    Temperature Dependence of Thermal Properties of Ex Vivo Porcine Heart and Lung in Hyperthermia and Ablative Temperature Ranges

    : This work proposes the characterization of the temperature dependence of the thermal properties of heart and lung tissues from room temperature up to > 90 Â°C. The thermal diffusivity (α), thermal conductivity (k), and volumetric heat capacity (Cv) of ex vivo porcine hearts and deflated lungs were measured with a dual-needle sensor technique. α and k associated with heart tissue remained almost constant until ~ 70 and ~ 80 Â°C, accordingly. Above ~ 80 Â°C, a more substantial variation in these thermal properties was registered: at 94 Â°C, α and k respectively experienced a 2.3- and 1.5- fold increase compared to their nominal values, showing average values of 0.346 mm2/s and 0.828 W/(m·K), accordingly. Conversely, Cv was almost constant until 55 Â°C and decreased afterward (e.g., Cv = 2.42 MJ/(m3·K) at 94 Â°C). Concerning the lung tissue, both its α and k were characterized by an exponential increase with temperature, showing a marked increment at supraphysiological and ablative temperatures (at 91 Â°C, α and k were equal to 2.120 mm2/s and 2.721 W/(m·K), respectively, i.e., 13.7- and 13.1-fold higher compared to their baseline values). Regression analysis was performed to attain the best-fit curves interpolating the measured data, thus providing models of the temperature dependence of the investigated properties. These models can be useful for increasing the accuracy of simulation-based preplanning frameworks of interventional thermal procedures, and the realization of tissue-mimicking materials

    Choline-based eutectic mixtures as catalysts for effective synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2

    CO2 is a renewable, abundant and cheap C1-feedstock and its conversion to cyclic carbonates starting from epoxides has been widely explored in the last years. Nevertheless, conducting this reaction under mild and sustainable conditions is still a challenging task. Herein we present the use of choline-salt based eutectic mixtures as catalysts for the reaction of CO2 with epoxides to give cyclic carbonates. Choline chloride and choline iodide have been coupled with various hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), mainly cheap and bio-based carboxylic acids and polyols, to form two classes of eutectic mixtures. Very good yields were achieved under mild conditions (80 \u25e6C in 7\u201322 h) for various terminal epoxides, with both classes of catalysts. While a pressure of 0.4 MPa of CO2 is required to obtain appreciable conversions using choline chloride-based mixture, atmospheric pressure of CO2 (balloon) has been successfully used with choline iodide-based mixtures. Furthermore, the catalysts could be recycled without appreciable loss of the catalytic activity. The improved catalytic performance of both cholinebased eutectic mixtures is attributed to the synergistic activity of the halide, responsible for the opening of the epoxy-ring, and the HBD that has a role in the stabilization of the alkoxide intermediate

    Gaslighting Exposure During Emerging Adulthood: Personality Traits and Vulnerability Paths

    Among the many forms of psychological violence, gaslighting is a particularly insidious manipulative behaviour that includes acts aimed at controlling and altering one’s own partner’s sensations, thoughts, actions, affective state, self-perception, and reality-testing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the experience of gaslighting and dysfunctional aspects of the partner’s personality. Gaslighter personality facets were assessed using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5–Informant Form–Adult (PID-5-IRF), while gaslighting behaviours were assessed using a 25-item questionnaire, based on the three categories of glamour, good-guy, and intimidator (Stern, 2007). The sample was made up of a group of 177 Italian emerging adults aged between 19 and 26 (49.2% male, 50.8% female; M = 21.88, SD = 1.75), enrolled at University, who participated voluntarily in the research. In fact, none of them received any form of direct or indirect incentive. In our study, we applied a beta regression model mapping the Likert scale into the open interval (0,1). The main results show (a) good-guy gaslighting is positively associated with manipulativeness and negatively associated with deceitfulness; (b) glamour gaslighting has a negative association with separation insecurity and manipulativeness, but it is positively associated with irresponsibility; (c) intimidator gaslighting has a positive association with separation insecurity and distractibility and a negative association with eccentricity and perceptual dysregulation; (d) all three gaslighting categories are negatively associated with anhedonia and impulsivity. Based on what emerged from the data, aspects such as separation insecurity, irresponsibility, and distractibility can be seen as serious risk factors for gaslighting. For this reason, with regard to clinical implications, an early recognition of dysfunctional traits in potential abusers should be fostered in order to protect both potential abusers and their partner from aggressive conduct within an intimate relationship

    Reducing the memory for iteration-exchanged information and border future metrics in the HomePlug AV turbo decoder implementation

    HomePlug AV is the most successful standard for in home power line communications. To combat non-ideality of the power line channel it includes a double binary turbo forward error correcting scheme. Unfortunately, it is known that the memory required by double binary turbo decoders for iteration-exchanged information is roughly three times the memory required for binary turbo codes. Moreover, high throughput implementations based on border state metric inheritance, require additional memories to store border state metrics from an iteration to the next one. This work faces these two aspects by analyzing compression techniques to reduce the amount of memory required to store both iteration-exchanged information and border future metrics. Experimental simulations show that non-uniform quantization and least significant bits dropping allow for a significant memory reduction (up to 30%) with a bit error rate performance loss of about 0.1 dB and a negligible logic gates overhead

    Gold nanoclusters embedded in antimicrobial keyboard covers: life cycle assessment and environmental sustainability

