Nell Gwyn’s many after-lives : taming ‘the Protestant Whore’ in 21st century popular fiction

    Get PDF
Ever since her supposed self-fashioning as ‘the Protestant Whore’ in the 1660s, Nell Gwyn has become a figure of fascination, revamped and reinterpreted in a multitude of ways along the years: from the black and white films of the 1930s, the story of this Restoration orange seller turned Royal concubine continues to excite the imagination of not just film makers, but of novelists, artists and even jam makers nowadays, as much as it inflamed Restoration audiences. The aim of this paper is to analyse the discourse that lays at the basis of three modern-day reconstructions of Nell Gwyn’s figure in an attempt at drawing a connection between celebrity, pop culture and historical fiction so as to explain the reimagining of this actress as an innocent strumpet, a scheming shrew, a dignified lady and all things in between; this paper takes ideas on celebrity and historical fiction as the theoretical basis upon which to build the criticism of these revampings of Nell Gwyn to better understand the survival of her figure three centuries after her death.peer-reviewe

Diversification of Resources in Rural King City

    Get PDF
Lack of resources in rural King City has become a barrier for access to mental health treatment. Monterey County Behavioral Health (MCBH) provides mental health services but diverse programs like Interim Inc. are in the Salinas area. External mental health resources are difficult to obtain for some of the clients. Therefore, the ACCESS team for MCBH King City made the decision to implement a support group that would serve as a new resource for local adult clients. A Mindfulness Group was developed to help clients who suffer from anxiety and depression. The group contained content that educated clients on how to cope with anxiety using breathing techniques and present moment awareness. The effectiveness of the group was measured by having clients rate their moods at the beginning and end of each group session. Results have shown that the group has been effective. Clients reported different moods by the end of each session. It was also noted that clients reported a better mood when it was only the facilitator and client. The group has decreased anxiety symptoms for clients and has improved their everyday lives. To persist in positive changes among clients, it is recommended that the weekly mindfulness group continue to be implemented

Transfer Within Fyc Tracing The Operalization Of Writing-related Knowledge And Concepts In Composition

    Get PDF
This study traces the transfer of writing-related knowledge and concepts from the composition classroom into the writing assignments composed by students within the same course. Working in a first-year-composition classroom taught through a writing-about-writing curriculum, the researcher observed students as they navigated from the initial learning of concepts such as rhetorical situations, writing processes, and discourse communities, into an application of these concepts in various writing assignments, including rhetorical analyses and discourse community profiles. By analyzing a composition instructor\u27s objectives for her assignments and observing the interaction between students and their instructor in a single composition course for the duration of one semester, the researcher traced how students operationalized knowledge from the classroom and applied it in their own writing. After tracing this operalization through interviews with the instructor, observation of class activities and analysis of assignment sheets and student papers, the researcher proposes that instructors may encourage transfer within their composition classrooms by adequately presenting assignment objectives to students, and by allowing sufficient scaffolding of writing tasks. In this way, the researcher explains that students may be able to understand the objectives of their writing assignments in a way that may encourage them to apply the knowledge they learned in the classroom to the writing tasks assigned by their instructor

    Schur complements in Krein spaces

    Get PDF
The aim of this work is to generalize the notions of Schur complements and shorted operators to Krein spaces. Given a (bounded) J-selfadjoint operator A (with the unique factorization property) acting on a Krein space H and a suitable closed subspace S of H, the Schur complement A/[s]of A to S is defined. The basic properties of A/ are developed and different characterizations are given, most of them resembling those of the shorted of (bounded) positive operators on a Hilbert space.Fil: Maestripieri, Alejandra Laura. Childhood, migration and rights: contributions to an anthropological approach

    Get PDF
The aim of this essay is to present conceptualizations about migrant children's rights in Argentina. The analysis is aimed at exploring categories and central discussions on national and regional regulations, documents from various agencies, and academic research. The first sections of the paper provide a systematization of the regional and national contexts in which these discourses are institutionalized, including the challenges and demands that are built from rights approaches. Subsequently, it is proposed to consider other dimensions of analysis to conceptualize migrant children regarding policies towards families, different childhoods, and tensions implicit in the dynamics of particularization of rights holders. Thereby it achieves to introduce problematizations and levels of analysis from anthropology, on an issue traversed by the regulatory approach.Fil: Martinez, Laura Victoria. The aim of this report is to analyze the Socially Responsible Investment in the USA from the shareholder's point of view. Based on the rule 14a-8, dissatisfied investors or activists may submit proposal to be implemented in order to improve social, societal and environmental performances of a firm; they may change the firm strategy through their proposals. The internship mission consisted of updating a database from 1997 to 2007. This database results from the merging of two databases; one with data from 1997 to 2004, and one containing new data from 2005 to 2007. Observations are made from this constructed database containing nature of 3,428 filed resolutions, targeted companies, resolution's outcomes and filers. Empirical analysis reveals that while religious and individual investors are becoming less present, resolutions submitted by mutual funds, public pension funds and advocacy groups come at the front of the stage. In the same way, propositions concerning abortion and contraception and tobacco and military involvement are getting less important whereas energy and environment, animal rights and political involvement questions are increasing. Assuming that Socially Responsible Investment is a growing phenomenon, this report contributes to knowledge about the nature of the resolutions and their vote, and the involvement of filers.shareholder advocacy, social policy, shareholder activism, social policy resolutions, socially responsible investment, SRI, USA, corporate social responsibility, activisme actionnarial, responsabilité sociale des entreprises, actionnariat, investissement socialement responsable, Etats-Unis, résolutions actionnariales à caractère social

This article deepens in the theoretical and methodological accuracy of a dramatization strategy developed in the corresponding doctoral research. It recollects some precedents of convergence between anthropology and theater, and also considers the wider perspectives on the body dimension that argue with those precedents. In this context, the potential of historical approaches in the education of sensibilities within modern schooling dispositions is questioned. Finally, it states the need to connect the proposal with further discussions about the research involving infants.Fil: Martinez, Laura Victoria. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Aim: to investigate the potential role of 3D printing to produce zirconia restorations and to assess the mechanical properties of the 3D printed zirconia. Hypotheses: 1) The flexural strength of 3D printed yttria-stabilized zirconia is comparable or superior to milled yttria-stabilized, isostatic pressed zirconia, and 2) thermocycling and chewing simulation does not affect the flexural strength of 3D printed yttria-stabilized zirconia. Material and methods: 30 bars of printed yttria-stabilized zirconia and 10 bars of milled yttria-stabilized, isostatic pressed zirconia were utilized in this study. Printed zirconia bars were divided in 3 groups (10 bars per group): untreated, thermocycling and chewing simulation. Flexural strength test was performed on all the samples using a three-point bend test. One-way ANOVA analysis compared the 3 groups of printed zirconia samples, and Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the non-treated printed zirconia group to the milled zirconia group. Results: No statistically significant difference between the three groups of printed zirconia samples was found (P = 0.119). No statistically significant difference between the non-treated printed zirconia group and non-treated samples of milled yttria- stabilized, isostatic pressed zirconia was found (P = 0.178). Conclusion: No statistically significant differences in flexural strength were detected between yttria-stabilized printed zirconia and milled yttria-stabilized, isostatic pressed zirconia, and non-treated, thermocycling and chewing simulation tested printed zirconia samples. These results indicate the promising role of 3D printing in the fabrication of zirconia. Additional studies are needed to explore the full potential of this technology
