Generarized Cubic Model for BaTiO-like Ferroelectric Substance
We propose an order-disorder type microscopic model for BaTiO-like
Ferroelectric Substance. Our model has three phase transitions and four phases.
The symmetry and directions of the polarizations of the ordered phases agree
with the experimental results of BaTiO. The intermediate phases in our
model are known as an incompletely ordered phase, which appears in a
generalized clock model.Comment: 6 pages, 4figure
Fractional-Period Excitations in Continuum Periodic Systems
We investigate the generation of fractional-period states in continuum
periodic systems. As an example, we consider a Bose-Einstein condensate
confined in an optical-lattice potential. We show that when the potential is
turned on non-adiabatically, the system explores a number of transient states
whose periodicity is a fraction of that of the lattice. We illustrate the
origin of fractional-period states analytically by treating them as resonant
states of a parametrically forced Duffing oscillator and discuss their
transient nature and potential observability.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures (some with multiple parts); revised version:

Generation of ultrabright tunable polarization entanglement without spatial, spectral, or temporal constraints
The need for spatial and spectral filtering in the generation of polarization
entanglement is eliminated by combining two coherently-driven type-II
spontaneous parametric downconverters. The resulting ultrabright source emits
photon pairs that are polarization entangled over the entire spatial cone and
spectrum of emission. We detect a flux of 12 000 polarization-entangled
pairs/s per mW of pump power at 90% quantum-interference visibility, and the
source can be temperature tuned for 5 nm around frequency degeneracy. The
output state is actively controlled by precisely adjusting the relative phase
of the two coherent pumps.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Cystatins as calpain inhibitors: Engineered chicken cystatin- and stefin B-kininogen domain 2 hybrids support a cystatin-like mode of interaction with the catalytic subunit of μ-calpain
Within the cystatin superfamily, only kininogen domain 2 (KD2) is able to inhibit μ- and m-calpain. In an attempt to elucidate the structural requirements of cystatins for calpain inhibition, we constructed recombinant hybrids of human stefin B (an intracellular family 1 cystatin) with KD2 and Delta L110 deletion mutants of chicken cystatin-KD2 hybrids. Substitution of the N-terminal contact region of stefin B by the corresponding KD2 sequence resulted in a calpain inhibitor of K-i = 188 nM. Deletion of L110, which forms a beta -bulge in family 1 and 2 cystatins but is lacking in KD2, improved inhibition of mu -calpain 4- to 8-fold. All engineered cystatins were temporary inhibitors of calpain due to slow substrate-like cleavage of a single peptide bond corresponding to Gly9-Ala10 in chicken cystatin. Biomolecular interaction analysis revealed that, unlike calpastatin, the cystatin-type inhibitors do not bind to the calmodulin-like domain of the small subunit of calpain, and their interaction with the mu -calpain heterodimer is completely prevented by a synthetic peptide comprising subdomain B of calpastatin domain 1. Based on these results we propose that (i) cystatin-type calpain inhibitors interact with the active site of the catalytic domain of calpain in a similar cystatin-like mode as with papain and (ii) the potential for calpain inhibition is due to specific subsites within the papain-binding regions of the general cystatin fold
Vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectra of nitrile ices for their identification on Pluto
Icy bodies, such as Pluto, are known to harbor simple and complex molecules. The recent New Horizons flyby of Pluto has revealed a complex surface composed of bright and dark ice surfaces, indicating a rich chemistry based on nitrogen (N2), methane (CH4), and carbon monoxide (CO). Nitrile (CN) containing molecules such as acetonitrile (CH3CN), propionitrile (CH3CH2CN), butyronitrile (CH3CH2CH2CN), and isobutyronitrile ((CH3)2CHCN) are some of the nitrile molecules that are known to be synthesized by radiative processing of such simple ices. Through the provision of a spectral atlas for such compounds we propose that such nitriles may be identified from the ALICE payload on board New Horizons</i
SB9: The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits
The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits
(http://sb9.astro.ulb.ac.be) continues the series of compilations of
spectroscopic orbits carried out over the past 35 years by Batten and
collaborators. As of 2004 May 1st, the new Catalogue holds orbits for 2,386
systems. Some essential differences between this catalogue and its predecessors
are outlined and three straightforward applications are presented: (1)
Completeness assessment: period distribution of SB1s and SB2s; (2) Shortest
periods across the H-R diagram; (3) Period-eccentricity relation.Comment: Accepte for publication in A&A, 6 pages, 6 figure
Coherent radiation of an ultra-relativistic charged particle channeled in a periodically bent crystal
We suggest a new type of the undulator radiation which is generated by an
ultra-relativistic particle channeled along a periodically bent
crystallographic plane or axis. The electromagnetic radiation arises mainly due
to the bending of the particle's trajectory, which follows the shape of the
channel. The parameters of this undulator, which totally define the spectrum
and the angular distribution of the radiation (both spontaneous and
stimulated), depend on the type of the crystal and the crystallographic plane
(axis), on the type of a projectile and its energy, and on the shape of the
bent channel, and, thus, can be varied significantly by varying these
characteristics.
As an example, we consider the acoustically induced radiation (AIR) which is
generated by ultra-relativistic particles channeled in a crystal which is bent
by a transverse acoustic wave. The AIR mechanism allows to make the undulator
with the main parameters varying in wide ranges, which are inaccessible in the
undulators based on the motion of particles in the periodic magnetic fields and
also in the field of the laser radiation. The intensity of AIR can be easily
made larger than the intensity of the radiation in a linear crystal and can be
varied in a wide range by varying the frequency and the amplitude of the
acoustic wave in the crystal. A possibility to generate stimulated emission of
high-energy photons (in keV - MeV region) is also discussed.Comment: published in J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 24 (1998) L45-L53,

