    Acoustic test of a model rotor and tail rotor: Results for the isolated rotors and combined configuration

    Acoustic data from a model scale main rotor and tail rotor experiment in the NASA Langley 14 by 22 Foot Subsonic Tunnel are presented for the main rotor and trail rotor in isolation and for the two rotors operating together. Results for the isolated main rotor show the importance of the rotor flapping conditions on mid-frequency noise content. High levels of main rotor retreating side blade-vortex interaction noise are shown to radiate downstream of the model. The isolated tail rotor noise results show the dominance of harmonic noise in the thrusting direction. The occurrence of tail rotor broadband noise is seen by the broadening of the tail rotor harmonics and is attributed to fuselage wake turbulence. The combined main and tail rotor data are presented to show the dominance of each rotor's different noise sources at different directivity locations

    First look analysis of geologic ground patterns on ERTS-1 imagery of Missouri

    Examination of ERTS-1 data for selected areas of Missouri revealed not only many of the known geologic features but also a number of unknown linear, circular and arcuate ground patterns. The number of new geologic elements that have been brought to light as well as the sharp definition and probable extensions of several known geologic features point out the importance of multispectral imagery via satellite and the synoptic views which they provide. To date, analysis and interpretations have been a first-look visual examination of the unenhanced projected images

    Three Mars data analysis projects from the Viking Mars program were identified initially, and three more came into being as the work proceeded. All together, these six pertained to: (1) the veritical distribution of scattering particles in the Martian atmosphere at various locations in various seasons, (2) the physical parameters that define photometric properties of the Martian surface and atmosphere, (3) patterns of dust-cloud and global dust-storm development, (4) a direct comparison of near-simultaneous Viking and ground-based observations, (5) the annual formation and dissipation of polar frost caps, and (6) evidence concerning possible present-day volcanism or venting.     We prove the existence of topological quantum error correcting codes with encoding rates k/nk/n asymptotically approaching the maximum possible value. Explicit constructions of these topological codes are presented using surfaces of arbitrary genus. We find a class of regular toric codes that are optimal.     Critical Phenomena Inside Global Monopoles

    The gravitational collapse of a triplet scalar field is examined assuming a hedgehog ansatz for the scalar field. Whereas the seminal work by Choptuik with a single, strictly spherically symmetric scalar field found a discretely self-similar (DSS) solution at criticality with echoing period Δ=3.44\Delta=3.44, here a new DSS solution is found with period Δ=0.46\Delta=0.46. This new critical solution is also observed in the presence of a symmetry breaking potential as well as within a global monopole. The triplet scalar field model contains Choptuik's original model in a certain region of parameter space, and hence his original DSS solution is also a solution. However, the choice of a hedgehog ansatz appears to exclude the original DSS.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
