Islands. Four of these are native Australian species, seven are native to south- eastern Asia, with one species known only from Costa Rica and one known from several sites around the Caribbean. New host and locality records are given for a further 15 species, and the situation is noted that some species established on the Hawaiian Islands are pests in other parts of the world but have failed to become problematic here
