Partial resistance to leaf rust in a collection of ancient Spanish barleys
A collection of 569 Spanish barley accessions was screened for resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia hordei Otth) in the field at Cordoba during the 2000-2001 season. The level of resistance ranged from very low to very high. In 14% of the accessions the relative AUDPC (L94 = 100%) was lower than 10%. Selected accessions that were most resistant in the field, were tested in the seedling stage under controlled conditions. Macroscopic components of resistance indicated that six lines had a high level of partial resistance close to check cv. Vada and one line a similar level of partial resistance. Histological studies indicated that the resistance was based on a high percentage of early aborted colonies and reduction in colony size without plant cell necrosis. Three of the selected lines showed high percentage of plant cell necrosis associated with established colonies, which indicates a combination of prehaustorial resistance with late acting incomplete posthaustorial resistance. Although the new barley varieties already incorporate some partial resistance, new sources of partial resistance like these are needed to improve durability of the resistance
Characterization of Lr46, a gene conferring partial resistance to wheat leaf rust
Components of resistance conferred by the Lr46 gene, reported as causing "slow rusting" resistance to leaf rust in wheat, were studied and compared with the effects of Lr34 and genes for quantitative resistance in cv. Akabozu. Lr34 is a gene that confers non-hypersensitive type of resistance. The effect of Lr46 resembles that of Lr34 and other wheats reported with partial resistance. At macroscopic level, Lr46 produced a longer latency period than observed on the susceptible recurrent parent Lalbahadur, and a reduction of the infection frequency not associated with hypersensitivity. Microscopically, Lr46 increased the percentage of early aborted infection units not associated with host cell necrosis and decreased the colony size. The effect of Lr46 is comparable to that of Lr34 in adult plant stage, but in seedling stage its effect is weaker than that of Lr34
Search for partial resistance to leaf rust in a collection of ancient Spanish wheats
A collection of 917 accessions of Spanish durum and bread wheat was screened for resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) under field conditions at three locations. Resistance levels ranged from very low to very high, high susceptibility being most frequent. Relative disease severity (referred to the most susceptible accession = 100 %) was lower than 20 % in about 6 % of the accessions in each location. In the collection most of the lines (84 %)displayed a susceptible infection type. A final selection of seven accessions (one of them durum) displaying low severity level in the field and high infection type in a growth chamber was chosen for further studies. High levels of partial resistant with longer latency period and high percentage of early aborted colonies without necrosis were found. They might be used in breeding programmes

Se están clasificando en forma aproximada, en base a placas de prisma objetivo delgado, y se está obteniendo fotometría UBV fotográfica de unos 300 objetos con emisión H-alfa en la zona del Saco de Carbón. El origen del sistema de cúmulos globulares de la galaxia Messier 87
Se muestra que tanto la alta frecuencia específica de cúmulos globulares, como las diferencias de color entre objetos y el halo de la galaxia gigante Messier 87 son compatibles con la existencia de un procesos de captura a expensas de galaxias menos masivas en el cúmulo de Virgo. Experience with a double-compensating beam calorimeter
In an experiment to measure the D(t,..cap alpha..)n cross section at beam energies of 10 to 120 keV, we have developed a double-compensating beam calorimeter, based on a Swiss design to measure the partical beam intensity. A Faraday cup is not useful because of considerable charge exchange in the target gas at such low beam energies. We calibrated the calorimeter both with 10- and 3-MeV protons (comparing with a Faraday-cup measurement of the beam flux) and with the heat generated in a precision resistor. Both methods agree and give a calibration accurate to +- 0.08% over a range of 10 to 800 mW beam power. Beam powers as low as 5 mW may be used, but with less accuracy. The beam energy must be known in order to calculate the particle intensity. Some difficulties with and peculiarities of the device are discussed

Relating aviation service difficulty reports to accident data for safety trend prediction
A synthetic model of scheduled-commercial U.S. aviation fatalities was constructed from linear combinations of the time-spectra of critical systems reporting using 5.5 years of Service Difficulty Reports (SDR){sup 2} and Accident Incident Data System (AIDS) records{sup 3}. This model, used to predict near-future trends in aviation accidents, was tested by using the first 36 months of data to construct the synthetic model which was used to predict fatalities during the following eight months. These predictions were tested by comparison with the fatality data. A reliability block diagram (RBD) and third-order extrapolations also were used as predictive models and compared with actuality. The synthetic model was the best predictor because of its use of systems data. Other results of the study are a database of service difficulties for major aviation systems, and a rank ordering of systems according to their contribution to the synthesis. 4 refs., 8 figs., 3 tabs
Quasiparticle vanishing driven by geometrical frustration
We investigate the single hole dynamics in the triangular t-J model. We study
the structure of the hole spectral function, assuming the existence of a 120
magnetic Neel order. Within the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) there
is a strong momentum and t sign dependence of the spectra, related to the
underlying magnetic structure and the particle-hole asymmetry of the model. For
positive t, and in the strong coupling regime, we find that the low energy
quasiparticle excitations vanish outside the neighbourhood of the magnetic
Goldstone modes; while for negative t the quasiparticle excitations are always
well defined. In the latter, we also find resonances of magnetic origin whose
energies scale as (J/t)^2/3 and can be identified with string excitations. We
argue that this complex structure of the spectra is due to the subtle interplay
between magnon-assisted and free hopping mechanisms. Our predictions are
supported by an excellent agreement between the SCBA and the exact results on
finite size clusters. We conclude that the conventional quasiparticle picture
can be broken by the effect of geometrical magnetic frustration.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. Published versio
Manifestation of ageing in the low temperature conductance of disordered insulators
We are interested in the out of equilibrium phenomena observed in the
electrical conductance of disordered insulators at low temperature, which may
be signatures of the electron coulomb glass state. The present work is devoted
to the occurrence of ageing, a benchmark phenomenon for the glassy state. It is
the fact that the dynamical properties of a glass depend on its age, i.e. on
the time elapsed since it was quench-cooled. We first critically analyse
previous studies on disordered insulators and question their interpretation in
terms of ageing. We then present new measurements on insulating granular
aluminium thin films which demonstrate that the dynamics is indeed age
dependent. We also show that the results of different relaxation protocols are
related by a superposition principle. The implications of our findings for the
mechanism of the conductance slow relaxations are then discussed
