    The role of the carbohydrates in plasmatic membrane.

    In the following paper, authors describe glycans present on cell membranes as they affect the folding, the spatial arrangement, the behavior and the interaction with the substrate of some membrane proteins. Authors describe the synthesis and assembly of a glycan on a protein, the formation of N-glycans, the maturation of an N-glycan in different cellular compartments, the structure of the glycocalyx and how it interacts with any pathogens. The study of the E-cadherin and the potassium channel to demonstrate how glycans affect the spatial arrangement, the stability and activity of the glycoproteins on the membranes. Subsequently, authors analyze the correlation between disorder glycosylation and human health. Authors define glycosylation disorders as a genetic defect that alter the structure or biosynthesis of glycans (sugar chains) in one or more biosynthetic pathways. Human glycosylation disorders reflect the disruption of early steps in the pathways of glycan biosynthesis. More in details, authors analyze the role of glycoprotein in tumor cell adhesion, in particular, in cells MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 on zeolite scaffold. In the same time, the role of metalloproteinase is described in the mobilization of cancer cells and in metastasis

    Three years field trials to assess the effect of kaolin made particles and copper on olive-fruit fly (B.oleae Gmelin) infestations in Sicily

    In most countries of Mediterranean Basin, Bactrocera oleae (Gmel), the olive fruit fly, is the key pest insect on olives. In Sicily this pest causes losses of fruits and a poor quality olive oil. Many researchers have recently carried out some field studies which were based on the use of kaolin and copper against the olive-fruit fly. In the last years these products have been effective several times in reducing olive fly infestation. Kaolin had, also, some important effect in reducing heat-stress in fruit crops and olive-trees. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of kaolin and copper treatment on olive infestations in Sicily and to evaluate chemical and sensory parameters of oils extracted. For this reason, within 2003-2005, the IX Servizio of Assessorato Regionale Agricoltura e Foreste, selected some olive groves where to carry out trials with kaolin and copper and to realize information and divulgation activities

    Solfatara and Pisciarelli areas are the most impressive example of hydrothermal activity at Campi Flegrei caldera (Southern Italy). In these areas INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano has been handling since 2004 a surveillance network for continuous, long-term volcanological monitoring of fumaroles fields by using thermal IR acquisition stations. In this paper different methodologies of analysis applied to time series of IR scenes are introduced and discussed. In spite of substantially different approaches to data analysis, the results of these methodologies agree with ground deformation data of the same area and likely are a useful tool for volcano monitoring and long-term risk definition

    Typical properties of optimal growth in the Von Neumann expanding model for large random economies

    We calculate the optimal solutions of the fully heterogeneous Von Neumann expansion problem with NN processes and PP goods in the limit NN\to\infty. This model provides an elementary description of the growth of a production economy in the long run. The system turns from a contracting to an expanding phase as NN increases beyond PP. The solution is characterized by a universal behavior, independent of the parameters of the disorder statistics. Associating technological innovation to an increase of NN, we find that while such an increase has a large positive impact on long term growth when NPN\ll P, its effect on technologically advanced economies (NPN\gg P) is very weak.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur

    A2163: Merger events in the hottest Abell galaxy cluster II. Subcluster accretion with galaxy-gas separation

    Located at z = 0.203, A2163 is a rich galaxy cluster with an intra-cluster medium (ICM) that exhibits extraordinary properties, including an exceptionally high X-ray luminosity, average temperature, and a powerful and extended radio halo. The irregular and complex morphology of its gas and galaxy structure suggests that this cluster has recently undergone major merger events that involve two or more cluster components. In this paper, we study the gas structure and dynamics by means of spectral-imaging analysis of X-ray data obtained from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. From the evidence of a cold front, we infer the westward motion of a cool core across the E-W elongated atmosphere of the main cluster A2163-A. Located close to a galaxy over-density, this gas 'bullet' appears to have been spatially separated from its galaxy (and presumably dark matter component) as a result of high-velocity accretion. From gas brightness and temperature profile analysis performed in two opposite regions of the main cluster, we show that the ICM has been adiabatically compressed behind the crossing 'bullet' possibly because of shock heating, leading to a strong departure of the ICM from hydrostatic equilibrium in this region. Assuming that the mass estimated from the Yx proxy best indicates the overall mass of the system and that the western cluster sector is in approximate hydrostatic equilibrium before subcluster accretion, we infer a merger scenario between two subunits of mass ratio 1:4, leading to a present total system mass of M500 1.9×1015M\propto 1.9 \times 1015 M_{\odot}. The exceptional properties of A2163 present various similarities with those of 1E0657-56, the so-called 'bullet-cluster'.     Magnetocaloric effect at the reorientation of the magnetization in ferromagnetic multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy

    We investigate the magnetocaloric effect obtained by the rotation of a magnetic field applied to an exchange-coupled multilayer system composed of two different ferromagnetic (FM) materials. We specifically consider a system in which the two FMs have perpendicular uniaxial anisotropy axes and utilise conditions which yield a reorientation of the total magnetization when compensation between the anisotropies of the two layers occurs. We calculate the consequent entropy change associated with the "artificial" reorientation. By using known parameters from MnBi and Co we predict an entropy change of Δs=0.34\Delta s = 0.34 Jkg1^{-1}K1^{-1} for perfect coupling. Lastly, we study the behavior of the multilayer under a rotating magnetic field via a micromagnetic model. When the layer thicknesses are of the order of the local domain wall width, the magnetic field-induced entropy change can be obtained with magnetic fields one order of magnitude lower than in the uncoupled case.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Performance of the diamond active target prototype for the PADME experiment at the DAΦ\PhiNE BTF

    The PADME experiment at the DAΦ\PhiNE Beam-Test Facility (BTF) is designed to search for the gauge boson of a new U(1)\rm U(1) interaction in the process e+^+eγ^-\rightarrow\gamma+A\rm A', using the intense positron beam hitting a light target. The A\rm A', usually referred as dark photon, is assumed to decay into invisible particles of a secluded sector and it can be observed by searching for an anomalous peak in the spectrum of the missing mass measured in events with a single photon in the final state. The measurement requires the determination of the 4-momentum of the recoil photon, performed by a homogeneous, highly segmented BGO crystals calorimeter. A significant improvement of the missing mass resolution is possible using an active target capable to determine the average position of the positron bunch with a resolution of less than 1 mm. This report presents the performance of a real size (2x2cm2)\rm (2x2 cm^2) PADME active target made of a thin (50 μ\mum) diamond sensor, with graphitic strips produced via laser irradiation on both sides. The measurements are based on data collected in a beam test at the BTF in November 2015.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure
