The South African child death review pilot: A multiagency approach to strengthen healthcare and protection for children
Background. Child mortality trends in South Africa (SA) show a decrease, but remain high and appear to have plateaued. To attain the new sustainable development goals, we need a better understanding of causes of death and the associated factors.Objectives. To describe the SA child death review (CDR) pilot, the pattern of child deaths reviewed and the factors associated with these deaths.Methods. CDR teams were established at two pilot sites, Salt River mortuary (Western Cape Province) and Phoenix mortuary (KwaZulu-Natal Province). All child deaths were reviewed by a multidisciplinary team at the pilot sites for the period 1 January 2014 - 31 December 2014.Results. The CDR pilot reviewed 711 cases. Over half (53.3%) were natural deaths, as opposed to 42.6% non-natural deaths. Most infant deaths (83.9%) were due to natural causes, while 91.7% of deaths in the 15 - 17-year-old age group were due to injuries. The leading cause of deaths reviewed (30.8%) was respiratory tract infection (RTI), mainly among infants (51.6%). Homicide was the second most common cause of death and affected children of all ages, with the highest burden (52.8%) in the 15 - 17-year age group. Child abuse and neglect accounted for 11.3% of deaths. RTI was shown to be more likely after the neonatal period (odds ratio (OR) 2.92; p<0.000) and in preterm infants (OR 1.98; p=0.005).Conclusions. CDR teams have been effective in improving identification of the causes of out-of-hospital deaths, as well as by identifying remediable factors critical to reducing child deaths further
Energy Spectra of Reactor Neutrinos at KamLAND
The upcoming reactor neutrino experiment, KamLAND, has the ability to explore
the Large Mixing Angle (LMA) solution to the solar neutrino problem. Here, we
investigate the precision to which KamLAND should be able to measure these
parameters, utilizing the distortion of the energy spectrum of reactor
neutrinos. Incomplete knowledge of the fuel composition of the reactors will

Amplitudes With Different Helicity Configurations Of Noncommutative QED
The amplitudes of purely photonic and photon{2-fermion processes of non-
commutative QED (NCQED) are derived for different helicity configurations of
photons. The basic ingredient is the NCQED counterpart of Yang-Mills recursion
relations by means of Berends and Giele. The explicit solutions of recursion
relations for NCQED photonic processes with special helicity configurations are

Testing the Nature of Kaluza-Klein Excitations at Future Lepton Colliders
With one extra dimension, current high precision electroweak data constrain
the masses of the first Kaluza-Klein excitations of the Standard Model gauge
fields to lie above TeV. States with masses not much larger than
this should be observable at the LHC. However, even for first excitation masses
close to this lower bound, the second set of excitations will be too heavy to
be produced thus eliminating the possibility of realizing the cleanest
signature for KK scenarios. Previous studies of heavy and production
in this mass range at the LHC have demonstrated that very little information
can be obtained about their couplings to the conventional fermions given the
limited available statistics and imply that the LHC cannot distinguish an
ordinary from the degenerate pair of the first KK excitations of the
and . In this paper we discuss the capability of lepton colliders
with center of mass energies significantly below the excitation mass to resolve
this ambiguity. In addition, we examine how direct measurements obtained on and
near the top of the first excitation peak at lepton colliders can confirm these

Large Extra Dimensions and Decaying KK Recurrences
We suggest the possibility that in ADD type brane-world scenarios, the higher
KK excitations of the graviton may decay to lower ones owing to a breakdown of
the conservation of extra dimensional ``momenta'' and study its implications
for astrophysics and cosmology. We give an explicit realization of this idea
with a bulk scalar field , whose nonzero KK modes acquire vacuum
expectation values. This scenario helps to avoid constraints on large extra
dimensions that come from gamma ray flux bounds in the direction of nearby
supernovae as well as those coming from diffuse cosmological gamma ray
background. It also relaxes the very stringent limits on reheat temperature of

Impact of abstinence and of reducing illicit drug use without abstinence on human immunodeficiency virus viral load
Background. Substance use is common among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) and a barrier to achieving viral suppression. Among PLWH who report illicit drug use, we evaluated associations between HIV viral load (VL) and reduced use of illicit opioids, methamphetamine/crystal, cocaine/crack, and marijuana, regardless of whether or not abstinence was achieved. Methods. This was a longitudinal cohort study of PLWH from 7 HIV clinics or 4 clinical studies. We used joint longitudinal and survival models to examine the impact of decreasing drug use and of abstinence for each drug on viral suppression. We repeated analyses using linear mixed models to examine associations between change in frequency of drug use and VL. Results. The number of PLWH who were using each drug at baseline ranged from n = 568 (illicit opioids) to n = 4272 (marijuana). Abstinence was associated with higher odds of viral suppression (odds ratio [OR], 1.4-2.2) and lower relative VL (ranging from 21% to 42% by drug) for all 4 drug categories. Reducing frequency of illicit opioid or methamphetamine/crystal use without abstinence was associated with VL suppression (OR, 2.2, 1.6, respectively). Reducing frequency of illicit opioid or methamphetamine/crystal use without abstinence was associated with lower relative VL (47%, 38%, respectively). Conclusions. Abstinence was associated with viral suppression. In addition, reducing use of illicit opioids or methamphetamine/crystal, even without abstinence, was also associated with viral suppression. Our findings highlight the impact of reducing substance use, even when abstinence is not achieved, and the potential benefits of medications, behavioral interventions, and harm-reduction interventions
The Physics of Star Cluster Formation and Evolution

Bulk kinetic energy is transformed to turbulence with stars forming from cores fed by filaments. In the most compact regions, stellar feedback is least effective in removing the gas and stars may form very efficiently. These are also the regions where, in high-mass clusters, ejecta from some kind of high-mass stars are effectively captured during the formation phase of some of the low mass stars and effectively channeled into the latter to form multiple populations. Star formation epochs in star clusters are generally set by gas flows that determine the abundance of gas in the cluster. We argue that there is likely only one star formation epoch after which clusters remain essentially clear of gas by cluster winds. Collisional dynamics is important in this phase leading to core collapse, expansion and eventual dispersion of every cluster. We review recent developments in the field with a focus on theoretical work.Peer reviewe
Non-binding sequential exchange between discounting agents
When exchange is sequential, and no binding agreements can be written, the agent acting first is exposed to the possibility that even if he honors the agreement his trading partner might not. Repeated interaction of this nature is modeled. Exchange will successfully occur when there are ample gains from trade for the second agent, implying that the first agent may be better off with less bargaining power. Thus, the first agent may want to bargain at less than his full ability in order to ensure that an otherwise unsuccessful transaction will successfully occur. Additionally, if the first agent can facilitate exchange by hiring an escrow service, he will do so when his bargaining advantage is sufficiently large.
