    The Effect of Types of Agricultural Credit Programmes on Productivity of Small Scale Farming Businesses in Kenya: A Survey of Kimilili Bungoma Sub County

    Agricultural credit is considered as one of the strategic resources for pushing production to the high horizons consequently raising the living standards of the rural poor farming community. Harnessing the potentials of credit to stabilize and perhaps increase resource productivity and output growth in Agriculture is particularly justified when farmers face very low savings capacity, poorly developed rural financial markets and availability of appropriate farm technologies whose adoption is constrained by shortage of funds. Agriculture demands different forms of inputs to be productive, among which, credit is indispensable.Based on the need to promote an innovative, commercially-oriented and modern agriculture, Agricultural credit as a key constraint facing the farmers in food production was chosen for this study.The study examined the effect of Agricultural credit programmes on the productivity of rural farming households in Kimilili Bungoma Sub County.The study adopted a cross sectional survey design, wheredata was collected, with the use of a well-structured questionnaire, from 123 randomly selected small-scale rural farmers, who are users of micro-credit based on their statement, through multi-stage sampling technique.The data was processed and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the qualitative data while cross-tabulations were done to examine the relationship between variables. Farmers’ perceptions about the effect of credit were measured on a likert scale. The findings of this study showed that, Agricultural credit has the capacity to enhance the income of farmers who utilize it by more than 100% and this clearly defines the role of credit in the farming sector. Credit not only helps to expand the economies of size but also helps to increase the productivity of farms from the available resources. All the three types of credit i.e. seasonal, development and agribusiness credit complement each other in addressing the value chain. i.e. production ,processing and marketing. It is recommended among other things that, the government should provide attractive incentive system to farmers so as to boost production from the smallholder sector. Along with this, “Soft loans” should be advanced to farmers on very generous terms. The findings of this study suggest that, agricultural credit is productive, but its outreach is limited to a small proportion of the population. Its outreach should therefore be expanded and collateral requirements relaxed so that credit has its desired impact. There is little doubt that, agricultural credit channeled in the right direction can have significant anti-poverty effects, and that broadening the outreach of formal lending institutions can be a step forward in the right direction.     Standardization of electroencephalography for multi-site, multi-platform and multi-investigator studies: Insights from the canadian biomarker integration network in depression

    Subsequent to global initiatives in mapping the human brain and investigations of neurobiological markers for brain disorders, the number of multi-site studies involving the collection and sharing of large volumes of brain data, including electroencephalography (EEG), has been increasing. Among the complexities of conducting multi-site studies and increasing the shelf life of biological data beyond the original study are timely standardization and documentation of relevant study parameters. We presentthe insights gained and guidelines established within the EEG working group of the Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression (CAN-BIND). CAN-BIND is a multi-site, multi-investigator, and multiproject network supported by the Ontario Brain Institute with access to Brain-CODE, an informatics platform that hosts a multitude of biological data across a growing list of brain pathologies. We describe our approaches and insights on documenting and standardizing parameters across the study design, data collection, monitoring, analysis, integration, knowledge-translation, and data archiving phases of CAN-BIND projects. We introduce a custom-built EEG toolbox to track data preprocessing with open-access for the scientific community. We also evaluate the impact of variation in equipment setup on the accuracy of acquired data. Collectively, this work is intended to inspire establishing comprehensive and standardized guidelines for multi-site studies

    A chronologically reliable record of 17,000 years of biomass burning in the Lake Victoria area

    Fire regimes differ across tropical and subtropical biomes depending on multiple parameters whose interactions and levels of importance are poorly understood, particularly at multidecadal and longer time scales. In the catchment of Lake Victoria, savanna, rainforest, and Afromontane vegetation have interspersed over the last 17,000 years, which may have influenced the fire regime and vice versa. However, climate and humans are most often the primary drivers of fire regime changes, and analysing their respective roles is critical for understanding current and future fire regimes. Besides a handful of radiocarbon dates on grassy charcoal, the timescales of published studies of Lake Victoria sediment chronologies rely mostly on dates of bulk sediment, and chronological disagreements persist, mainly due to variation between estimations of the 14 C reservoir effect. Here, we provide independent 14 C chronologies for three Late Glacial and Holocene lacustrine sediment cores from various water depths and compare them with the biostratigraphy to establish a new chronological framework. We present the first continuous sedimentary charcoal records from Lake Victoria; these suggest that fire activity varied substantially during the past 17,000 years. Our new pollen records reveal the long-term vegetation dynamics. The available evidence suggests that before human impact increased during the Iron Age (ca. 2400 yr BP), biomass burning was linked to climate and vegetation reorganizations, such as warming, drying, and the expansion of rainforests and savannas. Our results imply that climate can trigger substantial fire regime changes and that vegetation responses to climate change can co-determine the fire regime. For instance, biomass burning decreased significantly when the rainforest expanded in response to increasing temperatures and moisture availability. Such insights into the long-term linkages between climate, vegetation, and the fire regime may help to refine ecosystem management and conservation strategies in a changing global climate

    A continuous fish fossil record reveals key insights into adaptive radiation.

