[EN] In this study was analyzed the effect of three different compatibilizers polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA), unmodified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), and HNTs treated by silanization with (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GLYMO) (silanized HNTs) in blends of bio-based high-density polyethylene (bioPE) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) with a weight ratio of (70/30). Each compatibilizer was added in a proportion of (3 phr regarding PBS). Standard samples were obtained by extrusion and subsequent injection molding. The analyzes of the samples were performed by mechanical tests, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and wettability (θw). Results suggest that the addition of modified HNTs (silanized HNTs) allowed to obtain better properties than samples compatibilized with unmodified HNTs and PE-g-MA, due to it contributes with the improvement in mechanical properties regarding bioPE/PBS blend, for instance, the tensile modulus and elongation at break increase about 8% and 13%, respectively. In addition, it was determined through FESEM images and that silanized HNTs particles were better dispersed over the matrix, which in fact contribute to the enhance in mechanical properties. TGA showed that silanized HNTs delay the degradation temperature regarding the uncompatibilized blend. While DMTA indicated the reduction in the mobility of the chains in samples with unmodified and modified HNTs. Therefore, it was successfully obtained compatibilized bioPE/PBS blends, which constitutes an interesting option to develop new sustainable polymers. In this paper the synthesis and characterization of magnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles growing under confinement conditions is reported. These conditions are achieved by infiltrating an aqueous solution with the precursor ions of interest in a nanoporous anodic alumina template. Morphology, chemical composition, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the synthesized material are studied. The results show the formation of agglomerated magnetic nanoparticles with ellipsoidal shape within and on the surface of the porous substrate. Due to the confinement effect, the phases synthesized into the pores are different of those obtained at room conditions. A quantitative comparison between magnetocrystalline and shape anisotropies allow to understand the invariance of the hysteresis curves to the direction as the magnetic field is applied. The superparamagnetic behavior of the agglomerates of nanoparticles is analyzed by curve M vs. T applied to different fields.Fil: Londoño Calderon, Cesar Leandro. Artículo cientifico en modalidad embargadoThe hypoglycemic pharmaceutical glibenclamide (GLB) is widely used around the world. This medication is released into the environment by municipal, hospital and industrial wastewater discharges. Although there are reports of its environmental occurrence in the scientific literature, toxicity studies on aquatic species of commercial interest such as the common carp Cyprinus carpio are scarce. The present study aimed to evaluate the oxidative stress induced on C. carpio by environmentally relevant concentrations of GLB. Biomarkers of oxidative damage such as hydroperoxide content, lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl content were evaluated as well as the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase. The concentration of GLB was determined in water as well as in gill, liver, muscle, brain and blood of carp at 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. The findings obtained in the study prove that GLB induces in- creases in biomarkers of oxidative damage and antioxidant enzyme activity in the teleost C. carpio, that his response is not concentration dependent and that the organs evaluated bioconcentrate this hypo- glycemic agent. These findings permit us to conclude that the presence of GLB in water bodies represents a risk for aquatic species

Role of bacterial community composition as a driver of the small-sized phytoplankton community structure in a productive coastal system

Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade de Vigo/CISUGWe present here the first detailed description of the seasonal patterns in bacterial community composition (BCC) in shelf waters off the Ría de Vigo (Spain), based on monthly samplings during 2 years. Moreover, we studied the relationship between bacterial and small-sized eukaryotic community composition to identify potential biotic interactions among components of these two communities. Bacterial operational taxonomic unit (OTU) richness and diversity systematically peaked in autumn–winter, likely related to low resource availability during this period. BCC showed seasonal and vertical patterns, with Rhodobacteraceae and Flavobacteriaceae families dominating in surface waters, and SAR11 clade dominating at the base of the photic zone (30 m depth). BCC variability was significantly explained by environmental variables (e.g., temperature of water, solar radiation, or dissolved organic matter). Interestingly, a strong and significant correlation was found between BCC and small-sized eukaryotic community composition (ECC), which suggests that biotic interactions may play a major role as structuring factors of the microbial plankton in this productive area. In addition, co-occurrence network analyses revealed strong and significant, mostly positive, associations between bacteria and small-sized phytoplankton. Positive associations likely result from mutualistic relationships (e.g., between Dinophyceae and Rhodobacteraceae), while some negative correlations suggest antagonistic interactions (e.g., between Pseudo-nitzchia sp. and SAR11). These results support the key role of biotic interactions as structuring factors of the small-sized eukaryotic community, mostly driven by positive associations between small-sized phytoplankton and bacteria.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. Relationship between genotoxicity and oxidative stress induced by mercury on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) tissues

