    Technique for detecting warm-hot intergalactic gas in quasar UV spectra

    The ionizing spectral energy distribution of quasars exhibits a steepening of the distribution shortward of ~ 1200 A. The change of the power-law index from approximately -1 (near-UV) to -2 (far-UV) has so far been interpreted as being intrinsic to quasars. We consider the possibility that the steepening may result from a tenuous absorption component that is anticorrelated with large mass overdensities. UV sensitive satellites, whose detectors can extend down to 1000 A, can set a useful limit to such an absorption component through the search of a flux increase in the window 1050-1190 A (observer frame) with respect to an extrapolation of the continuum above 1230 A. Since the recent FUSE or HST-STIS data do not show any obvious discontinuity in this region, this effectively rules out the possibility that intergalactic HI absorption is very important, and it is concluded that most if not all of the steepening is intrinsic to quasars. A smaller flux discontinuity of order 1% cannot, however, be ruled out yet and would still be consistent with the warm-hot intergalactic component if it amounts to 30% of the baryonic mass, as predicted by some models of large scale structure formation, provided its temperature lies around 10^{5.5} K.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures and 1 table, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal, typos corrected and correction for the faulty scaling of variable n_H^0 with redshif

    Mechanisms of the sperm guidance, an essential aid for meeting the oocyte

    In mammals, ejaculated spermatozoa must migrate into the female reproductive tract in order to reach and fertilize the oocyte (Figure 1). The number of spermatozoa that reach the oviductal isthmus (where they attach to oviductal cells and form the sperm reservoir) is small (1,2) and only ~10% of these spermatozoa in humans become capacitated (3) and acquire a state of readiness for fertilizing the oocyte. In addition, the sperm cells have a torturous and long way between the reservoir and the oocyte at the fertilization site (3–5 cm in humans) (2). These facts, together with the tiny dimensions of the gametes in comparison to the tube length make improbable the sperm arrival to the fertilization site and make evident the need for sperm guidance (4). Different guidance mechanisms appear essential for successful sperm arrival to the fertilization site: the short range mechanism such as chemotaxis (swimming up a chemoattractant gradient) (5) and the long range mechanisms such as rheotaxis (swimming against a fluid flow) and thermotaxis (the temperature-oriented cell motility).Fil: Lottero Leconte, Raquel.     Pathological and normal variability of foot bones in osteological collections from Catalonia (Spain) and Lazio (Italy)

    A wide number of factors can affect the structure of the bones in the foot. In bioarchaeology, few studies about foot anomalies include population comparisons and changes across time. We aimed to identify normal and pathological variability that affected the foot in the recent history of West Mediterranean populations. Thus, we analyzed change in occurrence of rare variants, pathological lesions, entheseal morphology, and their probable causes. We studied 518 pairs of skeletonized feet dated from the 2nd–20th centuries CE, from Catalonia (Spain) and the region of Lazio (Italy). Moreover, a Neolithic series from Oman has been analyzed for contrast. We found that calcaneal spur, hypertrophic peroneal trochlea of calcaneus, periosteal reaction of talar neck, alteration of articular surface to lateral cuneiform, displaced talar neck to medial plane, osteophytes in cuneiform-navicular joint, fused phalanges, and forefoot eburnation showed significant differences among countries. Contrasting by countries and dates, we noticed an increase in the frequencies of these variables from Spain over the centuries. Conversely, there are no temporal differences among the Italian series. The period encompassing the 10th–19th centuries CE demonstrated the highest differences between countries. Lifestyle, occupations, footwear, and geography could be the origin of variability

    Birth Size and Maternal, Social, and Environmental Factors in the Province of Jujuy, Argentina

    Introduction: birth size is affected by diverse maternal, environmental, social, and economic factors. Aim: analyze the relationships between birth size—shown by the indicators small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA)—and maternal, social, and environmental factors in the Argentine province of Jujuy, located in the Andean foothills. Methods: data was obtained from 49,185 mother-newborn pairs recorded in the Jujuy Perinatal Information System (SIP) between 2009 and 2014, including the following: newborn and maternal weight, length/height, and body mass index (BMI); gestational age and maternal age; mother’s educational level, nutritional status, marital status and birth interval; planned pregnancy; geographic-linguistic origin of surnames; altitudinal place of birth; and unsatisfied basic needs (UBN). The dataset was split into two groups, SGA and LGA, and compared with adequate for gestational age (AGA). Bivariate analysis (ANOVA) and general lineal modeling (GLM) with multinomial distribution were employed. Results: for SGA newborns, risk factors were altitude (1.43 [1.12–1.82]), preterm birth (5.33 [4.17–6.82]), older maternal age (1.59 [1.24–2.05]), and primiparous mothers (1.88 [1.06–3.34]). For LGA newborns, the risk factors were female sex (2.72 [5.51–2.95]), overweight (1.33 [1.22–2.46]) and obesity (1.85 [1.66–2.07]). Conclusions: the distribution of birth size and the factors related to its variability in Jujuy are found to be strongly conditioned by provincial terrain and the clinal variation due to its Andean location.Fil: Martinez, Jorge Ivan.     Analysis of the concentration of emissions from the Spanish fleet of tugboats

    At present, the sensitivity of society towards emissions in commercial maritime ports is increasing, which is reflected in the large number of studies on the control of emissions in them, perhaps because the most important commercial ports are located in cities with high population density. The objective of this work was to determine the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the activity of the Spanish tugboat fleet, studying the tugboat fleet of the eleven autonomous coastal Spanish communities from 2004 to 2017 and their impact on the carbon footprint of the country?s shipping sector. To do this, the methodology used by the International Maritime Organization for merchant ships to estimate the emissions of a tugboat fleet is formalized, and Gini concentration index methodology was applied to the concentration of emissions from this fleet. This has made it possible to obtain results on the distribution of the concentration of emissions from Spanish ports by region, age, and size, as well as to establish the profile of the tugboat port that pollutes the most and its carbon footprint. One of the results is that in the period analyzed, the concentration of emissions from the Spanish tugboat fleet increased if we looked at its distribution by region, and decreased if we look at its distribution by age and size. This is because tugboat activity was very different by region; however, their characteristics related to age and size evolved in a more homogeneous way

    La valoración de diversos aspectos de la biología reproductiva, permitió establecer precisiones sobre el acopio de semillas, necesarias para la conservación en Coccoloba cowellii Britton (Polygonaceae), endémico estricto de la flora de la provincia Camagüey, Cuba, categorizada En Peligro Crítico (CR). Se registra por primera vez la frecuente aparición de nuevos vástagos por la emisión de sierpes y una relación de 4:6 entre individuos funcionalmente pistilados y estaminados, estimándose en un 60 % la proporción de semillas inviables por formarse sin previa fecundación.