Resonant X-Ray Scattering from URu_{2}Si_{2}
Based on a localized crystal electric field model for the U^{4+} in the
(5f)^2-configuration, we analyze the resonant x-ray scattering spectra around U
M_{IV} and M_{V} edges in URu_{2}Si_{2}, taking full Coulomb and spin-orbit
interactions into account. We consider two level schemes, a singlet model of
Santini and Amoretti and a doublet model of Ohkawa and Shimizu, and assume the
antiferroquadrupolar order and the antiferromagnetic order as candidates for
the ambient pressure phase and the high pressure phase. It is found that the
spectral shapes as a function of photon energy are independent of the assumed
level scheme, but are quite different between the antiferroquadrupole and
antiferromagnetic phases, This may be useful to determine the character of the
ordered phase.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to JPS
The Split-Algebras and Non-compact Hopf Maps
We develop a noncompact version of the Hopf maps based on the split algebras.
The split algebras consist of three species: split-complex numbers, split
quaternions, and split octonions. They correspond to three noncompact Hopf maps
that represent topological maps between hyperboloids in different dimensions
with hyperboloid bundle. We realize such noncompact Hopf maps in two ways: one
is to utilize the split-imaginary unit, and the other is to utilize the
ordinary imaginary unit. Topological structures of the hyperboloid bundles are
explored, and the canonical connections are naturally regarded as noncompact
gauge field of monopoles.Comment: 40 pages, no figures, + 8 pages, discussions and references added,

Neutron scattering in a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor with strong impurity scattering and Coulomb correlations
We calculate the spin susceptibility at and below T_c for a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave
superconductor with resonant impurity scattering and Coulomb correlations. Both
the impurity scattering and the Coulomb correlations act to maintain peaks in
the spin susceptibility, as a function of momentum, at the Brillouin zone edge.
These peaks would otherwise be suppressed by the superconducting gap. The
predicted amount of suppression of the spin susceptibility in the
superconducting state compared to the normal state is in qualitative agreement
with results from recent magnetic neutron scattering experiments on
La_{1.86}Sr_{0.14}CuO_4 for momentum values at the zone edge and along the zone
diagonal. The predicted peak widths in the superconducting state, however, are
narrower than those in the normal state, a narrowing which has not been
observed experimentally.Comment: 24 pages (12 tarred-compressed-uuencoded Postscript figures), REVTeX
