Normal chemotactic activity of granulocytes obtained by filtration leucapheresis

    Get PDF
The chemotactic activity of granulocytes obtained by the Terumo Filtration Leucapheresis System (F.L.) was examined by the method of Boyden's chamber. The number of cells migrating through the Millipore filter was expressed as the chemotactic activity. The mean values were 117 for the F.L. and 122 in a control, in which cells were collected from the same donor blood using dextran sedimentation. The results suggested that the in vitro chemotactic function of granulocytes obtained by F.L. was within normal limits.</p

Two-color photoassociation spectroscopy of ytterbium atoms and the precise determinations of s-wave scattering lengths

By performing high-resolution two-color photoassociation spectroscopy, we have successfully determined the binding energies of several of the last bound states of the homonuclear dimers of six different isotopes of ytterbium. These spectroscopic data are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations based on a simple model potential, which very precisely predicts the s-wave scattering lengths of all 28 pairs of the seven stable isotopes. The s-wave scattering lengths for collision of two atoms of the same isotopic species are 13.33(18) nm for ^{168}Yb, 3.38(11) nm for ^{170}Yb, -0.15(19) nm for ^{171}Yb, -31.7(3.4) nm for ^{172}Yb, 10.55(11) nm for ^{173}Yb, 5.55(8) nm for ^{174}Yb, and -1.28(23) nm for ^{176}Yb. The coefficient of the lead term of the long-range van der Waals potential of the Yb_2 molecule is C_6=1932(30) atomic units (Eha06≈9.573×10−26(E_h a_0^6 \approx 9.573\times 10^{-26} J nm^6).Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

This is mainly concerning the abilities of providing care for elderly people. The Nordic countries and Europe is facing a growing amount of population over 65 years and older. They are demanding more efficient care and are often suffering from multiple variation of diseases in the same time the number of physicians and nurses with special education is decreasing. This has led to the need of educate nurses with more clinically demanding skills, the APN. The aim of this study was to explore the problems with elderly care of today and determine how the new role as APN can assist in improving the care. And also what kind of duties the APN would be responsible of. The method that was used was a qualitative semi structured interview study with 5 nurses as participants from the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Faroe Irelands). The material was analyzed with a thematic content analysis. Findings in the study show that elderly people has a complex situation, they often have to move from one institution to another for examination and treatment when they instead would have been able to be taken care of in their home if the competence would have been high enough. Colleague nurses and other employees would appreciate the APN as a consult and adviser. The participants of the study had a very positive impression of this APN but still you could recognize some kind of ambivalence or hesitation among them for this new role. Together with the results of the study and scientific research a working model has been created for the APN in primary health care and homecare. Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis: Abscess Formation in the Tumor Leading to Bacteremia and Seizure

    Get PDF
A 66-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) was brought to the emergency room with seizures and high-grade fever. Seizure in adult NF1 patients raises concern for intracranial lesions. However, neurological examination and central nervous system imaging failed to detect any causative intracranial lesions for her seizure. Gram-positive cocci, Streptococcus anginosus, were detected by blood cultures. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a well-defined round mass 7 cm in diameter, which was found to be a small intestinal gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) containing an abscess. There was fistula formation between the intestinal lumen and the abscess, in which there were numerous Gram-positive cocci. The seizure may have been caused by hypoosmolality (hyponatremia and hypoproteinemia), which may result from decreased food intake associated with high-grade fever and general malaise. In this case GIST originating from the small intestine was invaded by S. anginosus through a fistula, leading to abscess formation, bacteremia, high-grade fever, and seizure, which was the first clinical manifestation

A novel high-spin heterometallic Ni12K4 cluster incorporating large Ni–azide circles and an in situ cyanomethylated di-2-pyridyl ketone

Reaction of di-2-pyridyl ketone (dpk) with nickel acetate and azide in the presence of potassium tert-butylate as a catalytic base generates the title compound, which contains the largest [Ni(m1,1-N3)]6 circles in the discrete ferromagnetically-coupled MII–azide cluster family, and shows an unprecedented in situ cyanomethylation of ketone.Clemente Juan, Juan Modesto, [email protected]
