    A recent study has highlighted the importance of student perceptions of the accounting profession and the resultant self-selection process. This self-selection process may result in students self-selecting into the accounting area who are deficient in the essential qualities for success in the modern accounting profession. Warnock (1996) reports that among 1st year accounting students a still pervasive image of the accountant is that it is not particularly important to have either imagination or verbal qualities or communication or critical thinking skills and thus students who are weak in the above qualities often self-select into accounting as a major.  The purpose of this paper is to introduce into the accounting literature the results of an emerging body of research that suggests arts education can enhance or help accounting students overcome these deficiencies

    Changes in zebrafish (Danio rerio) lens crystallin content during development.

    PurposeThe roles that crystallin proteins play during lens development are not well understood. Similarities in the adult crystallin composition of mammalian and zebrafish lenses have made the latter a valuable model for examining lens function. In this study, we describe the changing zebrafish lens proteome during development to identify ontogenetic shifts in crystallin expression that may provide insights into age-specific functions.MethodsTwo-dimensional gel electrophoresis and size exclusion chromatography were used to characterize the lens crystallin content of 4.5-day to 27-month-old zebrafish. Protein spots were identified with mass spectrometry and comparisons with previously published proteomic maps, and quantified with densitometry. Constituents of size exclusion chromatography elution peaks were identified with sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.ResultsZebrafish lens crystallins were expressed in three ontogenetic patterns, with some crystallins produced at relatively constant levels throughout development, others expressed primarily before 10 weeks of age (βB1-, βA1-, and γN2-crystallins), and a third group primarily after 10 weeks (α-, βB3-, and γS-crystallins). Alpha-crystallins comprised less than 1% of total lens protein in 4.5-day lenses and increased to less than 7% in adult lenses. The developmental period between 6 weeks and 4 months contained the most dramatic shifts in lens crystallin expression.ConclusionsThese data provide the first two-dimensional gel electrophoresis maps of the developing zebrafish lens, with quantification of changing crystallin abundance and visualization of post-translational modification. Results suggest that some crystallins may play stage specific roles during lens development. The low levels of zebrafish lens α-crystallin relative to mammals may be due to the high concentrations of γ-crystallins in this aquatic lens. Similarities with mammalian crystallin expression continue to support the use of the zebrafish as a model for lens crystallin function

    Traditionally, social entities (i.e., social properties, facts, kinds, groups, institutions, and structures) have not fallen within the purview of mainstream metaphysics. In this chapter, we consider whether the exclusion of social entities from mainstream metaphysics is philosophically warranted or if it instead rests on historical accident or bias. We examine three ways one might attempt to justify excluding social metaphysics from the domain of metaphysical inquiry and argue that each fails. Thus, we conclude that social entities are not justifiably excluded from metaphysical inquiry. Finally, we ask how focusing on social entities could change the character of metaphysical inquiry. We suggest that starting from examples of social entities might lead metaphysicians to rethink the assumption that describing reality in terms of intrinsic, independent, and individualistic features is preferable to describing it in terms of relational, dependent, and non-individualistic features

    Primary Factors Influencing Green Building in Cities in the Pacific Northwest

    This article provides empirical evidence that the factors of context and social climate are the most influential for achieving green building. Using both chi-squared analysis and factor analysis findings indicate that providing the context and social climate which can reduce transaction costs influence green building. Specifically, through policies and guidelines, having the local expertise and support to make the outcomes occur are all important factors. Additionally, central cities were much more likely to engage in green building than suburban or non-metropolitan areas. This finding has implications for matters of collective action

    Bleeding Disorders in Adolescents with Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: The Queensland Statewide Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Service

    Study Objective: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is a common gynecological complaint among young women with up to 40% having experienced HMB. Bleeding disorders are increasingly being recognized in adolescents and young adults with HMB. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of bleeding disorders in adolescents with HMB, among patients who presented to the Queensland Statewide Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Service between July 2007 and July 2017. Design, Setting, Participants, Interventions, and Main Outcome Measures: The study was a retrospective review of 124 female adolescents aged 8 to 18 years with HMB who presented to the Queensland Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Service, Brisbane, Australia. The primary outcome measure was diagnosis of a bleeding disorder, with secondary outcomes including iron deficiency and/or anemia and treatment modalities. Results: Screening for bleeding disorders was performed in 77/124 (62.1%) of patients with HMB. Twenty-seven adolescents were diagnosed with a bleeding disorder, giving a prevalence of 27/124 (21.7%) in those with HMB, and 27/77 (35%) with HMB who were screened. Of these 35%, von Willebrand disease was the most common bleeding disorder, found in 14/27 (51.6%), followed by inherited platelet function disorders diagnosed in 9/27 (33.3%), thrombocytopenia (inherited or acquired) in 3/27 (11.1%), and Factor IX deficiency in 1/27 (3.7%). Iron deficiency and/or anemia was diagnosed in 53/107 (49.5%) of patients with HMB who were screened for this, and 19/27 (70.3%) of those diagnosed with a bleeding disorder. Conclusion: Adolescents with HMB who present to a tertiary pediatric and adolescent gynecology service should be screened for bleeding disorders, because of the considerably high prevalence in this at-risk population

    Green Building in the Pacific Northwest: Next Steps for an Emerging Trend

    This report provides an understanding of why green building is important to our communities, a brief look at the emergence of green building standards, research evidence on the perceived pros and cons of green building, and original research on green building in the Pacific Northwest. The original research is an analysis of perspectives voiced in conversations, focus groups and surveys with both members of the construction industry and local government on the barriers and incentives to green building in their local communities. As nearly 500 construction industry members and just over 300 local governments participated in the research, this report encompasses, perhaps for the fi rst time, one of the largest examinations of the aggregated voices of both the public and private sector on factors that aff ect green building. Green house gas emissions from commercial buildings are growing at a faster than average annual rate – 1.8% higher – than either transportation or residential emission rates. This trend alone provides strong justification to take a close look at the factors that may help change this dynamic

    The Children of the Reformation: Childhood Palaeoepidemiology in Britain, ad 1000–1700

    CHILDHOOD IS A TIME of rapid biological growth and development, and a stage of the life course during which bodies are particularly sensitive to social and environmental stressors. As a consequence, events which may impact upon a child’s care and treatment can become physically embodied within their bones and teeth. The skeletal remains of children have been neglected within archaeological discourse until recently, but they are, in fact, a particularly important demographic for understanding the impact of social processes on past population health. This research examines the prevalence of skeletal disease in children (≤16 years) in Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) between ad 1000 and 1700. Data for a total of 4,626 children from 95 sites were collated from published and unpublished skeletal reports and analysed for evidence of skeletal changes reflecting disease. A biocultural approach was adopted in which the evidence was interpreted in relation to ecological, social, economic and environmental conditions. It was observed that childhood levels of skeletal stress did increase significantly after 1540. It was noted that during the Reformation sociocultural and economic factors added to stressors in the ecology of the medieval child. The effects of the Reformation were found to be the greatest aggravator in the rise of morbidity prevalence over seven centuries. Differences in morbidity patterns between non-adult age categories indicated that a state of ‘childhood’ existed until at least eleven years of age, after which there appears to have been a gradual transition into adolescence and adulthood
