Plasmonic Oligomers with Tunable Conductive Nanojunctions

International audienceEngineering plasmonic hot-spots is essential for applications of plasmonic nanoparticles. A particularly appealing route is to weld plasmonic nanoparticles together to form more complex structures sustaining plasmons with symmetries targeted to given applications. However, thecontrol of the welding and subsequent hotspot characteristic is still challenging. Herein, we demonstrate an original method that connects gold particles to their neighbors by another metal of choice. We first assemble gold bipyramids in a tip-to-tip configuration, yielding short chainsof variable length and grow metallic junctions in a second step. We follow the chain formation and the deposition of the second metal (i.e. silver or palladium) via UV/Vis spectroscopy and we map the plasmonic properties using electron energy loss spectroscopy. The formation ofsilver bridges leads to a huge redshift of the longitudinal plasmon modes into the mid-infrared region, while the addition of palladium results in a redshift accompanied by significant plasmon damping

M. Nicolas Sarkozy a présenté le 4 mai 2004 un plan de relance de l’économie française. Ce plan vise à abaisser le taux d’épargne des français pour stimuler la croissance dans un contexte de rigueur budgétaire. Nous évaluons principalement trois mesures. 1) Un crédit d’impôt sur les intérêts versés au cours des années 2004 et 2005 au titre du crédit à la consommation. Ce crédit d’impôt pourrait augmenter la consommation de 1 milliard d’euros pour un coût budgétaire de l’ordre de 400 millions d’euros par an. 2) L’exonération de droits sur les donations anticipées inférieures à 20 000 euros. Cette mesure induirait un transfert des plus âgés vers les plus jeunes entre 0 et 8,8 milliards d’euros pour un effet sur la consommation entre 0 et 500 millions d’euros. 3) Le déblocage anticipé des réserves de participation. Cette mesure pourrait conduire au déblocage de 3 milliards d’euros de réserves de participation et avoir un impact comparable sur la consommation.Etude réalisée par l’OFCE à la demande de l’Assemblée nationale, le 11 mai 2004, en vue de la proposition de résolution tendant à créer une commission d’enquête sur la dégradation des comptes publiés depuis 2002 de Monsieur le député Didier Migau

Lethal Nipah Virus Infection Induces Rapid Overexpression of CXCL10

Nipah virus (NiV) is a recently emerged zoonotic Paramyxovirus that causes regular outbreaks in East Asia with mortality rate exceeding 75%. Major cellular targets of NiV infection are endothelial cells and neurons. To better understand virus-host interaction, we analyzed the transcriptome profile of NiV infection in primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells. We further assessed some of the obtained results by in vitro and in vivo methods in a hamster model and in brain samples from NiV-infected patients. We found that NiV infection strongly induces genes involved in interferon response in endothelial cells. Among the top ten upregulated genes, we identified the chemokine CXCL10 (interferon-induced protein 10, IP-10), an important chemoattractant involved in the generation of inflammatory immune response and neurotoxicity. In NiV-infected hamsters, which develop pathology similar to what is seen in humans, expression of CXCL10 mRNA was induced in different organs with kinetics that followed NiV replication. Finally, we showed intense staining for CXCL10 in the brain of patients who succumbed to lethal NiV infection during the outbreak in Malaysia, confirming induction of this chemokine in fatal human infections. This study sheds new light on NiV pathogenesis, indicating the role of CXCL10 during the course of infection and suggests that this chemokine may serve as a potential new marker for lethal NiV encephalitis

Extracellular acidification stimulates GPR68 mediated IL-8 production in human pancreatic β cells.

International audienceAcute or chronic metabolic complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis are often associated with extracellular acidification and pancreatic β-cell dysfunction. However, the mechanisms by which human β-cells sense and respond to acidic pH remain elusive. In this study, using the recently developed human β-cell line EndoC-βH2, we demonstrate that β-cells respond to extracellular acidification through GPR68, which is the predominant proton sensing receptor of human β-cells. Using gain- and loss-of-function studies, we provide evidence that the β-cell enriched transcription factor RFX6 is a major regulator of GPR68. Further, we show that acidic pH stimulates the production and secretion of the chemokine IL-8 by β-cells through NF-кB activation. Blocking of GPR68 or NF-кB activity severely attenuated acidification induced IL-8 production. Thus, we provide mechanistic insights into GPR68 mediated β-cell response to acidic microenvironment, which could be a new target to protect β-cell against acidosis induced inflammation
