Who is coming from Vanuatu to New Zealand under the new Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) program?

New Zealand’s new Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) program allows workers from the Pacific Islands to come to New Zealand for up to seven months to work in the horticulture and viticulture industries. One of the explicit objectives of the program is to encourage economic development in the Pacific. In this paper we report on the results of a baseline survey taken in Vanuatu, which allows us to examine who wants to participate in the program, and who is selected amongst those interested. We find the main participants are males in their late 20s to early 40s, most of whom are married and have children. Most workers are subsistence farmers in Vanuatu and have not completed more than 10 years of schooling. Such workers would be unlikely to be accepted under existing migration channels. Nevertheless, we find RSE workers from Vanuatu to come from wealthier households, and have better English literacy and health than individuals not applying for the program. Lack of knowledge about the policy and the costs of applying appear to be the main barriers preventing poorer individuals applying

We study thermalised configurations of SU(2) gauge fields by cooling. An analysis of the effect of cooling is presented and global and statistical information is extracted.Comment: 3 pages, uuencoded compressed postscript file, contribution to LAT 9

Three body resonances in two meson-one baryon systems

    Get PDF
We report four Σ\Sigma's and three Λ\Lambda's, in the 1500 - 1800 MeV region, as two meson - one baryon S-wave (1/2)+(1/2)^+ resonances. We solve Faddeev equations in the coupled channel approach. The invariant mass of one of the meson-baryon pairs and that of the three particles have been varied and peaks in the squared three body TT-matrix have been found very close to the existing SS = -1, JP=1/2+J^P= 1/2^+ low lying baryon resonances. The input two-body tt-matrices for meson-meson and meson-baryon interaction have been calculated by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation with the potentials obtained in the chiral unitary approach.Comment: corrected version, new channels evaluated, new references adde

A scalable system for microcalcification cluster automated detection in a distributed mammographic database

    Get PDF
A computer-aided detection (CADe) system for microcalcification cluster identification in mammograms has been developed in the framework of the EU-founded MammoGrid project. The CADe software is mainly based on wavelet transforms and artificial neural networks. It is able to identify microcalcifications in different datasets of mammograms (i.e. acquired with different machines and settings, digitized with different pitch and bit depth or direct digital ones). The CADe can be remotely run from GRID-connected acquisition and annotation stations, supporting clinicians from geographically distant locations in the interpretation of mammographic data. We report and discuss the system performances on different datasets of mammograms and the status of the GRID-enabled CADe analysis.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; Proceedings of the IEEE NNS and MIC Conference, October 23-29, 2005, Puerto Ric
