A Survey of Safety Recommendations for All-Terrain Vehicle Dealers and Track Owners in Kansas
Introduction. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are associated with injury,mortality, and healthcare costs. ATV related injuries are less severewhen consistent safety practices are followed, however, ATV safetyregulations are varied among states. This study sought to surveyKansas ATV dealers and track owners to determine safety promotionpractices.
Methods. A cross-sectional telephone survey was conducted ofKansas ATV dealers and tracks. Survey questions included promotionand sale of safety equipment, provision of ATV safety information,and respondent characteristics.
Results. Of those contacted, 32% of dealers and 31% of tracksresponded to the survey. Most ATV dealers sell safety gear (70% -100%) and all recommend safety gear to buyers and riders. All ATVtracks reported requiring helmets (100%) but were varied regardingother forms of safety gear. The majority of ATV dealers (77%) recommendedsafety courses, but only 31% of dealers and 40% of tracksoffered courses. Eighty percent of ATV tracks and 52% of dealers feltthey had a professional responsibility to educate riders/owners onsafety.
Conclusions. Safety promotion by ATV dealers in Kansas consistentlywas recommended, but often limited to the sales of safety gear(helmets and gloves) or the provision of manufacturer provided safetymaterials. Further, ATV dealers reported rarely offering skills tests orsafety courses to buyers. In Kansas, safety promotion at the point ofsale or track level could be improved to increase public awareness ofATV safety practices. KS J Med 2017;10(4):76-78
Tec kinase Itk in gammadeltaT cells is pivotal for controlling IgE production in vivo
In conventional alphabeta T cells, the Tec family tyrosine kinase Itk is required for signaling downstream of the T cell receptor (TCR). Itk also regulates alphabeta T cell development, lineage commitment, and effector function. A well established feature of Itk(-/-) mice is their inability to generate T helper type 2 (Th2) responses that produce IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13; yet these mice have spontaneously elevated levels of serum IgE and increased numbers of germinal center B cells. Here we show that the source of this phenotype is gammadelta T cells, as normal IgE levels are observed in Itk(-/-)Tcrd(-/-) mice. When stimulated through the gammadelta TCR, Itk(-/-) gammadelta T cells produce high levels of Th2 cytokines, but diminished IFNgamma. In addition, activated Itk(-/-) gammadelta T cells up-regulate costimulatory molecules important for B cell help, suggesting that they may directly promote B cell activation and Ig class switching. Furthermore, we find that gammadelta T cells numbers are increased in Itk(-/-) mice, most notably the Vgamma1.1(+)Vdelta6.3(+) subset that represents the dominant population of gammadelta NKT cells. Itk(-/-) gammadelta NKT cells also have increased expression of PLZF, a transcription factor required for alphabeta NKT cells, indicating a common molecular program between alphabeta and gammadelta NKT cell lineages. Together, these data indicate that Itk signaling regulates gammadelta T cell lineage development and effector function and is required to control IgE production in vivo
A time of flight method to measure the speed of sound using a stereo sound card
We present an inexpensive apparatus for measuring the speed of sound, with a
time of flight method, using a computer with a stereo sound board. Students
measure the speed of sound by timing the delay between the arrivals of a pulse
to two microphones placed at different distances from the source. It can serve
as a very effective demonstration, providing a quick measurement of the speed
of sound in air; we have used it with great success in Open Days in our
Department. It can also be used for a full fledged laboratory determination of

A Search for Very Low-mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in the Young sigma Orionis Cluster
We present a CCD-based photometric survey covering 870 sq. arcmin in a young
stellar cluster around the young multiple star sigma Orionis. Our survey
limiting R, I, and Z magnitudes are 23.2, 21.8, and 21.0, respectively. From
our colour-magnitude diagrams, we have selected 49 faint objects, which
smoothly extrapolate the photometric sequence defined by more massive known
members. Adopting the currently accepted age interval of 2-10 Myr for the Orion
1b association and considering recent evolutionary models, our objects may span
a mass range from 0.1 down to 0.02 Msun, well within the substellar regime.
Follow-up low-resolution optical spectroscopy (635-920 nm) for eight of our
candidates (I=16-19.5) shows that they have spectral types M6-M8.5 which are
consistent with the expectations for true members. Compared with their Pleiades
counterparts of similar types, Halpha emission is generally stronger, while NaI
and KI absorption lines appear weaker, as expected for lower surface gravities
and younger ages. Additionally, TiO bands and in particular VO bands appear
clearly enhanced in our candidate with the latest spectral type, SOri 45 (M8.5,
I=19.5), compared to objects of similar types in older clusters and the field.
We have estimated the mass of this candidate at only 0.020-0.040 Msun, hence it
is one of the least massive brown dwarfs yet discovered. We also discuss in
this paper the potential role of deuterium as a tracer of both substellar

Bromination Pattern of Hydroxylated Metabolites of BDE-47 Affects Their Potency to Release Calcium from Intracellular Stores in PC12 Cells
BACKGROUND: Brominated flame retardants, including the widely used polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been detected in humans, raising concern about possible neurotoxicity. Recent research demonstrated that the hydroxylated metabolite 6-OH-BDE-47 increases neurotransmitter release by releasing calcium ions (Ca2+) from intracellular stores at much lower concentrations than its environmentally relevant parent congener BDE-47. Recently, several other hydroxylated BDE-47 metabolites, besides 6-OH-BDE-47, have been detected in human serum and cord blood. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: To investigate the neurotoxic potential of other environmentally relevant PBDEs and their metabolites, we examined and compared the acute effects of BDE-47, BDE-49, BDE-99, BDE-100, BDE-153, and several metabolites of BDE-47-6-OH-BDE-47 (and its methoxylated analog 6-MeO-BDE-47), 6 -OH-BDE-49, 5-OH-BDE-47, 3-OH-BDE-47, and 4 -OH-BDE-49--on intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), measured using the Ca2+-responsive dye Fura-2 in neuroendocrine pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. RESULTS: In contrast to the parent PBDEs and 6-MeO-BDE-47, all hydroxylated metabolites induced Ca2+ release from intracellular stores, although with different lowest observed effect concentrations (LOECs). The major intracellular Ca2+ sources were either endoplasmic reticulum (ER; 5-OH-BDE-47 and 6 -OH-BDE-49) or both ER and mitochondria (6-OH-BDE-47, 3-OH-BDE-47, and 4 -OH-BDE-49). When investigating fluctuations in [Ca2+]i, which is a more subtle end point, we observed lower LOECs for 6-OH-BDE-47 and 4 -OH-BDE-49, as well as for BDE-47. CONCLUSIONS: The present findings demonstrate that hydroxylated metabolites of BDE-47 cause disturbance of the [Ca2+]i. Importantly, shielding of the OH group on both sides with bromine atoms and/or the ether bond to the other phenyl ring lowers the potency of hydroxylated PBDE metabolites
