Utilization of Birefringent Fiber as Sensor of Temperature Field Disturbance

    Get PDF
The paper deals with utilization of induced birefringence sensitivity to temperature field in birefringent optical fibers. The propagating optical wave and optical fibers are described by means of coherency and Jones matrices, which are decomposed into unitary matrix and spin matrices. The development of polarization caused by temperature field is interpreted on the Poincare sphere by means of MATLAB® environment. The temperature sensitivity of Panda and bow-tie fiber has been measured for circular polarization excitation. Curves of intensity fluctuation caused by the temperature dependence are presented

Magnetohydrodynamic equilibria of a cylindrical plasma with poloidal mass flow and arbitrary cross section shape

The equilibrium of a cylindrical plasma with purely poloidal mass flow and cross section of arbitrary shape is investigated within the framework of the ideal MHD theory. For the system under consideration it is shown that only incompressible flows are possible and, conscequently, the general two dimensional flow equilibrium equations reduce to a single second-order quasilinear partial differential equation for the poloidal magnetic flux function ψ\psi, in which four profile functionals of ψ\psi appear. Apart from a singularity occuring when the modulus of Mach number associated with the Alfv\'en velocity for the poloidal magnetic field is unity, this equation is always elliptic and permits the construction of several classes of analytic solutions. Specific exact equlibria for a plasma confined within a perfectly conducting circular cylindrical boundary and having i) a flat current density and ii) a peaked current density are obtained and studied.Comment: Accepted to Plasma Physics & Controlled Fusion, 14 pages, revte

On the geometry of C^3/D_27 and del Pezzo surfaces

    Get PDF
We clarify some aspects of the geometry of a resolution of the orbifold X = C3/D_27, the noncompact complex manifold underlying the brane quiver standard model recently proposed by Verlinde and Wijnholt. We explicitly realize a map between X and the total space of the canonical bundle over a degree 1 quasi del Pezzo surface, thus defining a desingularization of X. Our analysis relys essentially on the relationship existing between the normalizer group of D_27 and the Hessian group and on the study of the behaviour of the Hesse pencil of plane cubic curves under the quotient.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. Biocompatibility and erosion behavior of implants made of triglycerides and blends with cholesterol and phospholipids

Abstract Triglycerides are a promising class of material for the parenteral delivery of drugs and have become the focus of tremendous research efforts in recent years. The aim of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility of glyceroltripalmitate as well as the influence of cholesterol and distearoyl-phosphatidyl-choline (DSPC) on the erosion behavior of the lipid. For these investigations, two in vivo studies were carried out, in which cylindrical matrices of 2 mm diameter were manufactured and subcutaneously implanted in immunocompetent NMRI-mice. After excision of the implants, tissue reactions of the animals as well as changes in the weight, shape and microstructure of the implants were investigated. The triglyceride and cholesterol showed good biocompatibility, as indicated by their minimal encapsulation in connective tissue and the absence of inflammatory reactions. Increasing the levels of phospholipid in the implants, however, led to an increased inflammatory reaction. In contrast to cholesterol, which did not affect erosion, the incorporation of DSPC into the triglyceride matrices led to clearly visible signs of degradation
