    Economic Analysis of Stand-Alone Hybrid Wind/PV/Diesel Water Pumping System: A Case Study in Egypt

    The design and evaluation of a stand-alone hybrid renewable energy system for pumping underground water for small farm irrigation is presented. Given environmental conditions, system specifications and daily load demand data, the optimal size of main system components is obtained using a sizing algorithm. Different renewable energy systems are compared using yearly simulations, on hourly base via specialized commercial software simulation packages PVSYST and HOMER, to simulate the system performance and to reach the optimum configurations based on the objective criteria. The criteria used in economic optimization are the net present cost and the cost of energy, with the percent of the capacity shortage. The following systems can be compared: PV only, PV with horizontal axis wind turbine, PV with vertical axis wind turbine, and PV with horizontal axis wind turbine and diesel generator and diesel generator only. The simulation also was carried out for different load patterns for optimum operation. The study was illustrated for climatic conditions of an isolated area in El-Tour City, Sinai, Egypt.     Diatomite alleviates the adverse effects of salinity stress on growth and yield of Stevia rebaudiana

    ABSTRACT The present study was planned to investigate the role of diatomitein salt tolerance of Stevia rebaudiana using pot experimental. Diatomite increased the growth characters of plants, hence resulted in higher yields. In contrast, the seawater treatments alone significantly decreased these parameters in both seasons. While, treating Stevia rebaudianaplants with diatomite prior to salinity stress decreased the detrimental effectof salt stress on growth and yield.The Esterase isoenzymesprofiles has indicated that salinity, diatomite and their combinations has caused biochemical changes in Steviar. plants. On the other hand, saline water irrigation decreased Rebaudioside A concentration at the second harvest as estimated by HPLC analysis in both seasons .The effect of the interaction between salinity and diatomite was the mosteffective treatments for Rebaudioside A when Stevia rebaudianaplants treated by salt concentration 4000 ppm and 2.5 g/kgsoil diatomite

    SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and COVID-19 disease severity are associated with genetic variants affecting gene expression in a variety of tissues

    Variability in SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and COVID-19 disease severity between individuals is partly due to genetic factors. Here, we identify 4 genomic loci with suggestive associations for SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and 19 for COVID-19 disease severity. Four of these 23 loci likely have an ethnicity-specific component. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) signals in 11 loci colocalize with expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) associated with the expression of 20 genes in 62 tissues/cell types (range: 1:43 tissues/gene), including lung, brain, heart, muscle, and skin as well as the digestive system and immune system. We perform genetic fine mapping to compute 99% credible SNP sets, which identify 10 GWAS loci that have eight or fewer SNPs in the credible set, including three loci with one single likely causal SNP. Our study suggests that the diverse symptoms and disease severity of COVID-19 observed between individuals is associated with variants across the genome, affecting gene expression levels in a wide variety of tissue types

    Novel approach to gastric mucosal defect repair using fresh amniotic membrane allograft in dogs (experimental study)

    Abstract Background Gastric mucosal defect could result from several causative factors including the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Helicobacter pylori infection, gastrointestinal and spinal cord diseases, and neoplasia. This study was performed to achieve a novel simple, inexpensive, and effective surgical technique for the repair of gastric mucosal defect. Methods Six adult male mongrel dogs were divided into two groups (three dogs each). In the control positive group (C + ve), dogs were subjected to surgical induction of gastric mucosal defect and then treated using traditional medicinal treatment for such a condition. In the amniotic membrane (AM) group, dogs were subjected to the same operation and then fresh AM allograft was applied. Clinical, endoscopic, biochemical (serum protein and lipid and pepsin activity in gastric juice), histopathological, and immunohistochemistry evaluations were performed. Results Regarding endoscopic examination, there was no sign of inflammatory reaction around the grafted area in the AM group compared to the C + ve group. The leukocytic infiltration in the gastric ulcer was well detected in the control group and was less observed in the AM group. In the AM group, the concentrations of both protein and lipid profiles were nearly the same as those in serum samples taken preoperatively at zero time, which indicated that the AM grafting acted the same as gastric mucosa. The re-epithelization of the gastric ulcer in the C + ve group was not yet detected at 21 days, while in the AM group it was well observed covering most of the gastric ulcer. AM accelerated the re-epithelization of the gastric ulcer. The fibrous connective tissue and the precursor of collagen (COL IA1) were poorly detected in the gastric ulcer with AM application. Conclusion Using fresh AM allograft for repairing gastric mucosal defect in dogs showed great impact as a novel method to achieve optimum reconstruction of the gastric mucosal architecture and restoration of pre-epithelial, epithelial, and post-epithelial normal gastric mucosal barriers

    Efficacy of Olea europaea leaves and propolis extracts in the control of experimentally induced infectious bronchitis in broiler chickens

