    Electrodynamics of Amorphous Media at Low Temperatures

    Amorphous solids exhibit intrinsic, local structural transitions, that give rise to the well known quantum-mechanical two-level systems at low temperatures. We explain the microscopic origin of the electric dipole moment of these two-level systems: The dipole emerges as a result of polarization fluctuations between near degenerate local configurations, which have nearly frozen in at the glass transition. An estimate of the dipole's magnitude, based on the random first order transition theory, is obtained and is found to be consistent with experiment. The interaction between the dipoles is estimated and is shown to contribute significantly to the Gr\"{u}neisen parameter anomaly in low TT glasses. In completely amorphous media, the dipole moments are expected to be modest in size despite their collective origin. In partially crystalline materials, however, very large dipoles may arise, possibly explaining the findings of Bauer and Kador, J. Chem.     Correcting the z~8 Galaxy Luminosity Function for Gravitational Lensing Magnification Bias

    We present a Bayesian framework to account for the magnification bias from both strong and weak gravitational lensing in estimates of high-redshift galaxy luminosity functions. We illustrate our method by estimating the z8z\sim8 UV luminosity function using a sample of 97 Y-band dropouts (Lyman break galaxies) found in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) survey and from the literature. We find the luminosity function is well described by a Schechter function with characteristic magnitude of M=19.850.35+0.30M^\star = -19.85^{+0.30}_{-0.35}, faint-end slope of α=1.720.29+0.30\alpha = -1.72^{+0.30}_{-0.29}, and number density of log10Ψ[Mpc3]=3.000.31+0.23\log_{10} \Psi^\star [\textrm{Mpc}^{-3}] = -3.00^{+0.23}_{-0.31}. These parameters are consistent within the uncertainties with those inferred from the same sample without accounting for the magnification bias, demonstrating that the effect is small for current surveys at z8z\sim8, and cannot account for the apparent overdensity of bright galaxies compared to a Schechter function found recently by Bowler et al. (2014a,b) and Finkelstein et al. (2014). We estimate that the probability of finding a strongly lensed z8z\sim8 source in our sample is in the range 315%\sim 3-15 \% depending on limiting magnitude. We identify one strongly-lensed candidate and three cases of intermediate lensing in BoRG (estimated magnification μ>1.4\mu>1.4) in addition to the previously known candidate group-scale strong lens. Using a range of theoretical luminosity functions we conclude that magnification bias will dominate wide field surveys -- such as those planned for the Euclid and WFIRST missions -- especially at z>10z>10. Magnification bias will need to be accounted for in order to derive accurate estimates of high-redshift luminosity functions in these surveys and to distinguish between galaxy formation models.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 20 pages, 13 figure

    Testicular steroid sulfatase: Substrate specificity and inhibition

    Kinetic studies of the cleavage of dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (1) and androstenediol-3-sulfate by a particulate enzyme preparation from a rat testicular microsomal fraction gave Km values of 2.04 x 10-6M for DHA-S and 0.935 x 10-6M for androstenediol-3-sulfate with identical Vmax values. Inhibition studies with equimolar concentrations of substrate and inhibitor demonstrated that 5[alpha]-androstane-3[beta],17[beta]-diol was the most potent inhibitor among fifteen C-19 and C-18 unconjugated steroids investigated. Substitution of: 1) a [Delta]4 or [Delta]5 bond or phenolic A ring for a saturated A ring, 2) 17[alpha]-hydroxyl group for a 17[beta]-hydroxyl group, or 3) a 3[alpha]-hydroxyl group for a 3[beta]-hydroxyl group, markedly decreased the inhibitory effect of the steroid. Ki values of 1.7 x 10-6 M, 3.3 x 10-6M and 11.8 x 10-6M were found with 5[alpha]-androstane-3[beta], 17[beta]-diol, 5[alpha]-androstane-3[alpha], 17[beta]-diol and testosterone, respectively.     Measurement of Optical Response of a Detuned Resonant Sideband Extraction Interferometer

    We report on the optical response of a suspended-mass detuned resonant sideband extraction (RSE) interferometer with power recycling. The purpose of the detuned RSE configuration is to manipulate and optimize the optical response of the interferometer to differential displacements (induced by gravitational waves) as a function of frequency, independently of other parameters of the interferometer. The design of our interferometer results in an optical gain with two peaks: an RSE optical resonance at around 4 kHz and a radiation pressure induced optical spring at around 41 Hz. We have developed a reliable procedure for acquiring lock and establishing the desired optical configuration. In this configuration, we have measured the optical response to differential displacement and found good agreement with predictions at both resonances and all other relevant frequencies. These results build confidence in both the theory and practical implementation of the more complex optical configuration being planned for Advanced LIGO.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, for submission to Phys Rev Letter

    A One-sided, Highly Relativistic Jet from Cygnus X-3

    Very Long Baseline Array images of the X-ray binary, Cygnus X-3, were obtained 2, 4 and 7 days after the peak of a 10 Jy flare on 4 February 1997. The first two images show a curved one-sided jet, the third a scatter-broadened disc, presumably at the position of the core. The jet curvature changes from the first to the second epoch, which strongly suggests a precessing jet. The ratio of the flux density in the approaching to that in the (undetected) receding jet is > 330; if this asymmetry is due to Doppler boosting, the implied jet speed is > 0.81c. Precessing jet model fits, together with the assumptions that the jet is intrinsically symmetric and was ejected during or after the major flare, yield the following constraints: the jet inclination to the line of sight must be < 14 degrees; the cone opening angle must be < 12 degrees; and the precession period must be > 60 days.Comment: 12 pages 7 figures, accepted by Ap

    Emotional Distress, Alcohol Use, and Bidirectional Partner Violence Among Lesbian Women

    This study examined the relationship between emotional distress (defined as depression, brooding, and negative affect), alcohol outcomes, and bidirectional intimate partner violence among lesbian women. Results lend support to the self-medication hypothesis, which predicts that lesbian women who experience more emotional distress are more likely to drink to cope, and in turn report more alcohol use, problem drinking, and alcohol-related problems. These alcohol outcomes were, in turn, associated with bidirectional partner violence (BPV). These results offer preliminary evidence that, similar to findings for heterosexual women, emotional distress, alcohol use, and particularly, alcohol-related problems are risk factors for BPV among lesbian women
