Auditory Processing in Children with Specific Language Impairments: Are there Deficits in Frequency Discrimination, Temporal Auditory Processing or General Auditory Processing?

    Get PDF
Background/Aims: Specific language impairment (SLI) is believed to be associated with nonverbal auditory (NVA) deficits. It remains unclear, however, whether children with SLI show deficits in auditory time processing, time processing in general, frequency discrimination (FD), or NVA processing in general. Patients and Methods: Twenty-seven children (aged 8-11) with SLI and 27 control children (CG), matched for age and gender, were retrospectively compared with regard to their performance on five NVA skills in terms of just noticeable differences (JND) and time order judgments (TOJ). JND was used for FD, intensity discrimination, and gap detection, while TOJ was used for FD and clicks. Results: Children with SLI performed significantly worse than the CG only on the FD tasks (JND and TOJ). The other nonverbal tasks showed no significant intergroup differences. Additionally, moderate associations were found between the FD tasks and phonological skills, as well as between FD tasks and language scores. Conclusion: Children with SLI appear to have restricted FD skills compared to controls, but there was no evidence for a common NVA deficit or reduced temporal auditory abilities. Detector Characterization for Advanced LIGO

The first observing run of Advanced LIGO spanned 4 months, from September 12, 2015 to January 19, 2016, during which gravitational waves were directly detected from two binary black hole systems, namely GW150914 and GW151226. Confident detection of gravitational waves requires an understanding of instrumental noise transients and artifacts that can reduce the sensitivity of a search for gravitational waves. Studies of the quality of the detector data yield insights into the cause of instrumental artifacts and data quality vetoes specific to a search are produced to mitigate the effects of problematic data. This dissertation provides an overview of the methods used to characterize noise in the LIGO interferometers and provides examples of successful removal of transient noise. The data set used in the first observing run is validated. Further, the systematic removal of noisy data from analysis time is shown to improve the sensitivity of searches for compact binary coalescences. The output of the PyCBC pipeline is used as a metric for improvement. The first direct detection of gravitational waves, GW150914, was a loud enough signal that removing data with excess noise did not improve its significance. However, the removal of data with excess noise decreased the false alarm rate of GW151226 by a factor of 567, from 1 in 320 years (3.9 σ) to 1 in 183000 years (\u3e 5.3 σ)

Incorporation in vivo of 14C-Labelled Amino Acids into the Proteins of Mitochondrial Ribosomes from Neurospora crassa Sensitive to Cycloheximide and Insensitive to Chloramphenicol

Radioactive amino acids were incorporated in vivo into Neurospora crassa cells, and the mitochondrial ribosomes were isolated. The incorporation of radioactivity into the proteins of these ribosomes was inhibited by cycloheximide, but not by chloramphenicol. It is therefore concluded that these proteins are synthesized on the cycloheximide sensitive and chloramphenicol insensitive cytoplasmic ribosomes

Observing Gravitational Waves with a Single Detector

A major challenge of any search for gravitational waves is to distinguish true astrophysical signals from those of terrestrial origin. Gravitational-wave experiments therefore make use of multiple detectors, considering only those signals which appear in coincidence in two or more instruments. It is unclear, however, how to interpret loud gravitational-wave candidates observed when only one detector is operational. In this paper, we demonstrate that the observed rate of binary black hole mergers can be leveraged in order to make confident detections of gravitational-wave signals with one detector alone. We quantify detection confidences in terms of the probability P(S)P(S) that a signal candidate is of astrophysical origin. We find that, at current levels of instrumental sensitivity, loud signal candidates observed with a single Advanced LIGO detector can be assigned P(S)0.4P(S)\gtrsim0.4. In the future, Advanced LIGO may be able to observe single-detector events with confidences exceeding P(S)90%P(S)\sim90\%.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; published in CQG; minor updates to match published versio

Improving the Sensitivity of Advanced LIGO Using Noise Subtraction

This paper presents an adaptable, parallelizable method for subtracting linearly coupled noise from Advanced LIGO data. We explain the features developed to ensure that the process is robust enough to handle the variability present in Advanced LIGO data. In this work, we target subtraction of noise due to beam jitter, detector calibration lines, and mains power lines. We demonstrate noise subtraction over the entirety of the second observing run, resulting in increases in sensitivity comparable to those reported in previous targeted efforts. Over the course of the second observing run, we see a 30% increase in Advanced LIGO sensitivity to gravitational waves from a broad range of compact binary systems. We expect the use of this method to result in a higher rate of detected gravitational-wave signals in Advanced LIGO data.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure

Policy Point – Counterpoint: Mandating Law Enforcement to Receive Annual Certification in Cultural Diversity through Critical Thinking

Multiculturalism is rapidly growing in American communities. A law enforcement officer’s oath increasingly calls for the successful and effectual interaction with citizens from diverse backgrounds. Diversity is currently taught substantively in the academies. However, the academies’ diversity training can be enhanced with the application of critical thinking skills. Mandatory annual certification training in critical thinking can assist law enforcement officers to find multiple solutions to the problems they encounter on a routine basis and can lend to de-escalation as well as community and officer safety