    Infectious bronchitis (IB) is a viral disease that causes serious economic losses in the broiler industry. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Olea europaea leaves and propolis extracts (OLP) mixture at a rate of 400 μg and 100 mg/mL, respectively, in curing IB in broiler chickens. One-day-old Ross broiler chicks were randomized into four groups (G) of twenty-one chicks; G1 (control negative; no infection and treatment); G2 (no infection, treatment only), G3 (control positive; infection only and no treatment) and G4 (infection and treatment) that infected with IBv (106 EID50/ml) at 21 days old. The OLP treatment was applied for birds in G2 and G4 at a dose of 0.5 mL/liter drinking water for three successive days. The growth performance, clinical and pathological examinations, and viral shedding were evaluated. The use of the OLP resulted in protection from IB infection through the significant improvement of performance parameters such as weight gain and feed conversion ratio, decrease in mortality rate, lowering disease severity, and rapid recovery from the observed clinical signs (mainly respiratory signs), gross and microscopic lesions in the trachea, lung, and kidneys as compared to those in the positive control (G3). Moreover, the viral shedding in the OLP-treated chicks (G4) was significantly decreased in tracheal and cloacal swabs to a rate less than 3×103 IBv genome copy number and became not detectable at 14-days post-infection (dpi) in their cloacal swabs. In conclusion, OLP can potentially display an antiviral effect against IB in broiler chickens. Therefore, adding OLP to the chicken drinking water is recommended to prevent and control IB [Ger. J.     Avian leukosis virus (ALV) is an oncogenic contagious virus infecting different avian species. This study aims to molecularly detect the circulating strains of ALV in various chicken and duck farms at different Egyptian governorates. Freshly dead birds were exposed for postmortem examination (PM) then samples were processed for histopathological examination as well as molecular detection of ALV using qRT-PCR and sequence analysis of the envelope glycoprotein gene (gp85) surface protein antigen with detection of recombination events that might be found between the detected strains. PM revealed the existence of diffuse enlargement of most internal organs, and in some cases, nodular enlargement was observed. Histopathological investigation showed myeloid cells infiltration of eosinophilic granular cytoplasm in the examined tissues. Five molecularly positive samples were sequenced and submitted in the GenBank with accession numbers MZ614719, MZ614720, MZ614721, MZ614722, and MZ614723. The phylogenetic tree construction based on the sequenced gp85 gene revealed that all Egyptian isolates were nearly arranged in a single branch despite the year of collection and were phylogenetically distant from other sequences. In general, studies concerning the genetic diversity of gp85, and the recombination events concluded that the ALV-J virus is a wide host range involving both chicken and ducks. Because ALV causes serious financial problems to threaten poultry production and neither vaccines nor treatment tools are now available for ALV prevention and control, periodical molecular monitoring with whole genome sequence and analysis for the circulating strains with ethical eradication of the positive birds are recommended to overcome such a problem

    Early detection of cystitis in equine is essential to improve the prognosis and outcome of therapy. However, the conventional white light endoscopy is not sufficiently accurate for this purpose. Hence, this study evaluated chromoendoscopy as a recent diagnostic tool for cystitis in female donkeys. For this purpose, 5 apparently normal donkeys (control group) and 5 female donkeys with cystitis (diseased group) were used. Physical and rectal examinations, urine analysis, white light cystoscopy, methylene blue-based chromoendoscopy and histopathology were performed in all animals. Turbid urine exhibiting an alkaline pH and a significant (P = .02) increase in the numbers of RBCs and WBCs was observed in the diseased group compared to the control one. In the control group, white light cystoscopy showed a smooth pale pink glistening mucosa with two openings of the ureters and visible submucosal blood vessels. During chromocystoscopy, faint bluish discoloration of the mucosal surface with clearly visible submucosal blood vessels was detectable. These findings were correlated with the histopathological findings of the biopsies collected from the urinary bladder. In the diseased group, white-light cystoscopy showed clearly visible blood vessels, mildly hyperaemic mucosa in focal or diffuse forms and small vesicle formation. Chromocystoscopy revealed dark bluish oedematous and irregular mucosa either in a focal form or a diffuse form (marbled appearance) with deeply stained submucosal blood vessels. Histopathologically, the urothelium was hyperplastic with squamous metaplasia and the lamina propria was infiltrated with few leukocytes and congested blood vessels. Small bluish dots representing the absorbed methylene blue dye were seen in the inflamed areas against the lightly stained mucosa of the bladder. Severe diffuse necrotic cystitis was also seen with bacterial aggregations on the surface. Gram's staining revealed both gram positive bacilli and Gram positive coccobacilli. In conclusion, chromoendoscopy is a helpful tool for early diagnosis of cystitis in female donkeys and enables targeted biopsies, which improves the prognosis and outcome of therapy

    Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most degenerative joint diseases in both human and veterinary medicine. The objective of the present study was the early diagnosis of OA in donkeys using a reliable grading of the disease based on clinical, chemical, and molecular alterations. OA was induced by intra-articular injection of 25 mg monoiodoacetate (MIA) as a single dose into the left radiocarpal joint of nine donkeys. Animals were clinically evaluated through the assessment of lameness score, radiographic, and ultrasonographic findings for seven months. Synovial fluid and cartilage samples were collected from both normal and diseased joints for the assessment of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activity, COL2A1 protein expression level, and histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis of Caspase-3. Animals showed the highest lameness score post-induction after one week then decreased gradually with the progression of radiographical and ultrasonographic changes. MMP activity and COL2A1 and Caspase-3 expression increased, accompanied by articular cartilage degeneration and loss of proteoglycan. OA was successfully graded in Egyptian donkeys, with the promising use of COL2A1and Caspase-3 for prognosis. However, MMPs failed to discriminate between early and late grades of OA
