    Approaches to hazard-oriented groundwater management based on multivariate analysis of groundwater quality

    Drinking water extracted near rivers in alluvial aquifers is subject to potential microbial contamination due to rapidly infiltrating river water during high discharge events. The heterogeneity of river-groundwater interaction and hydrogeological characteristics of the aquifer renders a complex pattern of groundwater quality. The quality of the extracted drinking water can be managed using decision support and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) systems, but the detection of potential contamination remains a complex task to master. The methodology proposed herein uses a combination of high-resolution measurements and multivariate statistical analyses to characterise actual groundwater quality and detect potential contamination. The aim of this project was to improve the protection of riverine groundwater extraction wells and to increase the degrees of freedom available to the management of fluvial planes with drinking-water production and aquifer recharge by river-groundwater interaction. The monitoring network was set up in the Reinacherheide in North-west Switzerland and encompassed the depth-oriented installation of multiparameter instruments, a surface-water monitoring station and a flow-through cell with an automated sampler and high-precision measurement instruments. The parameters recorded included temperature, electrical conductivity, spectral absorption coefficient, particle density and turbidity. Two of the observation wells were equipped with a telemetry system and the flow cell could be controlled remotely. The well-field encompassed eight groundwater extraction wells. The optimal choice of observation wells and indicator parameters was assessed using principal component analysis of groundwater head, temperature and electrical conductivity time-series to detect the influence of, for example, river-water infiltration or river-stage fluctuations on the time-series recorded in the groundwater observation wells. Groundwater head was susceptible to pressure waves induced by both river-stage fluctuations and groundwater extraction. Temperature time-series showed only weak responses to high discharge events. Electrical conductivity, however, showed a distance-driven response pattern to high discharge events. To further assess the representative strength of individual groundwater quality indicator parameters for identifying microbial contamination, a bi-weekly and a high-resolution sampling campaign were carried out. The results showed high faecal-indicator bacteria densities (E. coli and Enterococcus sp.) at the beginning of high discharge events, followed by a rapid decrease, leading to a strong hit-and-miss characteristic in the bi-weekly sampling campaign. The third approach applied used the neural network-based combination of self-organizing maps and Sammon's projection (SOM-SM) to detect shifts in groundwater quality system states. The nonlinear analysis was carried out with groundwater head, temperature and electrical conductivity time-series from six observation wells. The subsequent shading of the projected trajectory of system states with independent time-series (spectral absorption coefficient and particle density) allowed the identification of critical system states, when actual groundwater quality decreased and contamination of the extraction wells was imminent. The time at which the changes in system state occurred and were detected were used as potential warning indicators for the water supplier. The effects of altered groundwater extraction (as a consequence of the SOM-SM warning) were then simulated using a groundwater flow model. The outcome of the SOM-SM analysis is, thus, proposed as an interface between the monitoring system and extraction-well management system. The proposed approach incorporates hydrogeological knowledge and the analysis of prevalent conditions concerning river-groundwater interaction with real-time telemetric data transfer, data-base management and nonlinear statistical analysis to detect deterioration in actual groundwater quality due to rapidly infiltrating river water. As the SOM-SM is not based on threshold values and independent of indicator parameters, the approach can be transferred to other sites with similar characteristics

    Hairdressers as a Source of Social Support

    This item is only available electronically.With the exception of health care professionals, hairdressing is one of the few occupations where workers physically interact with clients. As a result of this, hairdressers are people to whom clients are often comfortable in confiding private information. Despite this, relatively little is known about how hairdressers understand and experience this role as informal confidants. This study aimed to address this using an in-depth qualitative approach to capture what hairdressers are hearing from clients, and how hairdressers respond and feel about supporting clients. Interviews conducted were participant led using prompt questions and were transcribed and analysed using Thematic Analysis. Results indicate clients disclose information about family, health, identity, mental health and women’s health. Important themes to emerge in relation to the role of hairdressers included: the need to have a client focus; blurring role boundaries; behaving like a therapist; providing a place of safety and advice, while also maintaining confidentiality. Hairdressers reported feeling more is involved than a hair service, undervalued, emotionally drained, and in need of support, however, also reported having good job satisfaction. The relationships among the experimental instruments, the Lee-Clark Reading Readiness Test, kindergarten teacher judgment, and first grade post-readiness reading group placement determined the predictive validity.     An Analysis of Gender-Based Pay Equity of Instructional Faculty Members in the Virginia Community College System.

