Malaysian and Indonesian Learners: They Are Judges of How They Learn English Most Effectively in and Out of Classrooms
The position of English is that of a Second Language in Malaysia and a Foreign Language in Indonesia. But the objective is the same that is to enable the learners to communicate effectively and efficiently in social and professional situations. Learners' beliefs and learners' strategies are also part of the learning processes. Strategies are ways of managing the complex information that the learners are receiving about the target language. This study aims to find out (i) the learners' beliefs on the importance of English (ii) what the learners will do (strategies) to manage their own learning. 100 respondents participated in the study. They responded to open ended questions. The results show that there are similarities and differences in the ways the Malaysian and Indonesian learners perceived the importance of English. They also have similarities and differences in their strategies to manage their own learning to achieve their goals. As a conclusion, even though the two countries adopted different language policy, the learners of English as a Second and Foreign Language have their own enthusiasms and they make judgements about how to learn the language effectively and they have the awareness of what language learning is like
Survivability of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in satar and otak-otak, Malaysian fish-based street food
Street food is popular in Asia due to its availability, low price and good taste. The safety of street food has been always questionable due to its poor handling which probably leads to microbial contamination. The objective of this study was to determine the surviving quantities of V. parahaemolyticus under various conditions in street-vended food, namely satar and otak-otak after anticipated cross-contamination to support policy and regulatory documents. The satar and otak-otak were prepared from minced and unminced fish flesh, respectively, together with other ingredients. Each satar and otak-otak were prepared with 0, 0.5, 1.5 and 3% of sodium chloride (NaCl), respectively. V. parahaemolyticus inoculum at approximately 8.66 log CFU/ml were inoculated into the samples and incubated for up to 6 h. Samples were taken at 0, 1, 3 and 6 h for enumeration of V. parahaemolyticus using spread plate method on Thiosulphate Citrate Bile Salts Sucrose (TCBS) agar. For control samples, V. parahaemolyticus was not immediately inactivated in distilled water even though significant better survivability was observed in Phosphate Buffer Saline (PBS). The numbers of V. parahaemolyticus was found to decrease by varying amounts based on the salt content and duration of holding. However, significant amounts survived to indicate potential risk
A review of Smart Contract Blockchain Based on Multi-Criteria Analysis: Challenges and Motivations
A smart contract is a digital program of transaction protocol (rules of
contract) based on the consensus architecture of blockchain. Smart contracts
with Blockchain are modern technologies that have gained enormous attention in
scientific and practical applications. A smart contract is the central aspect
of a blockchain that facilitates blockchain as a platform outside the
cryptocurrency spectrum. The development of blockchain technology, with a focus
on smart contracts, has advanced significantly in recent years. However
research on the smart contract idea has weaknesses in the implementation
sectors based on a decentralized network that shares an identical state. This
paper extensively reviews smart contracts based on multi criteria analysis
challenges and motivations. Therefore, implementing blockchain in
multi-criteria research is required to increase the efficiency of interaction
between users via supporting information exchange with high trust. Implementing
blockchain in the multi-criteria analysis is necessary to increase the
efficiency of interaction between users via supporting information exchange and
with high confidence, detecting malfunctioning, helping users with performance
issues, reaching a consensus, deploying distributed solutions and allocating
plans, tasks and joint missions. The smart contract with decision-making
performance, planning and execution improves the implementation based on
efficiency, sustainability and management.
Furthermore the uncertainty and supply chain performance lead to improved
users confidence in offering new solutions in exchange for problems in smart

A Large Catalog of Homogeneous Ultra-Violet/Optical GRB Afterglows: Temporal and Spectral Evolution
We present the second Swift Ultra-Violet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) gamma-ray
burst (GRB) afterglow catalog, greatly expanding on the first Swift UVOT GRB
afterglow catalog. The second catalog is constructed from a database containing
over 120,000 independent UVOT observations of 538 GRBs first detected by Swift,
the High Energy Transient Explorer 2 (HETE2), the INTErnational Gamma-Ray
Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), the Interplanetary Network (IPN), Fermi,
and Astro-rivelatore Gamma a Immagini Leggero (AGILE). The catalog covers GRBs
discovered from 2005 Jan 17 to 2010 Dec 25. Using photometric information in
three UV bands, three optical bands, and a `white' or open filter, the data are
optimally co-added to maximize the number of detections and normalized to one
band to provide a detailed light curve. The catalog provides positional,
temporal, and photometric information for each burst, as well as Swift Burst
Alert Telescope (BAT) and X-Ray Telescope (XRT) GRB parameters. Temporal slopes
are provided for each UVOT filter. The temporal slope per filter of almost half
the GRBs are fit with a single power-law, but one to three breaks are required
in the remaining bursts. Morphological comparisons with the X-ray reveal that
approximately 75% of the UVOT light curves are similar to one of the four
morphologies identified by Evans et al. (2009). The remaining approximately 25%
have a newly identified morphology. For many bursts, redshift and extinction
corrected UV/optical spectral slopes are also provided at 2000, 20,000, and