    Gold nanoparticles and nanoclusters can be used in a variety of sectors in different applications. Research on new synthesis methods and procedures for their integration into products is flourishing with positive results. This study focuses on the environmental impacts of synthesising cysteine-capped gold nanoclusters [Au25(Cys)18] and their integration in silicone keyboard covers. The final product presents an antibactericidal activity that could make it suitable for use in hospital wards to tackle the cross-transmission of pathogens. Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology is used here to analyse and compare the environmental impacts of antimicrobial keyboard covers against current procedures for cleaning keyboards in hospitals using gloves and alcohol wipes (70%). Furthermore, results have been compared with the normalisation factors based on two reference systems: global emissions and carrying-capacity values. Whilst the first reference system indicates the contribution of a production system relative to the global emissions; the latter provides an indication of the absolute environmental sustainability of the system evaluated. This study shows that adopting an antimicrobial keyboard cover results in lower environmental impacts than using gloves and alcohol wipes, almost for all the impact categories considered

    Long-term maintenance of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus in culture

    Abstract The common sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) is an important commercial species in the Mediterranean Sea for the consumption of its gonads (roe). This species has also long been used as an animal model in developmental biology and as an indicator in the assessment of environmental quality. In recent decades, the exploitation of this marine resource has become increasingly intensive, causing the depletion of wild stocks. The ripple effect observed in the laboratory use of this species has been the growing difficulty in finding valiant mature animals in the wild. We focused on the long-term maintenance of wild P. lividus and on the essential question of diet to maintain the animals and improve gonad development. The use of practical ration blocks which are nutrient-rich and show stability, easy storage and handling, resulted reduction in labor requirement and time for feeding streamlining the feeding practice. A significantly higher gonad production and a prolonged period of reproduction were obtained compared to wild caught individuals over the same period of time

    Dual effect of Thymosin α 1 on human monocyte-derived dendritic cellin vitrostimulated with viral and bacterial toll-like receptor agonists

    OBJECTIVES: Thymosin α 1 (Tα1) recently gained interest as immune adjuvant for vaccines because of its ability to modulate the T-cell/dendritic cell (DC) axis and to improve antibody production. The objective of this study was to determine whether Tα1 would address in vitro the response of human primary monocyte-derived DC, crucial regulators of vaccine-induced immunity, upon exposure to different toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists or infection with viruses or bacteria. METHODS: DC maturation and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines were analyzed. RESULTS: Our data revealed a dual effect of Tα1 on DC biology upon viral or bacterial stimulation. Interestingly, Tα1 enhanced human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-I and II surface expression and secretion of IL-6, TNF-α and IL-8 when DCs were treated with viral TLR3 and TLR7/8 agonists. Similarly, in pandemic H1N1 influenza A-infected DCs, Tα1 raised the expression of maturation markers and type I and III Interferon (IFN). In contrast, following bacterial TLR2 and 4 stimulation, as well as upon Bacillus Calmette-Guerin infection, the presence of Tα1 in DC cultures drastically lowered the analyzed cellular parameters. CONCLUSION: The knowledge that Tα1 pleiotropic effect might ameliorate anti-viral immune responses and, at the same time, dampen inflammation caused by bacterial infections could lay the groundwork for a more appropriate therapeutic application of this molecule

    Artificial intelligence and new business models in agriculture: a structured literature review and future research agenda

    Purpose Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a growing technology impacting several business fields. The agricultural sector is facing several challenges, which may be supported by the use of such a new advanced technology. The aim of the paper is to map the state-of-the-art of AI applications in agriculture, their advantages, barriers, implications and the ability to lead to new business models, depicting a future research agenda. Design/methodology/approach A structured literature review has been conducted, and 37 contributions have been analyzed and coded using a detailed research framework. Findings Findings underline the multiple uses and advantages of AI in agriculture and the potential impacts for farmers and entrepreneurs, even from a sustainability perspective. Several applications and algorithms are being developed and tested, but many barriers arise, starting from the lack of understanding by farmers and the need for global investments. A collaboration between scholars and practitioners is advocated to share best practices and lead to practical solutions and policies. The promising topic of new business models is still under-investigated and deserves more attention from scholars and practitioners. Originality/value The paper reports the state-of-the-art of AI in agriculture and its impact on the development of new business models. Several new research avenues have been identified

    Phosphorylation of nuclear Tau is modulated by distinct cellular pathways

    Post-translational protein modification controls the function of Tau as a scaffold protein linking a variety of molecular partners. This is most studied in the context of microtubules, where Tau regulates their stability as well as the distribution of cellular components to defined compartments. However, Tau is also located in the cell nucleus; and is found to protect DNA. Quantitative assessment of Tau modification in the nucleus when compared to the cytosol may elucidate how subcellular distribution and function of Tau is regulated. We undertook an unbiased approach by combing bimolecular fluorescent complementation and mass spectrometry in order to show that Tau phosphorylation at specific residues is increased in the nucleus of proliferating pluripotent neuronal C17.2 and neuroblastoma\ua0SY5Y cells. These findings were validated with the use of nuclear targeted Tau and subcellular fractionation, in particular for the phosphorylation at T181, T212 and S404. We also report that the DNA damaging drug Etoposide increases the translocation of Tau to the nucleus whilst reducing its phosphorylation. We propose that overt phosphorylation of Tau, a hallmark of neurodegenerative disorders defined as tauopathies, may negatively regulate the function of nuclear Tau in protecting against DNA damage
