    Effects on the Non-Relativistic Dynamics of a Charged Particle Interacting with a Chern-Simons Potential

    The hydrogen atom in two dimensions, described by a Schr\"odinger equation with a Chern-Simons potential, is numerically solved. Both its wave functions and eigenvalues were determined for small values of the principal quantum number nn. The only possible states correspond to l=0l=0. How the result depends on the topological mass of the photon is also discussed. In the case n=1n=1, the energy of the fundamental state corresponding to different choice for the photon mass scale are found to be comprehended in the interval 3,5×103eVE9,0×102eV-3,5 \times 10^{-3} eV \leq E \leq -9,0 \times 10^{-2} eV, corresponding to a mean radius of the electron in the range (5.637±0.005)×108 (5.637 \pm 0.005) \times 10^{-8}~cm (48.87±0.03)×108\leq \leq (48.87 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-8}~cm. In any case, the planar atom is found to be very weekly bounded showing some features similar to the Rydberg atoms in three dimensions with a Coulombian interaction.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Effects of Poverty on Children Educational Attainment in Isua, Akoko South East Local Government, Ondo State

    The overall objective of this study is to provide an insight into the influence of poverty on the children’s educational attainment in Isua-Akoko. Poverty is said to exist when people lacks the means to satisfy their basic needs. Thus, improving the educational attainment of the population is an important requirement to reduce poverty amid the populace and foster development. However, the study employed 202 questionnaire to gather information and data from household parents, teachers and students (randomly selected from different social background) in which 146 were reported poor. Binary probit and logit method were used. The result obtained indicates that parent level of education, role model and parent’s autonomous income greatly influence children’s educational attainment in Isua-Akoko. While parent level of income and government policy did not have any influence on the children’s education. The researchers thus suggest that to increase the rate of educational enrolment/completion the following measures should be put in place which include:  heavy investment in formal and non-formal education (vocational training), good governance in the delivery of education incentives and involvement of the people at the local levels in education development decisions.     Introducing programming to basic schools students using robotics

    The present work reports on the development of programming activities with students from the 1st and 2nd cycles of schools in the town of Braga in the northwestern Portuguese region of Minho. These activities of promotion of computer programming were applied in order to promote the programming and innovative practices on science and technology education. The explored interdisciplinary methodologies in STEM teaching-learning processes, stimulate critical thinking and creativity while promoting the benefits of learning in collaborative environments. The active involvement of the students in these robot programming, “high tech” and trendy, activities is easy to achieve if the proposed challenges are set at an adequate level of difficulty and appealing enough to the age group and level of cognitive development of the student. Whenever possible to the students is given the possibility of choosing or even defining the problem/subject they will be exploring by programming a robot, which is seen as a mechanical artificial being the students will be able to understand, interact with and use and control. The teacher/educator should be available to provide to the students a proper empowering environment and to provide all support requested by the students giving, as much as possible, not straight answers but yes clues and small hints and examples leading the students to reach, themselves, to a solution to the problem the students face or to an answer to the students’ question that satisfy their own critical judgment. Through the programming testing process, it is possible to verify and see the level of perception and proficiency of the students assessing what students have learned and accomplished, creating immediate feedback for students and adjusting or re-orienting the students’ focus on a particular task or reasoning process. If well succeeded these activities can develop among the students a sound appreaciation towards Science Technology and Engineering while establishing relevant knowledge, creativity critical reasoning abilities and a large number of other competencies that will be valuable for the future development of the students in their studies and academic life but also in their future careers. The improvement of the self-esteem of the students when they realize they can actually “do it” is also a major benefit of this type of activities. As well in what concerns the boost of the self-esteem and selft-appreaciation of their teachers and educators, that often fear to explore this type of innovative approaches

    Determining the number of components in mixture regression models: an experimental design

    Despite the popularity of mixture regression models, the decision of how many components to retain remains an open issue. This study thus sought to compare the performance of 26 information and classification criteria. Each criterion was evaluated in terms of that component's success rate. The research's full experimental design included manipulating 9 factors and 22 levels. The best results were obtained for 5 criteria: Akaike information criteria 3 (AIC3), AIC4, Hannan-Quinn information criteria, integrated completed likelihood (ICL) Bayesian information criteria (BIC) and ICL with BIC approximation.
