Two kinds of procedural semantics for privative modification
In this paper we present two kinds of procedural semantics for privative modification. We do this for three reasons. The first reason is to launch a tough test case to gauge the degree of substantial agreement between a constructivist and a realist interpretation of procedural semantics; the second is to extend Martin-L ̈f’s Constructive Type Theory to privative modification, which is characteristic of natural language; the third reason is to sketch a positive characterization of privation
The top squark-mediated annihilation scenario and direct detection of dark matter in compressed supersymmetry
Top squark-mediated annihilation of bino-like neutralinos to top-antitop
pairs can play the dominant role in obtaining a thermal relic dark matter
abundance in agreement with observations. In a previous paper, it was argued
that this can occur naturally in models of compressed supersymmetry, which
feature a running gluino mass parameter that is substantially smaller than the
wino mass parameter at the scale of apparent gauge coupling unification. Here I
study in some more detail the parameter space in which this is viable, and
compare to other scenarios for obtaining the observed dark matter density. I
then study the possibility of detecting the dark matter directly in future
experiments. The prospects are consistently very promising for a wide variety
of model parameters within this scenario.Comment: 17 pages. v2: additions to figures 4 and
Behavior of X-Ray Dust Scattering and Implications for X-Ray Afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts
The afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have commonly been assumed to be
due to shocks sweeping up the circum-stellar medium. However, most GRBs have
been found in dense star-forming regions where a significant fraction of the
prompt X-ray emission can be scattered by dust grains. Here we revisit the
behavior of dust scattering of X-rays in GRBs. We find that the features of
some X-ray afterglows from minutes to days after the gamma-ray triggers are
consistent with the scattering of prompt X-ray emission from GRBs off host dust
grains. This implies that some of the observed X-ray afterglows (especially
those without sharp rising and decaying flares) could be understood with a
dust-scattering--driven emission model.Comment: ApJ, in pres
Targeted deep surveys of high Galactic latitude HI with the GBT
Over 800 sq. deg. of high Galactic latitude sky have been mapped at 21 cm
with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). An improved knowledge of
the telescope's beam characteristics has allowed us to reliably map not only
regions of high column density, but also such regions as ELAIS N1, a targeted
Spitzer field, which have very low HI column density. The additional fields we
have observed cover a cross-section of dynamically and chemically interesting
regions as indicated by the presence of intermediate/high velocity gas and/or
anomalous far-IR (dust) colour.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. To appear in "The Dynamic ISM: A celebration of