Synthesized grain size distribution in the interstellar medium
We examine a synthetic way of constructing the grain size distribution in the
interstellar medium (ISM). First we formulate a synthetic grain size
distribution composed of three grain size distributions processed with the
following mechanisms that govern the grain size distribution in the Milky Way:
(i) grain growth by accretion and coagulation in dense clouds, (ii) supernova
shock destruction by sputtering in diffuse ISM, and (iii) shattering driven by
turbulence in diffuse ISM. Then, we examine if the observational grain size
distribution in the Milky Way (called MRN) is successfully synthesized or not.
We find that the three components actually synthesize the MRN grain size
distribution in the sense that the deficiency of small grains by (i) and (ii)
is compensated by the production of small grains by (iii). The fraction of each
{contribution} to the total grain processing of (i), (ii), and (iii) (i.e., the
relative importance of the three {contributions} to all grain processing
mechanisms) is 30-50%, 20-40%, and 10-40%, respectively. We also show that the
Milky Way extinction curve is reproduced with the synthetic grain size

Numerical Evaluation of Fatigue Crack Growth of Structural Steels Using Energy Release Rate with VCCT
This research presents the numerical evaluation of fatigue crack growth of structural steels S355 and S960 based on Paris’ law parameters (C and m) that are experimentally determined with a single edge notched tension (SENT) specimen using optical and crack gauge measurements on an electromotive resonance machine at constant amplitude load. The sustainable technique is replacing destructive, time-consuming and expensive approaches in structural integrity. The crack propagation is modelled using the 3D finite element method (FEM) with adaptive remeshing of tetrahedral elements along with the crack initiator elements provided in simulation software for crack propagation based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). The stress intensity is computed based on the evaluation of energy release rates according to Irwin’s crack closure integral with applied cyclic load of 62.5 MPa, 100 MPa and 150 MPa and stress ratios of R = 0 and 0.1. In order to achieve optimized mesh size towards load cycle and computational time, mesh and re-mesh sensitivity analysis is conducted. The results indicate that the virtual crack closure technique VCCT-based 3D FEM shows acceptable agreement compared to the experimental investigation with the percentage error up to 7.9% for S355 and 12.8% for S960 structural steel
SMART: Unique splitting-while-merging framework for gene clustering

The clustering performance degrades significantly unless parameters are properly set, and yet, it is difficult to set these parameters a priori. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a unique splitting-while-merging clustering framework, named “splitting merging awareness tactics” (SMART), which does not require any a priori knowledge of either the number of clusters or even the possible range of this number. Unlike existing self-splitting algorithms, which over-cluster the dataset to a large number of clusters and then merge some similar clusters, our framework has the ability to split and merge clusters automatically during the process and produces the the most reliable clustering results, by intrinsically integrating many clustering techniques and tasks. The SMART framework is implemented with two distinct clustering paradigms in two algorithms: competitive learning and finite mixture model. Nevertheless, within the proposed SMART framework, many other algorithms can be derived for different clustering paradigms. The minimum message length algorithm is integrated into the framework as the clustering selection criterion. The usefulness of the SMART framework and its algorithms is tested in demonstration datasets and simulated gene expression datasets. Moreover, two real microarray gene expression datasets are studied using this approach. Based on the performance of many metrics, all numerical results show that SMART is superior to compared existing self-splitting algorithms and traditional algorithms. Three main properties of the proposed SMART framework are summarized as: (1) needing no parameters dependent on the respective dataset or a priori knowledge about the datasets, (2) extendible to many different applications, (3) offering superior performance compared with counterpart algorithms.National Institute for Health Researc
Quantum key distribution in terms of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state: multi-key generation
In this paper, we develop a quantum key distribution protocol based on the
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states (GHZs). The particles are exchanged among
the users in blocks through two steps. In this protocol, for three-particle
GHZs three keys can be simultaneously generated. The advantage of this is that
the users can select the most suitable key for communication. The protocol can
be generalized to users to provide keys. The protocol has two levels
for checking the eavesdroppers. Moreover, we discuss the security of the

Alzheimer\u27s, angiotensin IV and an aminopeptidase
The angiotensin AT4 receptor was originally defined as the specific, high affinity binding site for the hexapeptide angiotensin IV (Ang IV). Subsequently, the peptide LVV-hemorphin 7 was also demonstrated to be a bioactive ligand of the AT4 receptor. Central administration of Ang IV or LVV-hemorphin 7 (LVV-H7) markedly enhances learning and memory in normal rodents and reverse memory deficits observed in animal models of amnesia. The high affinity binding site has a broad distribution in the brain including areas such as the hippocmapus that are involved in memory processing. The high affinity Ang IV binding site (AT4 receptor) has been identified as the transmembrane enzyme, insulin-regulated membrane aminopeptidase (IRAP). Insulin-regulated aminopeptidase is a type II integral membrane spanning protein belonging to the M1 family of aminopeptidases and in insulin-responsive cells colocalizes with GLUT4 in specific intra-cellular vesicles. Both Ang IV and LVV-H7 are competitive inhibitors of IRAP catalytic activity and are not substrates of the enzyme.<br /
FPGA technology in process tomography
The aims of this paper are to provide a review of the process tomography applications employing field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) and to understand current FPGA related researches, in order to seek for the possibility to applied FPGA technology in an ultrasonic process tomography system. FPGA allows users to implement complete systems on a programmable chip, meanwhile, five main benefits of applying the FPGA technology are performance, time to market, cost, reliability, and long-term maintenance. These advantages definitely could help in the revolution of process tomography, especially for ultrasonic process tomography and electrical process tomography. Future work is focused on the ultrasonic process tomography for chemical process column investigation using FPGA for the aspects of low cost, high speed and reconstructed image quality