Artículo científicoMercury is one of the most toxic metals in aquatic systems since it is able to induce neurobehavioral disorders as well as renal and gastrointestinal tract damage. The common carp Cyprinus carpio is an important species from both an ecological and economic viewpoint as it is consumed in many countries, the top producers being Mexico, China, India and Japan. The present study aimed to evaluate the relation between Hg-induced oxidative stress and genotoxicity in diverse tissues of C. carpio. Specimens were exposed to 0.01 mg Hg/L (the maximum per- missible limit for aquatic life protection), and lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl content and the activity of antioxidant enzymes were evaluated at 96 h. Micronuclei frequency and DNA damage by comet assay were determined at 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. Hg induced oxidative stress and genotoxicity on exposed fish, since inhibition of antioxidant enzymes activity and increases in lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and micronuclei frequency occurred. Blood, gill and liver were more susceptible to oxidative stress, while blood were more sensitive to genotoxicity. In conclusion, Hg at concentrations equal to the maximum permissible limit for aquatic life protection induced oxidative stress and genotoxicity on C. carpio, and these two effects prove to be corre- lated.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACyT, Project 181541) as well as the Secretaría de Investigación y Posgrado of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Mexico (SIP-IPN, Projects 20160871 and 20170931)

Reduction of the Oxidative Stress Status Using Steviol Glycosides in a Fish Model (Cyprinus carpio)

Artículo científicoSteviol glycosides are sweetening compounds from the Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni plant. This product is considered safe for human consumption and was approved as a food additive by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Its effects on the ecosystem have not been studied in depth; therefore, it is necessary to carry out ecotoxicological studies in organisms such as Cyprinus carpio. The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity by SGs on diverse tissues in C. carpio using oxidative stress (OS) biomarkers. To test the antioxidant activity, carps were exposed to four systems: (1) SGs free 444 control,(2)CCl 0.5mL/kg,(3)SGs1g/L,and(4)CCl 0.5mL/kg+SGs1g/Lat96h.Thefollowingbiomarkerswereanalyzed: lipoperoxidation (LPX), hydroperoxide content (HPC), and protein carbonyl content (PCC), as well as antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). It was found that both (3 and 4) systems’ exposure decreases LPX, CHP, PCC, SOD,andCATwithrespecttotheCCl system.TheresultsofthisstudydemonstratethattheconcentrationsofSGsusedarenot capable of generating oxidative stress and, on the contrary, would appear to induce an antioxidant effect

DNA damage and cytotoxicity induced on common carp by pollutants in water from an urban reservoir. Madín reservoir, a case study

    Get PDF
Artículo científicoMadín Reservoir provides a substantial amount of drinking water to two municipalities close to Mexico City metropolitan area. However, it receives untreated wastewater discharges from domestic sources in the towns of Nuevo Madín and others, as well as diverse pollutants which are hauled by the Río Tlal- nepantla from its upper reaches, so that the xenobiotics in the reservoir are highly diverse in terms of type and quantity. Previous studies showed that MR is contaminated with xenobiotics such as Al, Hg and Fe, as well as NSAIDs, at concentrations exceeding the limits established for aquatic life protection. These pollutants have been shown to induce oxidative stress on Cyprinus carpio and may therefore also damage the genetic material of exposed organisms, eliciting cytotoxicity as well. The present study aimed to determine the genotoxicity and cytotoxicity induced on blood, liver and gill of C. carpio by the pollutants present in MR water. Specimens were exposed to water from five sampling sites and the following biomarkers were evaluated: DNA damage by comet assay, frequency of micronuclei, apoptosis by TUNEL assay and caspase-3 activity. Significant increases relative to the control group (P < 0.05) were found with all biomarkers in all tissues evaluated, with the level of damage differing between sampling sites. In conclusion, pollutants present in MR water are genotoxic and cytotoxic to C. carpio, and this sentinel species, coupled with the biomarkers evaluated herein, is a reliable tool for assessing the health risk to wildlife posed by exposure to pollutants in freshwater bodies.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACyT-Mexico, Proj- ect 181541), and the Secretaría de Investigacio n y Posgrado, Insti- tuto Polite cnico Nacional (SIP-IPN, proyecto 20160871)

We studied the morphological characteristics of the process of widening of pores in films of nanoporous alumina (Al2O3). The experimental setup involves a set-up that uses low cost commercial aluminum. The process comprises a series of pre-treatments, a double anodizing process, and ends with the immersion of the porous nanostructure (originally manufactured) in an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid, for different time intervals (pore widening). The morphology of the obtained samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy, and its main properties (size, pore size distribution, roundness and porosity) were evaluated as a function of the widening time. The results suggest a dependency of the exposure time with the morphology of the nanostructures fabricated. These results open the possibility of fabricating nanopores with adjustable properties and in an inexpensive way.Fil: Pardo Saavedra, D. C.. Fil: Menchaca Nal, Sandra.
