A Precision Measurement of pp Elastic Scattering Cross Sections at Intermediate Energies

    Get PDF
We have measured differential cross sections for \pp elastic scattering with internal fiber targets in the recirculating beam of the proton synchrotron COSY. Measurements were made continuously during acceleration for projectile kinetic energies between 0.23 and 2.59 GeV in the angular range 30θc.m.9030 \leq \theta_{c.m.} \leq 90 deg. Details of the apparatus and the data analysis are given and the resulting excitation functions and angular distributions presented. The precision of each data point is typically better than 4%, and a relative normalization uncertainty of only 2.5% within an excitation function has been reached. The impact on phase shift analysis as well as upper bounds on possible resonant contributions in lower partial waves are discussed.Comment: 23 pages 29 figure

Improved limits on nuebar emission from mu+ decay

We investigated mu+ decays at rest produced at the ISIS beam stop target. Lepton flavor (LF) conservation has been tested by searching for \nueb via the detection reaction p(\nueb,e+)n. No \nueb signal from LF violating mu+ decays was identified. We extract upper limits of the branching ratio for the LF violating decay mu+ -> e+ \nueb \nu compared to the Standard Model (SM) mu+ -> e+ nue numub decay: BR < 0.9(1.7)x10^{-3} (90%CL) depending on the spectral distribution of \nueb characterized by the Michel parameter rho=0.75 (0.0). These results improve earlier limits by one order of magnitude and restrict extensions of the SM in which \nueb emission from mu+ decay is allowed with considerable strength. The decay \mupdeb as source for the \nueb signal observed in the LSND experiment can be excluded.Comment: 10 pages, including 1 figure, 1 tabl

Measurements of Charged Current Reactions of νe\nu_e on 12C^{12}C

Charged Current reactions of νe\nu_e on 12C^{12}C have been studied using a μ+\mu^+ decay-at-rest νe\nu_e beam at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The cross section for the exclusive reaction 12C(νe,e)12Ng.s.^{12}C(\nu_e,e^-)^{12}N_{g.s.} was measured to be (8.9±0.3±0.9)×1042(8.9\pm0.3\pm0.9)\times10^{-42} cm2^2. The observed energy dependence of the cross section and angular distribution of the outgoing electron agree well with theoretical expectations. Measurements are also presented for inclusive transitions to 12N^{12}N excited states, 12C(νe,e)12N^{12}C(\nu_e,e^-)^{12}N^* and compared with theoretical expectations. The measured cross section, (4.3±0.4±0.6)×1042(4.3\pm0.4\pm0.6)\times10^{-42} cm2^2, is somewhat lower than previous measurements and than a continuum random phase approximation calculation. It is in better agreement with a recent shell model calculation.Comment: 34 pages, 18 figures, accepted to PRC, replaced with the accepted on

The role of ν\nu-induced reactions on lead and iron in neutrino detectors

We have calculated cross sections and branching ratios for neutrino induced reactions on ^{208}Pb and ^{56}Fe for various supernova and accelerator-relevant neutrino spectra. This was motivated by the facts that lead and iron will be used on one hand as target materials in future neutrino detectors, on the other hand have been and are still used as shielding materials in accelerator-based experiments. In particular we study the inclusive ^{56}Fe(νe,e)Fe(\nu_e,e^-)^{56}Co and ^{208}Pb(νe,e)Pb(\nu_e,e^-)^{208}Bi cross sections and calculate the neutron energy spectra following the decay of the daughter nuclei. These reactions give a potential background signal in the KARMEN and LSND experiment and are discussed as a detection scheme for supernova neutrinos in the proposed OMNIS and LAND detectors. We also study the neutron-emission following the neutrino-induced neutral-current excitation of ^{56}Fe and ^{208}Pb.Comment: 23 pages (including 7 figures

    The inclusive 56Fe(nu_e,e-)56Co cross section

We study the 56Fe(nu_e,e^-)56Co cross section for the KARMEN neutrino spectrum. The Gamow-Teller contribution to the cross section is calculated within the shell model, while the forbidden transitions are evaluated within the continuum random phase approximation. We find a total cross section of 2.73 x 10^-40 cm^2, in agreement with the data.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. Replaced due to new improved calculation

Evidence for nu_mu -> nu_e Oscillations from Pion Decay in Flight Neutrinos

    Get PDF
A search for nu_mu -> nu_e oscillations has been conducted at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility using nu_mu from pi^+ decay in flight. An excess in the number of beam-related events from the C(nu_e,e^-)X inclusive reaction is observed. The excess is too large to be explained by normal nu_e contamination in the beam at a confidence level greater than 99%. If interpreted as an oscillation signal, the observed oscillation probability of (2.6 +- 1.0 +- 0.5) x 10^{-3} is consistent with the previously reported nu_mu_bar -> nu_e_bar oscillation evidence from LSND.Comment: 70 pages (LaTeX), 32 figures (PostScript), submitted to Phys.
