    A commentary on the eleventh book of the Punica of Silius Italicus

    Preface: The scope of the commentary is limited. I have been concerned with establishing the diction of Silius in Book 11. I have shown which words are confined to epic, which words are poetic and which words are prosaic. I have not attempted to establish whether there is a correlation between Silius' use of 'poetic' and' prosaic' words and the content of what he is saying. But I have noticed that Silius frequently uses prosaic words when he is following Livy or some other historical source. In other cases, Silius may be using prosaic words because of his own training as an orator. He is clearly indebted to Cicero. Nor have I attempted to establish whether there is any particular effect when Silius uses a'poetic' or 'prosaic' word or phrase or construction. I have been influenced by considerations of length and also by the fact that I believe any such attempted interpretation, although it might produce valuable results, would of necessity be much more subjective than what I have actually done. I leave any such interpretation to future researchers of Silius

    The Penguin: a Low Reynolds Number Powered Glider for Station Keeping Missions

    The Penguin is a low Reynolds number (approx. 100,000) remotely piloted vehicle (RPV). It was designed to fly three laps indoors around two pylons in a figure-eight course while maximizing loiter time. The Penguin's low Reynolds number mission is an important one currently being studied for possible future flights in the atmospheres of other planets and for specialized military missions. Although the Penguin's mission seemed quite simple at first, the challenges of such low Reynolds number flight have proven to be quite unique. In addition to the constraint of low Reynolds number flight, the aircraft had to be robust in its control, highly durable, and it had to carry a small instrument package.     Clinical symptoms and performance on the continuous performance test in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder between subtypes: a natural follow-up study for 6 months

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aims of this study were to determine the time course of improvements in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) clinical symptoms and neurocognitive function in a realistic clinical setting, and the differences in ADHD symptom improvement using different classifications of ADHD subtypes.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was completed by parents of ADHD children at the initial visit. The computerized Continuous Performance Test (CPT), Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham, and Version IV Scale for ADHD (SNAP-IV), and ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD-RS) were performed at baseline, one month, three months, and six months later, respectively. Patient care including drug therapy was performed at the discretion of the psychiatrist. The ADHD patients were divided into DSM-IV subtypes (Inattentive, Hyperactive-impulsive and Combined type), and were additionally categorized into aggressive and non-aggressive subtypes by aggression scale in CBCL for comparisons.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were 50 ADHD patients with a mean age of 7.84 ± 1.64 years; 15 of them were inattentive type, 11 were hyperactive-impulsive type, and 24 were combined type. In addition, 28 of the ADHD patients were grouped into aggressive and 22 into non-aggressive subtypes. There were significant improvements in clinical symptoms of hyperactivity and inattention, and impulsivity performance in CPT during the 6-month treatment. The clinical hyperactive symptoms were significantly different between ADHD patients sub-grouping both by DSM-IV and aggression. Non-aggressive patients had significantly greater changes in distraction and impulsivity performances in CPT from baseline to month 6 than aggressive patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We found that ADHD symptoms, which included impulsive performances in CPT and clinical inattention and hyperactivity dimensions, had improved significantly over 6 months under pragmatic treatments. The non-aggressive ADHD patients might have a higher potential for improving in CPT performance than aggressive ones. However, it warrant further investigation whether the different classifications of ADHD patients could be valid for predicting the improvements in ADHD patients' clinical symptoms and neurocognitive performance.</p

    The clinical utility of the continuous performance test and objective measures of activity for diagnosing and monitoring ADHD in children: a systematic review

    Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is typically diagnosed using clinical observation and subjective informant reports. Once children commence ADHD medication, robust monitoring is required to detect partial or non-responses. The extent to which neuropsychological continuous performance tests (CPTs) and objective measures of activity can clinically aid the assessment and titration process in ADHD is not fully understood. This review describes the current evidence base for the use of CPTs and objectively measured activity to support the diagnostic procedure and medication management for children with ADHD. Four databases (PsycINFO, Medline, Allied and Complementary Medicine (AMED) and PsycARTICLES) were systematically searched to understand the current evidence base for: (1) the use of CPTs to aid clinical assessment of ADHD; (2) the use of CPTs to aid medication management; (3) the clinical utility of objective measures of activity in ADHD. Sixty relevant articles were identified. The search revealed six commercially available CPTs that had been reported on for their clinical use. There were mixed findings with regard to the use of CPTs to assess and manage medication, with contrasting evidence on their ability to support clinical decision making. There was a strong evidence base for the use of objective measures of activity to aid ADHD/non-ADHD group differentiation, which appears sensitive to medication effects and would also benefit from further research on their clinical utility. The findings suggest that combining CPTs and an objective measure of activity may be particularly useful as a clinical tool and worthy of further pursuit

    Catalytic C(sp3)-H bond activation in tertiary alkylamines.

    The development of robust catalytic methods to assemble tertiary alkylamines provides a continual challenge to chemical synthesis. In this regard, transformation of a traditionally unreactive C-H bond, proximal to the nitrogen atom, into a versatile chemical entity would be a powerful strategy for introducing functional complexity to tertiary alkylamines. A practical and selective metal-catalysed C(sp3)-H activation facilitated by the tertiary alkylamine functionality, however, remains an unsolved problem. Here, we report a Pd(II)-catalysed protocol that appends arene feedstocks to tertiary alkylamines via C(sp3)-H functionalization. A simple ligand for Pd(II) orchestrates the C-H activation step in favour of deleterious pathways. The reaction can use both simple and complex starting materials to produce a range of multifaceted Îł-aryl tertiary alkylamines and can be rendered enantioselective. The enabling features of this transformation should be attractive to practitioners of synthetic and medicinal chemistry as well as in other areas that use biologically active alkylamines

    "Scary stuff": parents' self-seeking of information via the internet following their child's diagnosis with cystic fibrosis

    Objective: To explicate the information seeking behaviours of parents of an infant diagnosed with CF.\ud \ud Background: The diagnosis of their child with cystic fibrosis (CF) is a devastating event compounded for most parents by CF being a hitherto unknown entity. Information and education are vital to their processing what is CF, its implications for their child and family, and their efficacious engagement with care. While health carers may plan a metered presentation of information and education, parents reportedly pursue further facts for themselves as they seek to process their child's redefined health status.\ud \ud Method: This qualitative inquiry was conducted to inform the development of a national survey of parent information needs beyond newborn screening (NBS). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents (n=10) of infants aged from 1 to 3 years diagnosed with CF following NBS. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed.\ud \ud Results: Following diagnosis, participants reported embarking on a quest to find out all they could about this disease, which some had heard but had little reliable integral knowledge. Their pursuit was born of a desire to "get everything we could” and "to know the answers." There was also a desire to supplement formal hospital literature, described as outdated, and a need to do their own searching. However, the internet gave them access to often unregulated information for which novice parents had neither the ability nor insight to discern the relevance or reliability of, despite trying to "stick to reputable websites." Many reported resultant negative feelings coupled with a sense of information overload, particularly when first confronted with statistical and lifespan predictions, or emotive pictorial depictions. Several participants conveyed regret; "backing away" from accessing noninteractive, unsupported sources of information, which for some had engendered fear, summarised by one participant as "scary stuff."\ud \ud Findings: Imparting information to parents, especially in the initial diagnostic phase, will always be a process of balancing need-to-know with measured timing and context. Findings from this study can equip CF care teams with insight into the art of balancing information and guiding parents, who are likely to access the relatively unregulated world of the internet. Maintenance of currency in official websites and a user-friendly perspective regarding content and its display is also recommended
