Starvation during L4-larval stage induces longevity in Caenorhabditis elegans

The effects of experiencing starvation during adolescence, during which significant physical growth and sexual maturation occurs, on adulthood have remained largely unknown. In addition, the influence of nutritional status during adolescence on brain maturation and function are discussed on the viewpoints of young people’s mental, psychology and behavior. In order to gain knowledge about the effects of starvation on adolescence, we starved the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans during its fourth larval stage (L4), and the lifespan and expression of genes in insulin/IGF-1 pathway, which is crucial to regulate lifespan, of the resulting adult worms were analyzed. The worm’s gonadogenesis and spermatogenesis take place during the L4 stage, making the stage a possible equivalence to human puberty. We found that worms which experienced starvation during their L4 stage had significantly longer lifespan, especially in the latter half of their lifespan, namely the aged worms lived longer. The relative expression of daf-16 in the insulin/IGF-1 pathway increased as worms become old, suggesting that the insulin/IGF-1 pathway functioned to extend lifespan in old worms. It was also observed that the locomotor ability (mobility) of L4-starved adult worms decreased. In addition, expression of ser-4, serotonin receptor, which was reported to be involved in lifespan regulation in worms, increased gradually toward late lifespan, suggesting that effect of experiencing starvation during L4 stage may also be regulated by serotonin. Our data posed a possibility that also in human, hunger and nutritional deficiencies in adolescence may affect health and activity in later adulthood

How can ‘Social Justice-oriented Health and Physical Education’ Contribute to the Problem of "Disparities" among Children?

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to focus on social justice in health and physical education and to review the previous studies on social justice-oriented health and physical education classes and teachers of health and physical education. In order to achieve this purpose, the literature review was used supporting the framework of justice, practice, and teacher training proposed by Cochran-Smith et al. (2010). As a result of examining previous studies on social justice-oriented health and physical education, the following four points were clarified; (1) The lack of research on teacher training within the health and physical education field, comparing with the amount of previous work done on practical research. (2) Differences in the research on the disparity in health and physical education at elementary, junior-high, and high-school levels. (3) Inequality of studies on physical education and health education regarding gender equality, sexual minorities, gender role image. (4) Difficulties and factors inhibiting the development of inclusive education classes during teacher training curriculum. The findings of this study promote the perspective of social justice, which no one should be excluded by their background or abilities, and the concept of social justice would be adopted by physical education teachers and their children

Mixed alkali-ion transport and storage in atomic-disordered honeycomb layered NaKNi2TeO6

Honeycomb layered oxides constitute an emerging class of materials that show interesting physicochemical and electrochemical properties. However, the development of these materials is still limited. Here, we report the combined use of alkali atoms (Na and K) to produce a mixed-alkali honeycomb layered oxide material, namely, NaKNi2TeO6. Via transmission electron microscopy measurements, we reveal the local atomic structural disorders characterised by aperiodic stacking and incoherency in the alternating arrangement of Na and K atoms. We also investigate the possibility of mixed electrochemical transport and storage of Na+ and K+ ions in NaKNi2TeO6. In particular, we report an average discharge cell voltage of about 4 V and a specific capacity of around 80 mAh g–1 at low specific currents (i.e., < 10 mA g–1) when a NaKNi2TeO6-based positive electrode is combined with a room-temperature NaK liquid alloy negative electrode using an ionic liquid-based electrolyte solution. These results represent a step towards the use of tailored cathode active materials for “dendrite-free” electrochemical energy storage systems exploiting room-temperature liquid alkali metal alloy materials

A Genealogy of Child-Focused Ethnography Research: Questioning the Significance of its Use in Pedagogy of Physical Education

This study aimed to organize and examine the trend of ethnographic research in education and its use in physical education pedagogy. The results clarified the following points. First, ethnography in education can be applied to describe a wide range of events related to children from the micro to the macro levels; Second, it can be used in physical education pedagogy to approach problems that are difficult to visualize, such as "educational disparities" in physical fitness and disparities in interest regarding exercise, from an academic perspective. Ethnography in physical education pedagogy can be used to investigate the root causes of children's dislike of physical education and exercise, and clarify issues that are not easily revealed, such as dealing with children who do not want to be talked about in terms of gender in physical education, that is, gender binaries. This can be done by observing and analyzing children

Unmasked insulinoma occasioned by severe hypoglycemic coma immediately postpartum: a case report

Abstract Background Insulinoma in women during pregnancy and postpartum is very rare; approximately 65% of cases are diagnosed early in pregnancy and ~ 35% immediately after delivery, few being found in middle or late pregnancy, likely due to increased insulin resistance seen after early-stage pregnancy. We successfully treated a case of insulinoma in which severe hypoglycemic coma immediately after delivery occasioned detailed investigation and diagnosis. Case presentation Our patient experienced hypoglycemic coma in the 3rd month of pregnancy (initially considered due to her hyperemesis gravidarum) that improved spontaneously during the gestational period. No abnormalities of plasma glucose or body weight were found in regular checkups during her pregnancy; however, recurrence of hypoglycemic coma after delivery led us to suspect insulinoma. While contrast enhanced computer tomography and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) initially failed to detect a tumor in the pancreas, selective arterial calcium stimulation test revealed an insulin-secreting tumor localized in the pancreatic body. She then underwent spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy; a 10-mm tumor positive for chromogranin A, synaptophysin and insulin was identified. Conclusions Although pregnancy can mask insulinoma-associated symptoms and make diagnosis challenging, hypoglycemic episodes during early pregnancy, which were observed in this case, are suggestive of insulinoma. Importantly, in this case, accurate preoperative localization of the tumor enabled prompt curative surgery after delivery. Thus, clinical vigilance for the occurrence of insulinoma and its localization is appropriate for pregnant women suffering severe hypoglycemia