    Adaptive radiations have been instrumental in generating a considerable amount of life's diversity. Ecological opportunity is thought to be a prerequisite for adaptive radiation1, but little is known about the relative importance of species' ecological versatility versus effects of arrival order in determining which lineage radiates2. Palaeontological records that could help answer this are scarce. In Lake Victoria, a large adaptive radiation of cichlid fishes evolved in an exceptionally short and recent time interval3. We present a rich continuous fossil record extracted from a series of long sediment cores along an onshore-offshore gradient. We reconstruct the temporal sequence of events in the assembly of the fish community from thousands of tooth fossils. We reveal arrival order, relative abundance and habitat occupation of all major fish lineages in the system. We show that all major taxa arrived simultaneously as soon as the modern lake began to form. There is no evidence of the radiating haplochromine cichlid lineage arriving before others, nor of their numerical dominance upon colonization; therefore, there is no support for ecological priority effects. However, although many taxa colonized the lake early and several became abundant, only cichlids persisted in the new deep and open-water habitats once these emerged. Because these habitat gradients are also known to have played a major role in speciation, our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that ecological versatility was key to adaptive radiation, not priority by arrival order nor initial numerical dominance

    Long-term ecological successions of vegetation around Lake Victoria (East Africa) in response to latest Pleistocene and Early Holocene climatic changes

    Reconstructions of ecosystem dynamics in tropical East Africa during the latest Pleistocene and the Holocene provide important long-term ecological insights, but so far, only a few, sometimes incomplete terrestrial records exist. In this paper, we present a new high-resolution palynological record from the Lake Victoria basin, covering the period from 16,600 to 9000 cal yr BP, when Afromontane forests and tropical rainforests gradually replaced the savanna. We discuss this dataset in the context of published palaeoclimate data, TEX86 inferred temperature and ήD leaf wax inferred precipitation records, to assess long-term ecological successions and their potential causes. By ca. 16,500 cal yr BP, the movement of the Afrotropical rainbelt, not only brought an increase in temperature and moisture into the Lake Victoria basin, but also promoted the spread of arboreal taxa, such as Celtis and Podocarpus, at the expense of the savanna. At that time, fires were prominent in the sparse Afromontane vegetation. Later from ca. 15,500–15,000 cal yr BP, temperature and humidity rose and Afromontane trees such as Olea and Macaranga spread slightly, while grasses were burning in the savanna. During the period from 13,250 to 10,700 cal yr BP, Afromontane vegetation dominated by Olea became more prominent and expanded towards the lowlands where the tropical rainforest or gallery forest established; however, the savanna only marginally retreated. An initial spread of tropical rainforests occurred from ca. 11,500–11,100 cal yr BP during the onset of the Holocene, when temperatures and moisture further increased. Subsequently, between 10,700 and 10,300 cal yr BP the tropical savanna was largely replaced by the tropical rainforest, while the Afromontane forest likely spread to higher elevations, similar to the patterns observed today. Our high-resolution record demonstrates the dynamic response of African tropical ecosystems to major temperature and humidity variations from 16,600 to 9000 cal yr BP, including some of the most important landscape transformations in East Africa in the past 20,000 years

    The safety profile of newly approved drugs and therapeutic biologics is less well developed by pre-marketing clinical testing than is the efficacy profile. The full safety profile of an approved product is established during years of clinical use. For nearly 40 years, the FDA has relied on the voluntary reporting of adverse events by healthcare practitioners and patients to help establish the safety of marketed products. Epidemiologic studies, including case series, secular trends, case-control and cohort studies, are used to supplement the investigation of a safety signal. Ideally, active surveillance systems would supplement the identification and exploration of safety signals. The FDA has implemented a number of initiatives to help identify safety problems with drugs and continues to evaluate their efforts