    Based on the premises of Equity Theory (Adams, 1963), this study evaluated the Virginia Community College System compensation rates and compared the salaries of similarly ranked and similarly qualified male and female faculty members. A quantitative analysis was conducted of the reported salaries of all full-time instructional faculty members in the Virginia Community College System in the Fall of 2006. The specific areas examined included salary, rank, highest degree earned, and full- or parttime employment status. Using the tenets of Equity Theory as a foundation, this study evaluated any differences in the compensation and rank between male and female faculty members to determine the fairness of salary policies. The population of this study included all instructional faculty members employed during academic year 2006-2007 in the 23 community colleges in the state of Virginia. Results of this analysis indicated that there were differences based on gender in the mean salaries of faculty members of the Virginia Community College System at the professor faculty rank for VCCS faculty members outside of Northern Virginia Community College and at the associate professor rank at Northern Virginia Community College. Findings of this study further indicated that faculty members in the Virginia Community College system overall were slightly more likely to be female, hold master\u27s degrees, and hold assistant professor rank. Findings indicated that both males and females were equally likely to be employed as part-time faculty members in the Virginia Community College System and that both education and experience contributed significantly to salary in the Virginia Community College System

    What Is “The Good” Of Arts-Based Peacebuilding? Questions of Value and Evaluation in Current Practice

    In a context of growing attention to the benefits of the arts in peacebuilding, this article reports on the findings of a small scoping study that aimed to identify how the arts are perceived and supported by international development agencies. Based on a 2012 analysis of five international aid agencies working in the South East Asia and Pacific region, the study found that arts and creative practices are not, as yet, afforded a significant role in current policy or strategy, although arts activity is recognised as a social development tool by agencies working in partnership with local organisations. Resulting from an analysis of participating agencies’ publicly available documentation, and interviews with staff, arts practitioners and volunteers working in field-based arts projects, this article argues that the value of arts-based interventions in peacebuilding and development is yet to be fully realised. Bringing field experience as well as policy and research backgrounds to the analysis, the authors consider why this might be the case and pose broader questions about the communication, role and influence of evaluation as one factor in this. They argue for a better acknowledgment of the diverse applications and implications of the “use” of the arts within complex social, political, and cultural systems by linking this call with evaluation methodologies that may better reveal the ways in which such projects “raise possibilities” rather than “confirm probabilities.” This article suggests a four-question schema for augmenting the documentation and evaluation of arts-based work to more authentically capture “the good” that may arise from the emergent nature of artmaking itself

While we have seen great advancements and barriers broken, we remain limited in our ability to optimize science discovery without onboard intelligent capabilities to enable complex system missions. In this paper, we focus on AI technologies and cross-disciplinary directions for sparking research and development for space applications. This paper attempts to bridge two disparate fields of research, to enhance the development of intelligent space systems by providing a comprehensive survey of existing technologies and showcasing a strategic rubric for future advancements

    Bradyrhizobium japonicum produces delta-aminolevulinic acid, the universal precursor of tetrapyrroles, in a reaction catalyzed by the product of the hemA gene. Expression of the B. japonicum hemA gene is affected by iron availability. Activity of a hemA-lacZ fusion is increased approximately threefold by iron, and RNA analysis indicates that iron regulation is at the level of mRNA accumulation. To our knowledge, this is the first example of an iron-regulated heme biosynthetic gene in prokaryotes
