    Isoconfigurational Elastic Constants and Liquid Fragility of a Bulk Metallic Glass Forming Alloy

    Samples of Zr46.25Ti8.25Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 were isothermally annealed and quenched near the glass transition temperature and studied by the pulse-echo overlap technique. The shear modulus G of the samples shows a strong reversible dependence on annealing temperatures and, thus, on the specific configurational potential energy of the equilibrium liquid. The low-T dependence of G of the configurationally frozen glasses shows linear temperature dependence as expected by Debye-Grüneisen theory. The T dependence of G in the liquid state is directly related to the viscosity and fragility of the liquid

    Recombinant Factor IX characterized by a high percentage of active protein can be obtained in the milk of transgenic animals that incorporate chimeric DNA molecules according to the present invention. Transgenic animals of the present invention are produced by introducing into developing embryos DNA that encodes Factor IX, such that the foreign DNA is stably incorporated in the DNA of germ line cells of the mature animal. Particularly efficient expression was accomplished using a chimeric construct comprising a mammary gland specific promoter, Factor IX cDNA that lacked the complete or any portion of the 5\u27-untranslated and 3\u27-un-translated region, which is substituted with a 5- and 3\u27-end of the mouse whey acidic protein gene. In vitro cell cultures of cells explanted from the transgenic mammal of the invention and methods of producing Factor IX from such said culture and methods of treating hemophilia B are also described

    Thermal and elastic properties of Cu–Zr–Be bulk metallic glass forming alloys

    The compositional dependence of thermal and elastic properties of Cu–Zr–Be ternary bulk metallic glass forming alloys was systematically studied. There exists a linear relationship between the glass transition temperature Tg and the total Zr concentration. G decreases linearly with increasing Zr concentration as well. The results also show that Tg, shear modulus G, and Poisson's ratio nu are very sensitive to changes in compositions. Low Tg, low G, and relatively high nu can be achieved with high Zr and Ti concentration

    Incidence of Severe Hepatotoxicity Related to Antiretroviral Therapy in HIV/HCV Coinfected Patients

    Introduction. Hepatotoxicity is a concern in HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfected patients due to their underlying liver disease. This study assessed the incidence of hepatotoxicity in HIV/HCV co-infected patients in two outpatient infectious diseases clinics. Methods. HIV/HCV co-infected adults were included in this retrospective study if they were PI or NNRTI naïve at their first clinic visit and were initiated on an NNRTI- and/or PI-based antiretroviral regimen. Patients were excluded if they had active or chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV). The primary objective was to determine the overall incidence of severe hepatotoxicity. Results. Fifty-six of the 544 patients identified met inclusion criteria. The incidence of severe hepatotoxicity was 10.7% (6/56 patients). Severe hepatotoxicity occurred with efavirenz (N = 2), nevirapine (N = 1), indinavir (N = 1), nelfinavir (N = 1), and saquinavir/ritonavir (N = 1). Conclusion. The incidence of severe hepatotoxicity appears to be low in this retrospective analysis of HIV/HCV co-infected patients receiving a PI-and/or NNRTI-based regimen
