Fitting in the genre of the French "nouvelles à la main", the manuscript gazettes of the Évora Public Library are an enormous set of references to the history of the times of King John V. We may find there news from all around Europe, from the several overseas administrations, from the daily life of the Court streets and, above all, from the high aristocracy of the kingdom. These are, accordingly, the last gold mines to the knowledge of "the rise of Enlightenment" in Portugal

Education for citizenship is currently one of the educational priorities, regarding the curricular guidelines during compulsory schooling. One of the privileged themes is about gender identity, especially regarding the roles played by men and women within the family, as a way as a way to reflect on stereotypes and prevention of domestic violence. Considering national and international guidelines, which value the centrality of education in the formation of children and young people, the aim of this study is to analyse the perceptions of young students about the roles of men and women in the daily life of their families, based on gender marks in social relations. Based on a qualitative methodology, data collection focused on the analysis of comments written by students, from the last years of secondary education of a school in Porto. The study led to the conclusion that students are aware of changes in the roles of men and women, following the evolution of the concept of family and the emergence of new social models personified by celebrities that combine family and professional responsibilities. However, gender stereotypes persist, continuing to condition interpersonal relationships in the family, which proves the importance of students' reflection and awareness of this theme, that should be reinforced in the school context.

Methods: Multicenter, prospective, observational study of a cohort of preterm infants born with gestational age (GA) < 32 weeks or birth weight < 1500 g in eight Portuguese neonatal intensive care units. All demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from the first week of life were collected. Univariate logistic regression was used to assess risk factors for ROP and then multivariate regression was performed. Results: A total of 455 infants were included in the study. The median GA was 29.6 weeks, and the median birth weight was 1295 g. One hundred and seventy-two infants (37.8%) developed ROP. Median values of erythrocytes (p < 0.001), hemoglobin (p < 0.001), hematocrit (p < 0.001), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (p < 0.001), lymphocytes (p = 0.035), and platelets (p = 0.003) of the group of infants diagnosed with ROP any stage were lower than those without ROP. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (p = 0.044), red blood cell distribution width (RDW) (p < 0.001), erythroblasts (p < 0.001), neutrophils (p = 0.030), neutrophils-lymphocytes ratio (p = 0.028), and basophils (p = 0.003) were higher in the ROP group. Higher values of MCV, erythroblasts, and basophils remained significantly associated with ROP after multivariate regression. Conclusion: In our cohort, the increase in erythroblasts, MCV, and basophils in the first week of life was significantly and independently associated with the development of ROP. These CBC parameters may be early predictive biomarkers for ROP.Open access funding provided by FCT|FCCN (b-on). Artificial Intelligence for Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: A Roadmap from Technology Development to Clinical Practice

    No full text
Stomach cancer is the third deadliest type of cancer in the world (0.86 million deaths in 2017). In 2035, a 20% increase will be observed both in incidence and mortality due to demographic effects if no interventions are foreseen. Upper GI endoscopy (UGIE) plays a paramount role in early diagnosis and, therefore, improved survival rates. On the other hand, human and technical factors can contribute to misdiagnosis while performing UGIE. In this scenario, artificial intelligence (AI) has recently shown its potential in compensating for the pitfalls of UGIE, by leveraging deep learning architectures able to efficiently recognize endoscopic patterns from UGIE video data. This work presents a review of the current state-of-the-art algorithms in the application of AI to gastroscopy. It focuses specifically on the threefold tasks of assuring exam completeness (i.e., detecting the presence of blind spots) and assisting in the detection and characterization of clinical findings, both gastric precancerous conditions and neoplastic lesion changes. Early and promising results have already been obtained using well-known deep learning architectures for computer vision, but many algorithmic challenges remain in achieving the vision of AI-assisted UGIE. Future challenges in the roadmap for the effective integration of AI tools within the UGIE clinical practice are discussed, namely the adoption of more robust deep learning architectures and methods able to embed domain knowledge into image/video classifiers as well as the availability of large, annotated datasets

Segundo dados do Portal do Arqueólogo, existem 35 sítios no concelho.

Thermodynamic studies of partitioning behavior of lysozyme and conalbumin in aqueous two-phase systems

The objective of this study was to determine the thermodynamic parameters (ΔtrG, ΔtrH and ΔtrS) associated with lysozyme and conalbumin partitioning in aqueous two-phases systems (ATPS). Influence of salt type and polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentrations on the partition coefficient of lysozyme and conalbumin from egg white was studied. The evaluated ATPS were composed of PEG 1500 and inorganic salts (sodium citrate and sodium sulfate) at a temperature of 25 °C and pH 7.0, with PEG 1500 g mol−1 concentrations of 14%, 16% and 18% (mass basis). Partitioning of lysozyme in PEG–citrate ATPS was enthalpically driven, however the PEG–sulfate ATPS was entropically driven. The tested systems can be employed for the separation of these two proteins in egg white, due to the fact that lysozyme migrates toward the polymeric phase and conalbumin to the saline phase in both ATPS. A high recovery of conalbumin in the saline phase of the PEG–sulfate ATPS was determined to be enthalpically driven.National Council of Technological and Scientific Development (CNPq)Foundation to Research Support of the Minas Gerais State (FAPEMIG
