Ladder exponentiation for generic large symmetric representation Wilson loops
A recent proposal was made for a large representation rank limit for which
the expectation values of N = 4 super Yang-Mills Wilson loops are given by the
exponential of the 1-loop result. We verify the validity of this exponentiation
in the strong coupling limit using the holographic D3-brane description for
straight Wilson loops following an arbitrary internal space trajectory.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
Phase Diagram of Planar Matrix Quantum Mechanics, Tensor, and Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Models
We compute the phase diagram of a
invariant fermionic planar matrix quantum mechanics [equivalently tensor or
complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models] in the new large limit, dominated
by melonic graphs. The Schwinger-Dyson equations can have two solutions
describing either a high entropy, SYK black-hole-like phase, or a low entropy
one with trivial IR behavior. In the strongly coupled region of the
mass-temperature plane, there is a line of first order phase transitions
between the high and low entropy phases. This line terminates at a new critical
point which we study numerically in detail. The critical exponents are nonmean
field and differ on the two sides of the transition. We also study purely
bosonic unstable and stable melonic models. The former has a line of Kazakov
critical points beyond which the Schwinger-Dyson equations do not have a
consistent solution. Moreover, in both models the would-be SYK-like solution of
the IR limit of the equations does not exist in the full theory.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, minor changes in v
inconsistentes
The quantification of damages caused by an infringement of Art. 101 or Art. 102 TFEU: is arbitration really a short cut?
The quantification of damages for a breach of Article 101 or 102 TFEU is complex, demanding and time consuming. Over the last few years, it has become one of the main issues in policy discussions within the European Union (EU). In particular, the European Commission (EC) investigated and revealed that the procedure for the quantification of
damages caused by a breach of EU antitrust laws not only requires expert economic and econometric skills, but varies from Member State to Member State. As a consequence of
this disparity, the EC issued new guidelines to render uniform the procedure for the quantification of damages caused by antitrust breaches across Member States and adopted new regulations to encourage private actions for damages. The latter aim at encouraging the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods, most notably arbitration, to resolve antitrust disputes as they provide a more expedient process and a fairer solution than a national court judgment. Furthermore, arbitration may be compared to a noncooperative or Bayesian game. Indeed, an antitrust dispute is characterised by asymmetric information. Hence, the parties thereto act strategically in order to push the arbitrator to issue a settlement in their favour. As a result, both parties are incentivized to make extreme
offers, the effect of which is to slow down the arbitration proceedings and lead the arbitrator to reach a settlement which does not correctly quantify the damages suffered.
Thus, we require a system that has the double effect of encouraging the parties to avoid adopting extreme positions and converge in their offers. The amended final offer
arbitration (AFOA) seems to comply with both these equirements. Nevertheless, the fact that it involves a punishment could prove counter-productive by discouraging the parties from actually selecting arbitration as an ADR method to resolve their disputes. Thus, to be an effective private action for damages caused by an infringement of Article 101 or 102 TFEU, arbitration must be structured in a manner that enables the arbitrator to reach a fair
settlement, encourages the parties to converge in their offers and incentivises the parties to actually select such arbitration mechanism to resolve their disputes
Pulmonary hypertension and cardiac function in congenital diaphragmatic hernia: relationship to disease severity and outcomes
Abstract
Objective
To assess patterns of postnatal biventricular function and their relationship to
prenatal and postnatal markers of disease severity in infants with congenital
diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). To investigate clusters of micro RNA as 17-92
expressed in pulmonary hypoplasia in patients with CDH.
Study Design
Observational case-control study of cardiac function in infants with CDH in the first
5 days of life. Systolic and diastolic function in the right (RV) and left (LV) ventricles
were assessed using speckle tracking-derived global strain and tissue Doppler
imaging of myocardial velocities. In another cohort of CDH, Bronchoalveolar
aspiration (BAL) fluid was obtained and metabolomic analysis was run for micro
RNA 17-92 cluster. Specifically miR17, miR18a, miR19a, miR19b, miR20a, miR92
were analyzed. Correlation between cardiac function and prenatal
observed:expected total fetal lung volume (TFLV), oxygenation index (OI),
duration of intubation and length of stay were assessed.