    Multi-modality machine learning predicting Parkinson's disease

    Personalized medicine promises individualized disease prediction and treatment. The convergence of machine learning (ML) and available multimodal data is key moving forward. We build upon previous work to deliver multimodal predictions of Parkinson's disease (PD) risk and systematically develop a model using GenoML, an automated ML package, to make improved multi-omic predictions of PD, validated in an external cohort. We investigated top features, constructed hypothesis-free disease-relevant networks, and investigated drug-gene interactions. We performed automated ML on multimodal data from the Parkinson's progression marker initiative (PPMI). After selecting the best performing algorithm, all PPMI data was used to tune the selected model. The model was validated in the Parkinson's Disease Biomarker Program (PDBP) dataset. Our initial model showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 89.72% for the diagnosis of PD. The tuned model was then tested for validation on external data (PDBP, AUC 85.03%). Optimizing thresholds for classification increased the diagnosis prediction accuracy and other metrics. Finally, networks were built to identify gene communities specific to PD. Combining data modalities outperforms the single biomarker paradigm. UPSIT and PRS contributed most to the predictive power of the model, but the accuracy of these are supplemented by many smaller effect transcripts and risk SNPs. Our model is best suited to identifying large groups of individuals to monitor within a health registry or biobank to prioritize for further testing. This approach allows complex predictive models to be reproducible and accessible to the community, with the package, code, and results publicly available

    The Rural Household Multiple Indicator Survey, data from 13,310 farm households in 21 countries

    The Rural Household Multiple Indicator Survey (RHoMIS) is a standardized farm household survey approach which collects information on 758 variables covering household demographics, farm area, crops grown and their production, livestock holdings and their production, agricultural product use and variables underlying standard socio-economic and food security indicators such as the Probability of Poverty Index, the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale, and household dietary diversity. These variables are used to quantify more than 40 different indicators on farm and household characteristics, welfare, productivity, and economic performance. Between 2015 and the beginning of 2018, the survey instrument was applied in 21 countries in Central America, sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. The data presented here include the raw survey response data, the indicator calculation code, and the resulting indicator values. These data can be used to quantify on- and off-farm pathways to food security, diverse diets, and changes in poverty for rural smallholder farm households

    Learning together for and with the Martuwarra Fitzroy River

    Co-production across scientific and Indigenous knowledge systems has become a cornerstone of research to enhance knowledge, practice, ethics, and foster sustainability transformations. However, the profound differences in world views and the complex and contested histories of nation-state colonisation on Indigenous territories, highlight both opportunities and risks for Indigenous people when engaging with knowledge co-production. This paper investigates the conditions under which knowledge co-production can lead to improved Indigenous adaptive environmental planning and management among remote land-attached Indigenous peoples through a case study with ten Traditional Owner groups in the Martuwarra (Fitzroy River) Catchment in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. The research team built a 3D map of the river and used it, together with an interactive table-top projector, to bring together both scientific and Indigenous spatial knowledge. Participatory influence mapping, aligned with Traditional Owner priorities to achieve cultural governance and management planning goals set out in the Fitzroy River Declaration, investigated power relations. An analytical framework, examining underlying mechanisms of social learning, knowledge promotion and enhancing influence, based on different theories of change, was applied to unpack the immediate outcomes from these activities. The analysis identified that knowledge co-production activities improved the accessibility of the knowledge, the experiences of the knowledge users, strengthened collective identity and partnerships, and strengthened Indigenous-led institutions. The focus on cultural governance and management planning goals in the Fitzroy River Declaration enabled the activities to directly affect key drivers of Indigenous adaptive environmental planning and management—the Indigenous-led institutions. The nation-state arrangements also gave some support to local learning and decision-making through a key Indigenous institution, Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council. Knowledge co-production with remote land-attached Indigenous peoples can improve adaptive environmental planning and management where it fosters learning together, is grounded in the Indigenous-led institutions and addresses their priorities

    Corporate Governance for Sustainability

    The current model of corporate governance needs reform. There is mounting evidence that the practices of shareholder primacy drive company directors and executives to adopt the same short time horizon as financial markets. Pressure to meet the demands of the financial markets drives stock buybacks, excessive dividends and a failure to invest in productive capabilities. The result is a ‘tragedy of the horizon’, with corporations and their shareholders failing to consider environmental, social or even their own, long-term, economic sustainability. With less than a decade left to address the threat of climate change, and with consensus emerging that businesses need to be held accountable for their contribution, it is time to act and reform corporate governance in the EU. The statement puts forward specific recommendations to clarify the obligations of company boards and directors and make corporate governance practice significantly more sustainable and focused on the long term