Results
All measures of systolic and diastolic function were significantly reduced in the
CDH group (n=25) compared to controls (n=20) at <48 hours, and improved by 72-
96 hours. LV global systolic longitudinal strain (LV GLS) correlated with prenatal
TFLV (r2 0.32, p 0.03), OI (r2 0.35, P<0.001), duration of intubation (r2 0.24, p 0.04),
and length of stay (r2 0.4, p 0.006). LV GLS at <48 hours was significantly lower in
6
CDH patients who did not survive and/or required ECMO compared to those who
did not; -11.5 (5.3) % vs -16.9 (5.3) %, p 0.02. For the metabolomic analysis we
found miR17, miE18a, miR19b, miR20a were found significantly higher in CDH
(p<0.05) and miR19a lower (p<0.05). No significant correlation was found between
miR92 expression and clinical outcomes.
Conclusions
Right and left ventricular function are impaired in the transitional period in infants
with CDH. Early left ventricular systolic function correlates with prenatal and
postnatal markers of clinical disease severity and may be an important
determinant of disease severity and therapeutic target in CDH. These findings
support regular assessment of cardiac function in CDH and investigational trials of
targeted cardiovascular therapies. miR 17-92 cluster may represent a potential
hallmark of PH in CDH however from our result doesn’t predict disease severity
Demonstration that a Case of Human Alveolar Echinococcosis in Minnesota in 1977 was Caused by the N2 Strain.
Alveolar echinococcosis is the most serious helminthic zoonosis of the northern hemisphere affecting
humans. The causative agent, Echinococcus multilocularis, occurs in geographically distinct strains that can be distinguished
based on sequence variations of mitochondrial genes and nuclear microsatellite targets. This report finds that the human
case of Alveolar echinococcosis occurring in Minnesota in 1977 was caused by the N2 haplotype described previously;
the N2 haplotype is distinct from European and Asian isolates of the parasite and is restricted to the central region of
North America
Applying CHC Models to Reasoning in Fictions
In figuring out the complete content of a fictional story, all kinds of consequences are drawn from the explicitly given material. It may seem natural to assume a closure deductive principle for those consequences. Notwithstanding, the classical closure principle has notorious problems because of the possibility of inconsistencies. This paper aims to explore an alternative approach to reasoning with the content of fictional works, based on the application of a mathematical model for conjectures, hypotheses and consequences (abbr. CHCs); extensively developed during the last years by Enric Trillas and some collaborators, with which deduction in this setting becomes more comprehensive.Fil: Urtubey, Luis.
Phases Of Melonic Quantum Mechanics
We explore in detail the properties of two melonic quantum mechanical
theories which can be formulated either as fermionic matrix quantum mechanics
in the new large limit, or as disordered models. Both models have a mass
parameter and the transition from the perturbative large region to the
strongly coupled "black-hole" small region is associated with several
interesting phenomena. One model, with symmetry and equivalent
to complex SYK, has a line of first-order phase transitions terminating, for a
strictly positive temperature, at a critical point having non-trivial,
non-mean-field critical exponents for standard thermodynamical quantities.
Quasi-normal frequencies, as well as Lyapunov exponents associated with
out-of-time-ordered four-point functions, are also singular at the critical
point, leading to interesting new critical exponents. The other model, with
reduced symmetry, has a quantum critical point at strictly zero
temperature and positive critical mass . For , it flows to a new
gapless IR fixed point, for which the standard scale invariance is
spontaneously broken by the appearance of distinct scaling dimensions
and for the Euclidean two-point function when
and respectively. We provide
several detailed and pedagogical derivations, including rigorous proofs or
simplified arguments for some results that were already known in the
literature.Comment: 135 pages, 50 figures, 2 tables. Minor corrections and updated list
